as mentioned in my earlier film thread, i'm having a weekend of house admin and r&r, mainly involving watching a lot of movies. 24hrs in and i've watched 6 videos/dvds in between buying a fab new tartan quilt cover, posting letters, writing, cooking etc. out of these 3 have featured the lovely ms jjl in them (the hudsucker proxy, mrs parker and the vicious circle and short cuts). i've always thought she was an amazing actress and had a terrible crush on her (it's just got quite a bit worse, incidentally). agree/disagree?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

talented actress, i agree. she's also pretentious as all hell.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

She's pretentious too? Wow.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i can live with that (having, astonishingly in my opinion, been accused of same)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I was saying, pretention is good. (Do I really think this anymore?)

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i knew that. it has to be good because i am (probably, if i am being told the truth) one of its foremost practitioners. however, being honest i could see her, like a lot of actresses, being v hard work...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

She is intensely pretty. Much like Jennifer Love Hewitt in that respect. I don't think I have seen a film with either in. Maybe I should rent one; and avoid Freddy Prinze Jr. at the same time.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved her as dorothy parker - if she's like that in real life (which i hope), then crush totally reinforced... however, this is abt acting mainly, i just think she's v versatile and really commands any scene she's in, but also capable of great subtlety, too... thus great in my book

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked her hair in eXistenZ.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

She is great in a lot of bad films, bad in a lot of bad films, bad in a lot of films that might have been better off without her, and v. v. occasionally she is great in a great film. Her filmography is one of the most interesting and idiosyncratic of all 'modern' actors - her willingness to take risks is admirable; her judgement maybe less so,

The whole story of her dad's demise is also kind of sick and fascinating

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You need to check out the Anniversary Party. Phoebe Cates, JJL, Alan Cummings(sp?) Kevin Kline, some guy who looks like Peter Sellers.... and, unfortunately, Gwyneth Paltrow (though given the role, maybe Paltrow is spot-on).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

second The Anniversary Party

Certainly all-time biggest crush for me.

Didn't Versus write a song about her too?

she's perfect

roger a, Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a fan. That fast-talking almost Rosalind Russell/Katherine Hepburn thing she does in Hudsucker is particularly irresistible.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

she sucked in that Stephen King one with Kathy Bates. sucked (saw it last weekend on TV)

Aaron A., Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High, people! Have we no memory at all?

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I've got a memory. Many many times I've wished my name was Mike Damone.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

of course I would have handled things differently than he did, obv.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Damone is a bastard.

I have to admit I visit the Phoebe Cates memory bank more than the JJL.

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought u were a swell guy

naked as sin (naked as sin), Saturday, 16 August 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the anniversary party is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. grating, ridiculous, seemingly written by a committee of drama students trying to cram in every HARD HITTING dramatic turn they could. JJL was a low low point in it to boot, tough to do in a movie with one g. paltrow in it.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Sunday, 17 August 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

72.4% dud.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 17 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

huge classic for last exit and for the crazy roommate movie featuring fellow genius bridget fonda. i would like her even more if she insisted that all interviews be conducted in french.

Classic. Beautiful and talented and clever.

Pete S, Monday, 1 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved him in My So Called Life. Actually, no, I hated him, the way he kept abusing Clare Denis, fucking disgusting.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

uh....

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, JJL playing a guy + Claire Danes playing a French film director, abusing each other, is making my mind explode with hottness

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Go forth and masturbate.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

so classic! who likes the anniversary party like I do?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

not me!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

but it's so enjoyable

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry?

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

She's one of my favorite actresses. Search: Short Cuts and Last Exit to Brooklyn.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

fast times at ridgemont high

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i love anniversary party, but some of her parts are trying-- i'm thinking the big fight on the cliff "but JOE, JOE, JOE, JOE" fakey crying etc.

king is alive was not so good. generally though i have a positive feeling towards her

i think i liked georgia pretty ok

ron (ron), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm definitely a fan, and I really should see more of her stuff. Mrs. Parker & The Vicious Circle is a movie that I really enjoyed but I'm kind of conflicted about. It basically portrayed her life as nothing but a big manhunt. I definitely was entertained by the gossip and goings on but I could see why that would annoy people.

She's naked a hell of a lot in Single White Female in case you care.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ron is otm about anniversary party, it definitely gets way too actorish by the end but is otherwise aces

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if it weren't for anniversary party i would not have experienced the joy which is mary-lynn rajskub (and karen too! which reminds me to watch the girls guitar club movie right now!) oh but it is on my other hd so i cant rats

I saw (and liked a lot) The Spectacular Now, in which she has a supporting part. I went to start a thread on that film but then my long post about it got gobbled up, somehow, and I didn't have the energy to redo it.

She's really good. The Spectacular Now is really good. Both are neglected/underrated.

Did she suffer from "women on a certain age" mistreatment in Movies or did she decide to go down a different path? I'm aware that she's done a lot of theatre work in recent years. Prior to TSN I last saw her in the horrible Margot at the Wedding, which I walked out on but she was probably good in it.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 16 May 2015 22:35 (ten years ago)

She should be fun in the new Tarantino.

I hope she gets lots of screen time.

