Where is the evidence that the Iraqi resistance is being conducted by Saddam or by those who want to return him to power? This phrase is used over and over on TV news, without justification.

Quote from C4 about 5 mins ago: "attacks carried out by those loyal to Saddam who wish to make the country ungovernable". Yeah, ungovernable by the Americans perhaps. How less well informed would I be if I stopped watching TV and reading newspapers?

what i heard is that the "saddam loyalists" are actually al qaeda who, since the invasion, have been operating in iraq. i'd asume they hope to drive the u.s out like they did russia from afghanistan.

Linking Saddam to the insurgency is a tactic of the Bush Admin taken up by the press as a means of delegitimatizing the insurgency and making people forget that we are now an occupying power in a foreign country. (Reminds me a bit of how Soviet Russia (or Red China) was behind every move of the VNC at the outset of the Vietnam War....)

(This is not to say that there aren't bands of Saddam loyalists. And I suspect that some people previously indifferent to Saddam might now find him a convenient rallying point for kicking the Americans out of their country. )

Interesting article about one of the resistance groups now operating in Iraq. They are anti-Saddam, anti-Baathist.
