High & Dry on a Saturday night.

Fuckaduck!

So, here's today's sob story. My wife's away in Maine --- on an island without electricity, somewhat ironically (on purpose no less....and no, not just to get away from me) -- with some college friends of hers. I had to work Thursday and Friday nights so I stayed behind, and was originally going to spend this evening (Saturday night) here in the city with my friend Rob who lives up in New London. Rob also has a tiny, jail-cell-like apartment on Ave B (same building as Manitoba's) and we were going to go out and hit the bars with zeal and suitable aplomb. So, I worked all last night (vampire shift, 8pm to 8am) and get up and start my day around 2pm. I give Rob a call on his cell to see what's up, and he duly informs me -- in a somewhat irritatingly lazy way, that he's had second thoughts and really isn't up to the drive into the city from New London and blah blah blah blah. Bottom line, he ain't comin'. Now, believe it or not, I'm not someone who likes to browbeat people into succumbing to social plans, so I just gave him a "no biggee, man", despite the fact that I'm now somewhat furious that he waited until the last possible minute to tell me (let alone the fact that I had to call him to find out). I sympathize with not wanting to do the drive, but....y'know....couldn't you have told me sooner? So, now I'm left planless, and practically every other living soul on Earth that I know is away. F U C K !

Your suggestions, please. And please make them more interesting than: Go buy a bottle of Crazy Horse and some porn!

You could go see Deerhoof tonight at the Knitting Factory.

You could go see Deerhoof tonight at the Knitting Factory.

I must confess to not being familiar with their work.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought a poussin and made JERK POUSSIN. The best part of course is whacking the oven-cooked bird into pieces with a meat cleaver for a bit of grilling before serving. Ex-cellent...

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't either when I saw them last fall in Portland, but they were pretty much rockin' and I was won over. That said, I don't know yet whether I'm going tonight or not yet.

hstencil, Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean poulet?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I was left with rather explicit instructions not to burn the apartment building down, so that rules out any cooking endeavors whatsoever (besides, I had to chuck out most of the stuff in my fridge yesterday).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd hang w/ alex but he'd light me on fire.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

No, poussin: teeny weeny chickens but bigger than a rock cornish game hen. Poulet is just 'chicken' in French.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I was left with rather explicit instructions not to burn the apartment building down

ha ha yer wife knows all about this "honour the fire" business!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the teeny little birds that leslie caron had to learn to eat in gigi?

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

quail?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

quails = big meaty birds.

the birds gigi ate = teeny weeny swallow-like birds.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

wrens?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

quails aren't THAT meaty

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha yer wife knows all about this "honour the fire" business!

All too well, Tad, all too well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno some quail are pretty small.
then there are cornish game hens....dunno
but a poussin is a *fish*

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

do you have a Jaz Coleman shrine or something in yer pad?

oh, and poisson = french for "fish."

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm rather bemused that my plea for sympathy on a planless Saturday evening has morphed into a discussion about game hens and the proper culinary preparation thereof.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i'm wrong, poisson = fruit.

(to think that i got a certificate of proficiency in french!)

I gave you a suggestion, Alex. Of course, you could always just go drink at Bellvue.

hstencil, Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sure that somewhere in nyc serves gamebirds for eating, alex.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

o no! arrgghh! oopps!
the *French* police are coming for me! *hides*

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Q. What is a Cornish hen? I have heard that it is a regular chicken that has been treated to remain small? I have never seen any Cornish hens on the hoof (so to speak). Can you tell me what they are?

A. The breeding and cross-breeding of chickens has a long and quite possibly glorious history, extending over continents and centuries. The Rock Cornish hen or Rock Cornish game hen is a cross between the Cornish and White Rock breeds of chicken, and are naturally small. By the time they are slaughtered at 4 to 6 weeks, they weigh around 2.5 pounds, and provide about one serving of meat each. Jonathan Bartlett, author of The Cook’s Dictionary and Culinary Reference says "it needs marinating or spicing to have much taste and is generally roasted." High praise, indeed.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that les oiseaux petits that i was thinking of are called "ortillons."

Not yet, you mean. Bahaha.

I gave you a suggestion, Alex. Of course, you could always just go drink at Bellvue.

Duly appreciated, Stence! Dunno if I'm up for either on a solo tip, but keep'em comin'.

You were right the first time, btw. Poisson DOES mean Fish, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, poisson is fish ... the phrase for "seafood" or "shellfish" is "fruits of the sea" in a lot of Romance languages, if that's what Tad's thinking of ...

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Poisson roxx!

