Leicester v Middlesbrough
Portsmouth v Bolton
Charlton v Everton

Wed Aug 27 2003

Arsenal v Aston Villa
Liverpool v Tottenham
Man Utd v Wolves

closing date and time for entries is midday this Saturday

this will be a tough one as the first set of games's results are likely to affect your judgement for the second set - but you will not be able to change your mind once all predictions have been made. to compensate for this, exactly correct predictions will count double for all games AFTER the Monday.

quick reminder of the scoring system:

exact prediction = 10
correct winning team and their score but incorrect losing team score = 5
correct winning team but incorrect scores = 3
draw but incorrect score = 3
no-score draw = 5 (+ 10 for exact prediction)

away yer go

dom't forget for the remaining games you will earn double points for all exactly correct predictions

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 24 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't claim extra points, I know, but my prediction above that Anelka would score the winner on 87 minutes was pretty extraordinary.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My prediction that the lads would balls up the first league game at the new ground didn't take much prophetic vision, though.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No correct predictions whatsoever for me this weekend, but I was four minutes away from one last night. Those double points will make a hell of a difference to anyone getting it right this week.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was the sam James, in fact I was so knackered last night that when I first looked at my predictions I thought I'd got last night's right, but then it was " oh yeah......bugger."

chris (chris), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"it's the half-time report, and the scores are...
64 - pj miller"

This is the happiest day of my life :-)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

carsmile steve was the only one to benefit significantly from last night's excellent game, a full 20 points for he - but kudos to Daniel and his spooky prediction regharding Anelka's 87th minute winner

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, I had a 2-2 prediction for yesterday, as well. Perhaps the Charlton-Everton halftime score will hold up...

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

...or perhaps not.

Can you check my score, Steve? I thought I'd picked up rather more than that in this latest round.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you are correct, i gave everyone 20 points for the 0-0 draws instead of 30. this was bound to happen sooner or later. apologies, re-calculations in progress...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

update

101 = zebedee
96 = carsmile steve
82 = martin skidmore
73 = greig
73 = matt dc
67 = pj miller
66 = william swygart
65 = gareth
61 = billy dods
58 = benjamin

but don't expect another double points bonanza of this type for a while after this!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

How come you get more points for a 0-0 than anything else?

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i have proved my point. i will play sensibly from now on.

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You might start playing sensibly now zebedee, but I think I'll start doing 0-0's myself from now on.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

two 0-0s on one night is still not that common

i may put the 15 points for a 0-0 to the public vote soon though...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

If there was fun in getting the 0-0 somehow, I'd be up for it. But if it makes people less likely to predict 6-5 results, say, then it's a bad thing. I'd offer bonus points for correctly predicting games with 5 or more goals, maybe?

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

not a bad idea, but 6-5 is far more unlikely than 0-0 - at least people are getting lots of points this way

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, thus enabling them to leapfrog me :-(

I must have missed the nil-nil rule, because I genuinely think most matches are going to end nil-nil, but that's because I'm a miserable sod and I don't want to appear miserable, so I predict two-nil thrillers instead.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the 0-0 extra points rule was just added to provide some sort of consolation for when games disappointingly end 0-0. of course its possible for a 0-0 draw to be a thriller but generally, we want goals.

i'm guessing only 1 in 10 matches ends 0-0, could be an even lower frequency though. the mad thing is because there were a couple on Tuesday night people a few people got as much as 60 points just for predicting two correct results!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm aware of the extra points for 0-0 so have leant extra hard in that direction when it seemed reasonably likely. I'd get rid of the extra points there, but you must let us know in advance of a round, not after we have predicted.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the 0-0 extra points thing stays for now, unless it really does occur often enough to cheapen the whole shebang

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

5 or more goals in the match, Steve, not by 1 team.l

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

that evil genius zebedee got lucky this week - i'm now a bit concerned about the massive gulf between the top and bottom but i think things will balance out a bit more sooner or later - there's nothing to stop someone predicting all games as 0-0 or 1-0 or whatever but it just so happens you got quite a few goalless draws in the same week it was double points for correct results - annoying coincidence (unless you're zebedee)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, that would be completely boring.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have two suggestions from the wilderness of my BRANE:

1) Name one random match the BIG MATCH and give double points for that match only. The excitement will be unbearable.

OR

2) Allow us to each pick a match and PLAY OUR JOKER for double points, in a 'jeux sans frontieres' stylee. This is a bit complicated, but we will all CREAM OURSELVES on a weekly basis.

It's good anyway.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything with JOKERS is a good system as far as I'm concerned.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 August 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i thought of that Joker idea as you describe - its a good one - probably good to have some weeks without a joker/bonus type thing at all but we can definitely deploy it from time to time

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 28 August 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

but don't forget...

premiership predictions - round 03

you've only got til saturday lunchtime...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 28 August 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Another idea I had - do any of the big websites (BBC Sky etc.) have any professional pundit predictions that run as far as actual scorelines? It could be fun to feed them in, more work for stevem though but his reward will be in heaven.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 August 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, there's always Challenge Lawro: http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/challengelawro/index.shtml

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, I'm on Challenge Lawro and doing abysmally. In fact if anyone is doing the bbc fantasy footie and isn't in a league already, drop me a note of yr pin and I'll put you in the Zurich style Premiership (I'm looking at you here Mr Jones)
