As noted here, in an interesting bit of modern power politics I admit I was not well aware of. Now I'm rather more interested, though, given some of the details here. Any insight? (Jokes about the stomping ground of Trife and Blount not to be accepted.)

(seriously, i imagine it has something to do with the perceived strategic importance of Georgia -- maybe as a launching ground for future attacks on terrorists from the Middle East and certain former Soviet republics. probably something to do with oil for all i know.)

A Rose Revolution and various other things later, Russian troops are to be withdrawn fully by 2008 while the current government is quite open about looking to join NATO, the EU, etc. The new pipeline that runs from Azerbaijan to Turkey and the Mediterrenean goes through Georgia, and said pipeline is to be expanded further east from the Caspian soon enough. The Great Game is well back in swing.
