Big Dada is Dead

"In any country there must be people who have to die. They are the sacrifices any nation has to make to achieve law and order."

I guess that’s how Idi Amin justified the estimated between 300,000 and 500,000 people he killed over an 8-year period while leaving his country in ruins. Well Big Dada died last night in Saudi Arabia, the only country that proved willing to give him asylum. Meanwhile the debate continues in Uganda as to whether to allow his body to be returned for burial.

I’ve been meaning to read "Talk of the Devil: Encounters With Seven Dictators" the new book of interviews with former dictators (Mengistu from Ethiopia, Baby Doc from Haiti, Idi Amin, Mira Markovic/Yugoslavia and others) to see how their various brutalities were explained, justified or denied by them. One of them has just eluded justice.

Good riddance. Has there been any orderly cue set up for people who want to piss on his corpse? I'm in.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

does Amin still have supporters in Uganda? does he have family there?

I've seen the doc Idi Amin Dada where the filmmaker follows Amin around.... a man who wanted his personality projected onto and through everyone and everything he came into contact with. horrifying.
