The two-piece swimsuit we call the bikini made its debut on Paris runways in 1946. The word "bikini" comes from "Bikini atoll," the name of one of the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific, where atomic-bomb tests were performed in 1946. One theory of the coinage is that the effect achieved by a scantily clad woman appearing in public may be compared to the effect of an A-bomb blast. Another possible explanation is that the bikini leaves its wearer nearly bare, the way the bomb tests stripped Bikini atoll. In 1985, the tankini began appearing on beaches in the U.S., and the word "bikini" was combined with "tank" to create its appropriate name.

That just reminded me of the "Daily Show" bit from last week where Jon Stewart remarked on the UK/Europe heatwave and said that the last time it was this bad, Maggie Thatcher had to go about in a tankini.

Thanks a lot.

Actually the bikini was invented in the 17th century on the Isle of Man (hence its name "mancini"). The swimsuit was divided vertically and covered the whole body from the shoulders down, as you can see in this picture. Unfortunately it was made of heavy silk and thus caused quite a number of young girls to drown in the Irish Sea.

And there's a third theory yet: It was a copy of an earlier design called the Atom.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 18 August 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

but then "nice" for goodness sake, was I offended by the image? no. should I have been? was that the intention? have I inadvertently stumbled into a weird minefield to which only Sommermute alone holds the key? Will I invent THE JETPACK? what's with the bodies that keep piling up under my house? only time and New Answers will tell. And maybe not even then

I really thought that picture was going to be a lot worse than it was. I feel like doing that all the time. Except I'd have to touch the larvae then, I suppose, so nix that.

Here's one from the "things everyone knows about Ancient Rome" department:

They were exercise garments, IIRC.
