Records bought on holiday.

Do you have different criteria for records and other things you buy on holiday? Are they more lax? more stringent? or just different? or none of the above?

I find that some of the records I treasure most were bought on holiday. Because I forever associate them with the places and people I was around when I picked them up.

Also shopping in a new place doesn't have the rote quality that shopping in your hometown can acquire.

What are some of your stories of records (and other things) bought on holiday?

ehehehe, I went to London specifically to buy records (Emma going to a gig was just my cover!).

When we went to Philly, Nick had to go in every single record store because they have different stock you know. He knows what the local stores have by heart. It was all very exciting.

"It was all very exciting"

Sarah I think you have revealed yourself to be the wet dream of half of ILM.

Or perhaps you were being sarcastic.

I really don't go on vacation. When I do, if I'm not just buying whatever I actually need (in other words, if I'm visiting my mother and have realized there is no food in the fridge), I buy whatever cool things there are that I can't get at home. When I visit my mother, I buy Moxie and pastrami to bring home. When I used to go to Texas, I'd buy barbecue sauce and chorizo, and at the time there were better record and game stores there, so I'd hit those. Oh, and used bookstores, which New Orleans doesn't really have except to serve the college kids.

Ohh, but wait. Yes. This will sound like all I ever buy is food, but it must just be an on-vacation type thing, since otherwise I mostly buy books. Any time I'm on the road, somewhere new, whatever, I buy whatever odd little sodas and so forth are around. Cheerwine? Had it. Mexicola? Had it. HEB-brand apple soda? Of course. Lime cola in a glass jug? Yep. "Mocha latte coffee cream soda" in Denver? Twice. Hubba Bubba bubble-gum-flavored soda in Kansas City? Once, and that was more than enough.

Just don't buy any wine on holiday (unless you happen to be holidaying in the Barossa or otherwise recognised wine-producing region), or spirits for that matter. It will turn out to be swill.

Astoundingly incorrect, Matt. The bottles I got from Australia and New Zealand have all been uniformly excellent.

I bought a Gumball album when I went to Belgium.

I bought an Urban Dance Squad alb the first time I went to Amsterdam. Yeah, of course I was mashed.
