so... as some of you may know, we were supposed to be having Cotton Mather playing at our 'Radio4' clubnight on Wednesday... 'cos of their, understandable, worry about flying at the moment, all their dates are cancelled... so we found a replacement.. here's what i stuck in our mailout. please pass it onto anyone you know in London who may be interested, as it's so last minute this is the best way to spread the word.

(oh... it's this Wednesday, and they'll be on around 10-ish.. an approx 40 min set.)

thanks!!

> The SOFT BOYS - yes folks... when informed of our dilemma, Sir Robyn > Hitchcock offered up his legendary band of merry minstrals to fill the void > left by Cotton Mather. Currently holed up in some bunker or other recording > their new album, they thought it only sensible that they swap one bunker for > another for an evening, and come entertain the kids at Radio4. It may not > end up being the full line-up on Wednesday, as Matthew and his wife are > currently VERY expectant of child (congratulations from all here), but > whatever happens, it's bound to be fantastic... oh yes indeed...

Soft Boy, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Say what you will, this is brilliant news.

Soft Boy, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well fuck me with a stick, Lord Hitchcock and gang in the tiny NHAC, I'm there. I know his Mum, y'know...

chris, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And for added incentive, I, the man known as Doompatrol will be there, upfront, enjoying the psychedelic minstrels. First person to spot me and punch me in the face will be awarded with a drink!!!

PS. I'm not Alan McGee.

PPS. I'm going to be the big guy in the Johnny Cash giving the finger southern trash shirt.

xxx

doomie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But I could change my mind about the shirt!! To make it harder!!

doomie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You may have to work hard for that drink. I.E. Punching everyone in radius of The BLOODY BETTER THAN THE BEATLES SOFT BOYS!!!!!

doomie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Doom, if you see an overweight short fella with thick dark hair and a strange messy beard, come say hello. I'll probably be alone since I can't imagine any of my chums will want a piece of the Hitchcock.

Actually if you've got sway at R4, why don't you suggest they put me on as support, doing a solo?

chris, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's your band called?

doomie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm Chris T-T.

chris, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll pass it on, man. See you at the show!

doomie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do people get a drink for punching McGee as well?

Mr Noodles, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doom don't tell me you are IAN?!? I am SO gonna die laughing if it's IAn. This message is SOOO *deja lu*

nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is doomie morrisey?

Geoff, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Moz has liked some awful old toss in his time - Bradford, James, The Woodentops, Echobelly - but surely not the woeful English whimsy of Hitchcock and his tedious chums?

Andrew L, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

morrissey has WAY worse taste than the brave cannibal doomintroll (who i cannot meet and hug on wed as it wd prove conclusively to the massive that we are not the same person, as nearly all now secretly believe)

mark s, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or maybe the name is so much fun that it's been franchised out!

Maybe you will see one of many doompatrols that inhabit this earth!

*evil laughter*

MOIHAHAHAHAHHAHAHH

*cough cough*

I have a cold. Leave me alone. Grrr...

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Soft Boys/Robyn H were good in a kind of 'I also like REM' kind of way. In 1985. In North America (my best friend was into same and I could still probably sing ALL of Uncorrected Personality Traits). Unfortunately the Can Of Bees jokes stop being funny after, ooh, the second time you hear them.

suzy, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I enjoy Soft Boys more than Robyn Hitchcock's stuff and the first album is sheer class. After years of cultdom, any recognition is very cool for the people in involved.

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Minneapolis was a hive of Soft Boys punkapsychedelica where RH would regularly play to a thousand more people than supposedly pop groups did. So in my opinion the cult was rehabbed 15 years ago - and besides which, Egyptians were Soft Boys minus Kimberley Rew!

Suffice it to say I really, really have grown out of them. Too much of Freudian Psychedelic Mama's Boy, my least fave male archetype these days. It would be tres weird to go to this particular gig.

suzy, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is your most favourite male archetype? ;)

Tom, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

D'oh...Bowie casualty! Of course even in that archetype there are plenty of wrong'uns but if I come across a good'un, JACKPOT!

suzy, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where's this gig? I wouldn't mind meeting old Doomie (if I can borrow the digicam from work I could get you all a photo!), and of course seeing the magnificent Soft Boys.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Check out www.poptones.co.uk for details, it's at the Nottinghill Arts Club. Very small venue to see the band. It's going to rock, mind you, rock very hard.

As for the digital camera, yes, I'm going to be there, but will you know who I am? No!!!! Must preserve the sanctity of the mystery of trolling.

But you should come to the show. I think it's going to be just a fiver to see the soft boys!!!!!!!

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

radio4 every wednesday @ notting hill arts club. 21 notting hill gate. w11. 6pm 'til 1am

click here for the poptones djs top10s list

odd times we live in.

the tosser public-schoolboy from blur forms a cartoon band and the music press act like it's the second coming.. just the other day i saw an ad in the nme for a webcast (i forget who it was for.. not important.. some shite) that described it as 'a revolution in live music' (???). one of the 'hottest tickets' at this years SxSW convention (where there is somewhere in the region of 1000 live bands playing) was for a playback of the new radiohead album!!!

you'd be forgiven for thinking nobody goes out anymore. but they do .. or at least, they come to radio4 anyways.

radio4 is poptones clubnight. it happens every wednesday in notting hill, west london. every week, we have a band or two playing their little hearts out. it might be a poptones band... it might not... either way, they're there. ('what sort of bands?' you ask... 'whatever sort' we reply... beechwood sparks, the hives, january, sloan, cosmic rough riders, bob hund, fonda500, captain soul, myracle brah, the tyde, the posies, montgolfier brothers... just a selection of the fantastic international / drunk talent that has graced, or is due to grace, our 'stage')

we also have the poptones djs. poptones djs play whatever the hell they like. you see... poptones djs don't have to please anybody but themselves. if other folks get into it, then that's good. if they don't.. well, there's other places they can be. we don't force anyone to be there.

