Is it Manga or Studio Ghibli or are SG films still Manga? (Is this the one with the ghostly half-world?)

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 16 August 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I was really disappointed in it. The story seemed so half-assed and unresolved and disjointed. But what disappointed me most was the music. It sounded like music that could have been in the background of an American romantic comedy. No sense of otherworldliness.

manga = Jap comic book
anime = Jap animation
Manga Video = American anime distributor
Studio Ghilbi = celebrated anime production company that made Spirited Away among other things
Disney = released Sprited Away in the US.
Spiritec away = great movie, like Princess Mononoke better though.

spirited away is out in uk in a 'month' according to today's guardian. we ought to arrange an ile trip to see it.

ghibli music can be poor, yes, nausicaa music was god awful in places.

I am bemused by the criticism of the music, I thought it was grand. Oh, and even though the search function is a bit off, it never hurts to use it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 August 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If you enjoyed Spirited Away, try to find some of Miyazaki's other films.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Nausicaa in the Valley of Wind
Porco Rosso

and find the SUBTITLED versions -- dubbed anime is THE SUCK.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The comic version of Nausicaa is pretty magnificent.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It's screening at some Pier somewhere in Jersey on Wednesday night!! hope it dont rain.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a mini-documentary on the DVD about the lengths they went to to dub it. Having seen it both dubbed and subbed, I don't really have a preference. Which is an improvement over every other anime ever.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha, Porco Rosso I think I have seen on late night TV. I liked it too. And once again, bad Colin for not using dodgy search engine! Will check out Princess Monolake, thanks for the tip.

Ah, but since this thread is in the world now and everything: No-Face, greatest allegory of new economy ever committed to celluloid or what?

nestmanso (nestmanso), Sunday, 17 August 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, when i was at CMJ last year in NYC, some guy actually had on a full-body No(h)-Face costume, which i encountered whilst walking down St. Marks' Place.

weird, huh?

i also ran into a goatee'd Lenny Kaye...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 17 August 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a No-Face at the Comic Con last month.

I love this movie, best one I've seen in last ~3 years.

Also, US dub = Dakota Fanning as Chihiro = Hell.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 17 August 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

haha German dub = Nina Hagen as the witch = way better than the original.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 17 August 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's BRILLIANT!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That is really excellent. It would be interesting to hear.

Larcole (Nicole), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)