The Spectacular Now one of the better written and acted 2013 films.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 16 May 2015 23:53 (ten years ago)

Miami Blues just became "available" and she's revelatory in it.

wiki:

Leigh was originally cast as Vincent Gallo's girlfriend in his self-directed film The Brown Bunny, and was apparently prepared to perform oral sex on Gallo as the script required.

I saw Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle for the first time in 24 years last night, and Alan Rudolph said an executive after Cannes offered him $1 million for postproduction redubbing of JJL's lines "so you can understand her." Apparently it's very faithful to audiotapes of Dorothy Parker's voice, but I really didn't have much of a problem getting the dialogue. She's great in it.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 5 May 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

The problem with her studied fidelity to audiotapes in the first of those two clips is that she comes across a bit too much like a mimic doing Dorothy Parker, and not quite like a person being herself.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 5 May 2018 17:03 (seven years ago)

In the context of the film, where she talks like that throughout, she seems real to me.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 5 May 2018 17:05 (seven years ago)

that parker movie is hilarious. the ultimate in peter brady as george washington dress-up.

i put the hitcher on for rufus a couple of weeks ago. that movie is timeless.

I fell in love with Georgia tonight.

the very juice and sperm of kindness. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 9 April 2023 01:18 (two years ago)

I haven’t seen it since it came out but I remember liking it (and JJL in particular, obv.).

The relationship with her sister took some turns I wasn't expecting, seems like (I too haven't seen it since first came out). Sister played by always intriguing Mare Winningham, who is or was in the play Girl From The North Country.

dow, Sunday, 9 April 2023 03:45 (two years ago)

I watched a JJL movie tonight, too: In the Cut (she's Meg Ryan's sister). Made me realize I hadn't seen her in a while.

jaymc, Sunday, 9 April 2023 04:12 (two years ago)

I rewatched Fast Times a few years ago and was really struck by how good she is in that, even better than I remembered.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 9 April 2023 04:34 (two years ago)

I watched Altman's Kansas City a couple months back and JJL is terrific in it

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 9 April 2023 08:58 (two years ago)

Georgia's absurdly well-developed. Not too many films show a three-dimensional relationship b/w a woman and her brother-in-law (played by Ted Levine, Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs). Even the expected scenes have twists: when Winningham joins JJL on stage, it's not a triumphant moment, more a case of nerves.

Have yall seen The Anniversary Party? Has its dramedy aspects, but mostly toward the end, and otherwise it's a hoot. Co-created by JJL and Alan Cummimg, somewhat (reportedly) based on based on their actual relationship at the time (2001), but you can tell they know their Altman and Mike Leigh---wiki describes it well, basically, though doesn't quite emphasize the age factor as I recall it: Neither is all that old, but feeling it, esp. being on the cusp, biz-wise: she's making a romcom with Kevin Kline, and both are likely to get some pushback for subliminally wrinkled sex appeal etc; meanwhile, she has, I think, pulled some strings to facilitate the production of hubbie/kept man's most recent novel---he's currently blocked and/or procrastinating about writing(also bisexual and just plain moody; she's afraid he'll finally get terminally bored of anxious olde her)---so now he's a director--annd he hasn't cast her because age---they're having big anniversary party, and their friends are on various rungs of biz ladder, none of them quite spring chickens, though pretty close in non-Hollywood terms---Kline does some excellent whining about why Cumming hasn't cast him, and gets the man-to-man runaround: ecstasy can't get in teh way of biz talk!

Because of conflicting schedules, there was a period of only 19 days in which the entire cast—consisting of friends and actors with whom Leigh and Cumming previously had worked—would be available for filming. This prompted the decision to film using digital video, which Leigh felt also added a sense of immediacy and intimacy that would draw the audience into the action as party guests observing everything from the sidelines.

The order in which the toasts were made was determined before the scene was filmed, although with the exception of that offered by Skye, they were improvised rather than scripted.[citation needed]

Retired actress Phoebe Cates* returned to acting for this one film, as a favor to director Leigh, her best friend.[citation needed]

Actress Mina Badie is Leigh's half-sister, from her mother's second marriage.

Yeah, you'll have to see what happens with her (neighbor lady w dog complaints) introduction to lives of thee artists.
*Also Mrs. Kevin Kline.

dow, Monday, 10 April 2023 17:10 (two years ago)

The one thing I remember from that movie is that there's a CD playing in the background of a scene (the Stones? the Kinks?) After the track ends the next one on the album immediately starts playing.
I have never heard that before or since in a movie.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 10 April 2023 18:08 (two years ago)

I watched a JJL movie tonight, too: In the Cut (she's Meg Ryan's sister). Made me realize I hadn't seen her in a while.

― jaymc, Saturday, April 8, 2023 11:12 PM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

this one slipped under my radar on release and, even within the canon of JJL movies, it is batshit insane

mh, Monday, 10 April 2023 19:47 (two years ago)

Back in the 80s, she was as good as anyone, and better than most. Like so many of her peers (Debra Winger comes immediately to mind), she dropped off the radar as she hit middle age.

Wasn't she in "Annihilation"? I've avoided that film because I love the book so much.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 10 April 2023 20:12 (two years ago)

Annihilation the movie is good - you just need to be ready for it to be essentially a different story

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 10 April 2023 20:15 (two years ago)

Yeah, I've seen comparisons to "Roadside Picnic"/"Stalker."