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

um, you could also open up a Time Out or a Village Voice and look for more things to do. Myself, I think I'm just gonna stay in or something.

hstencil, Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad was right the first time.

Orbit, you mean les gendarmes du 'Freedom', surely?

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, i was. logically enough, "fruit" = french for "fruit."

LES POISSONS ROX VOUS ETES TOUTS GAY!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Les gendarmes du L'Academie Francaise! (sorry can't make special chars)

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

why can't french be more like german? german for fish = "Fisch." you just add a "c" and yer sprechen Sie Deutsch.

and "Gift" = "poison" auf Deutsch.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

GIFT ROXEN DU BIST ALLE SCHWULE!

So plans to imbibe

Oh yeah, and AIM chat

That is worth noting.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, just came back from Mondo Kim's on Fourth street (though not before Rob called back to express second thoughts on his second thought, i.e. "I dunno, man, maybe I will come in after all," only to then reverse himself, and basically disapointment me for a second time.....dick!) Picked up the DVD of Jarmusch's "Mystery Train" (I have it on vhs, but not on DVD) and the box set of "Foyle's War" (BBC mini-series about detective during WWII). About to figure out what I'm doin' for dinner and buy myself a sixpack of beer. Ho hum.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, Mondo Kim's is on St.Mark's Place. No idea what orifice I pulled "Fourth Street" out of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You should listen to "High & Dry" by Def Leppard. It's all about your predicament!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Imromptu FAP? I know my astro boy and are going drinking.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate people like Rob. I'm angry at Rob for you, Alex. I say you get drunk and then catch a cab to wherever the hell he is and kick his inconsiderate ass. Buy me a ticket to England and I'll help.

jewelly (jewelly), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, NEW London. Well, a ticket to wherever the hell that Rob fuckface is. He'll be sorry.

jewelly (jewelly), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Im so bored, i just baked a damn cake and cleaned the bathroom. All while listening to Bone Thugs. I might have a problem.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I ordered out some Lebanese food and watched "DOA" (the Punk Movie, not the awful Dennis Quaid vehicle). Ran out of beer. Walked around for a bit. Popped into Generation Records on Thompson Street for absolutely no fuckin' reason (and bought nothing). Bought a six of Yuengling. Am now back at home. No one's called. Can't seem to summon enthusiasm to watch another DVD. What to do what to do what to do.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ask a thread on ILM about which original Kiss member you would have liked to have been and why. Spend some time thinking about your answer before posting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

alex i swear to god you won't regret going to see deerhoof. you've been very forthcoming about the kind of stuff you like, and deerhoof doesn't really fit, but live, right now, if you like the rock, they are as good as anything going. i will personally refund your ticket if you're not happy about having gone. (no refunds for being offended by the knitting factory or audience members.)

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I will second that Deerhoof are a fine band. Whenever the drummer breaks out like John Bonham it's a grand thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, dunno if I can be arsed to hike down to the Shitting Factory, just so I can stand around by myself. Think I'll open yet another Yuengling and pop in yet another DVD. Cheers, though......

Over & Out fer now......

PS: the only acceptable answers regarding the Kiss member question is, of course, Gene or Ace.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but why? (Not demanding an exact answer now, I think I'll start that thread myself! And I'll start it here!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

http://members.tripod.com/~kissfactman/EricSingerpix/singer.jpg

I'd be Eric Singer (above)...only because he joined late. Assuming he cashed in on a lot of the 're-reunion' skrillah. That and he looks like one of the 80's Corey's...which one? Haynes? Whatever.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, image not linkable. As the thread here notes as well, you have to pick one of the four original members only. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevermind then. Im going to go drink.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Always an acceptable option.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

deerhoof, esp w/ their new two guitar deal, have come up w/ a whole new language of ROCK that hasn't been spoken before, kind of like what the magic band, minutemen, sy, and very very few others did.

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(others have expanded the language or spoken it in radically new ways but new languages are rare.)

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I doubt that claim.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

do you buy that claim for the magic band?

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, sure!

But honestly, the "language" of rock music has been exhausted for a while. I mean, that field has been tilled barren.

See I'm pretty much of the mind that rock music ended for all intents and purposes around 1996 or so. I think the Dead C and other post-Sonic Youth guitar groups represented the teleological end point. You've just got different rehashing of the basic gtr/bs/dms structure since then.