you know what we hate (apart from radiohead)? when people think what we play is in some way 'ironic'. it may not be a fashionable idea, but as djs we play the music we love. weird huh? so if we feel like playing mc5 followed by bon jovi followed by mirwais followed by sonic youth, that's what we'll do. we don't play ac/dc because we're riding the coat-tails of some post-ironic metal trend. we play ac/dc because that's what we play at home.. and have done for god only knows how long. if we're playing madonna... that's 'cos we think she's ace. same goes for judas priest, king tubby, 13th floor elevators and destinys child.

basically, the radio4 'schtick' is this... it's all about the music. if you can get on the end of that, then come and join in the fun. if you want to be seen somewhere 'cool'... then not only should you not bother coming to radio4, but you should stop looking at this website altogether... we don't want you.

radio4 happens every wednesday at notting hill arts club, notting hill gate, london, w11.

we are also doing selected radio4 nights in new york, toronto, los angeles, chicago, detroit, malmo, oslo, stockholm, barcelona and a whole load of other cities... for more details of these, keep an eye on our radio4:international bit of our site and keep an eye on your local press.

to receive weekly email updates of what's going on at the london radio4, click here and mail us.

god bless brother wayne kramer, mani and roky erickson.

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, and as an added bonus you can see every coke-addled PR dolly from West London and Prim Hill trying to dance in kitten heels after way too many Cosmopolitans. I always think, hey girls, I'll sell you new septums for £20.

You'll have a great time, Doomie. Have fun!

suzy, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have a supply of new septums at £20 a pop? Are they recycled plectrums or something?

Blimey Radio 4 is now in direct competition with SUSSED!! A shame as coke-addled PR dolly-bird is my current Favourite Female Archetype.

Tom, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"if you want to be seen somewhere 'cool'... then not only should you not bother coming to radio4, but you should stop looking at this website altogether... we don't want you." Ooooh! Radio4 wins the DG award for the biggest number of posers per square foot.

DG, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wouldn't do this if there weren't already ads on this thread. A band called The Walkmen are playing the radio4 night a week later (october 3). As they no few people in London, all support would be much appreciated.

hans, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As explained to the wife (and now you lot) I'm there for the MUSIC! Not anything else.

So..

Nyah nyah nyahn...

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no = know

hans, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyho...

I'm a muscled bound beat up boxer type with crewcut....hardly a skinny coke addled buy with requiste haircut. Fuck, just love music, I really do. I could be at the blow up, surrounded by fake plastic mods and really groove to big boss man. Scene addled people are the least of my worries, I just worry whether or not the band is going to fake the funk!

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

REmember the code, people, am I telling the truth about my description!!!

Nah....I hear about it all the time, posing and what not....who really cares? I mean, I go and check out the band. I like the band. I hate the band. I go home. I put on their cd, maybe. I smoke some cigarettes and have a cup of coffee. I go to bed.

That's my pose.

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DP I care not whether you snort coke all the livelong day you are not a dolly-bird.

Seriously the music policy of Radio 4 sounds righteous and good but isn't this what every such club claims - we will play anything as long as its good man - but it's still pretty predictable when you're actually in there (NB I would include the club I DJ at in this).

Tom, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't wait to go to England. "Poseur" is the best word ever and you hardly ever hear it in the US.

hans, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, man, I have snorted coke and various other substances like a fiend before....but I did it for me, cause I *wanted* to do it. Jesus' Son was bible before the move, small town hack made good.

I have been to loads of clubs in London. I have heard my wife complain that she doesnt want to go out and pose.

I just go out and enjoy the music, man. It takes a confident fellow todo that. But it's true. I really fucking love music.

All of the hang ups that go with it, I do not love.

Radio four is fun, electic club. Track and field is fun and electic. Blow up was fun and electic. And I attended all of them in my worse ernest hemingway beard ever (which was shaven off when someone said I looked homeless).

It's the music that is my fuck off saviour, not jesus christ.

(PS. I'm not trying to sound righteous...)

PPS. George Bush was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, I am convinced that the world is now officially insane).

doomie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Soft Boys? A fiver? Just down the road?

I am *so* fucking there, dude!

ogden, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"..but will you know who I am? No!!"

Actually, yes Mr. Doom. I know more than you think.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so who here is actually going?

toby, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going!

Thomson is opening now...for the soft boys, a good power pop band, always good to support new music.

doomie, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely you should have gotten Bell Biv Devoe instead...that way they could sing: "you can doomie in the morning/you can doomie in the night/you can doomie when you wanna doomie baby"

Nicole, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How did you know that was my scene that was cut from Mariah Carey's Glitter!!

That diva Bitch!

doomie, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So how was it? Does Robyn still have that sad faux-Kenzo jacket with the BITS in it?

suzy, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was genius from start to finish. They opened with my favourite Soft Boys song, "Queen of Eyes", finished with "Underwater Moonlight"... it was a really beautiful gig. They all looked as if they were having great fun, too. Now if only I hadn't had so many of those daft cocktails, my memories of the evening would be perfect...

Andrew Williams, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They weren't daft cocktails, they were great cocktails, and they had me plastered right up til lunchtime today :)

Definitely the coolest gig I've been to - we both had shit-eating grins on our faces all the way through, and when they played I Wanna Destroy You I swear I almost creamed my pants. As for the Byrds cover...woohoo!