I've never heard deerhoof, though. Tell me a track to download.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(also '96 sort of neatly coincides with widespread acceptance of the internet, the powerful home PC, the laptop/digital generation, etc. Not that that matters; the Dead C and their ilk would have existed regardless. But it's a neat parallel. That's my GRAND THEORY anyway)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that dead c and various post-sy bands took a certain thing as far as it can be taken, and that the reason there hasn't been a new thing is that there's always a shortage of brave geniuses, maybe schooled in non-rock music, who belive in themselves, rehearse a whole bunch, and absolutely do not care about being more or less ignored for years. the genius part is crucial, as are very pure motives and a day job.

the best way to understand how this relates to deerhoof is to hear some of the new stuff they're doing live. you can download "apple bomb", "dummy discards a heart", "panda panda panda", and "l'amour stories" but seeing them live is what will make you see.

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Deerhoof were very good last night. I don't know if what they do is so "new" in terms of the parts used to throw it together, but they definitely have their own style/language/whatever, which is pretty refreshing to my ears. That is, I can hear some of the reference points, but it doesn't matter because they put 'em together in such a way that it's an interesting synthesis. Plus, mostly they rock in such an off-kilter way that it's hard to not be affected. If anything, they remind me of how personality-less some of the "math rock" bands I listened to (and still listen to) can be, because Deerhoof brings a lot more than just an abstraction to nod your head to.

Uh, not sure if that makes sense, but whatever.

hstencil, Sunday, 17 August 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I just downloaded a Deerhoof track ("Sealed with a Kiss") and I must say.....with all due respect to his Stencilness, this stuff doesn't really do anything for me. Actually, that's not entirely true. It does conjure feelings within me. Those feelings would include annoyance and bewilderment (albeit not in a positve sense). Like listening to a chorus of badly synchronized car alarms being conducted by a one-armed robot with a retarded midget sidekick hiting keys on a casio keyboard.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

One-armed robot with a retarded midget sidekick...ha! Excellet.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Sunday, 17 August 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

deerhoof is definitely operating in a realm outside of the bands in your personal pantheon, alex. (i'd list those bands but it's a cheap shot and we all know who they are anyway.) i still maintain that you would have been floored by seeing them live.

dan (dan), Sunday, 17 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

huh, well, I just gave a suggestion for Saturday night, not necessarily y'know like a life-changing musical event or anything. That said, I don't think I've heard any Deerhoof that fits that description, but I haven't heard everything by them. They are good live though, kinda like a weird cross between the Who and the Residents with one of the Shonen Knife girls fronting, but whatever, too late now.

hstencil, Sunday, 17 August 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, download "This Magnificent Bird Will Rise."

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence, don't take it all personal-like. I was just stating my reaction about one song of theirs. I didn't say: "THEY'RE THE WORST BAND EVER,....AND ANYONE WHO EVEN TOLERATES THEM SHOULD BE DRAGGED OUT OF THEIR HOMES IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT BY RUTHELESS SQUADS OF TASTE POLICE AND BEATEN WITHIN AN INCH OF THEIR DIRECTIONLESS, FATUOUS LIVES!"

I save that sort've ire for Good Charlotte. Seriously, though, thanks for the tip. I should really listen to more of their stuff before I give'em a thumbs down. I've been dead-wrong about bands before, notably 16 Horsepower and Calexico, both of whom I used to vociferously denounce at every possible occaission, until I heard more of their respective work, and my ears were opened and my mind was changed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I've downloaded all the songs mentioned in this thread .. and these guys are great!! I dunno why I never bothered to check 'em out before. Probably because of the lame name (I always used to get them confused with Gobblehoof, that crappy J. Mascis side-project), or the ever odious Kill Rock Stars affiliation. But these folks actually rock! The drummer is great, he has a real elastic sensibility and really makes these songs sparkle. I love the way his drums are recorded. Actually, I love the way all the tracks I downloaded sound (which I think are all from 'Apple O', and which I gather is their newest?), the recording is very sympathetic to the chiming twin guitar lines. The singer seems like the kind of thing which would normally annoy me, but in the context of this band it works well, it offsets the music nicely.

All that said, I don't hear any "new languages" going on here. It's just well constructed, rhythmically lithe rock music, and actually possesses a finely warped classic-rock sense of dynamics. I'm definitely going to investigate further.

Alex, that song you downloaded is very atypical (ha! look at me I'm an expert all of the sudden). The other stuff I heard doesn't sound like that track at all (which I agree is fairly dispensible), and rocks pretty hard. You might still have a problem with their singer, tho, I dunno.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Reveille you should get/listen to.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

They kind of strike me as a Beatles to U.S. Maple's Stones.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

PS I'm going to see them in a couple of days, I am excited

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Like listening to a chorus of badly synchronized car alarms being conducted by a one-armed robot with a retarded midget sidekick hiting keys on a casio keyboard.

HAHAHAHAHA! Had to revisit that one...
