*cries* -- she was paid good money to GO EAT TAPAS IN SPAIN. I am beyond jealous.

Just to make you feel better, it should be noted that Bilbao is a pretty drab city (Guggenheim notwithstanding). You want your socks blown off Espagna-style? Goto Barcellona or....better yet....La Coruna on the Medditerrenean.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

are you from NYC?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 17 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly not from Barcellona. (God, will I ever learn to restrain myself?)

nestmanso (nestmanso), Sunday, 17 August 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Going next month, not getting paid to unfortunately.

hstencil, Sunday, 17 August 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yes I am from NYC.....hence the name, Alex in NYC.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, your name is alex.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 17 August 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, and a gold star for you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 17 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

La Coruna isn't on the Medditerrenean (or anywhere near it). Barcelona is spelt like this and Bilbao has an atmospheric old quarter centred around 7 medieval streets. It also has a great fine arts museum near the Guggenheim and a smart Metro designed by Norman Foster.

If anyone disagrees, I'll meet you in a pub car-park and fight you with my fists

Yes it is.

Actually, you're right....it's on the Atlantic. My bad. Bilbao is still pretty drab. I can only speak from my own experience.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Bilbao.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(obv i have googled and read about a bit, but personal experience is always good)

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

I have not, alas, but i just thought I'd add to this thread by saying that if you happen to be in Madrid, don't miss out on La Caixa Forum.

San Sebastian is amazing.. a university town on the beach. The food is amazing, the highest concentration of gourmet anywhere in the world. Great surfing, great hiking, I've always enjoyed my stay in the Basque Country.

A Zed and Two Nults (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

so are there good bars and clubs n san sebastian then? i heard about the crazy michelin star levels there but reckon i'll just stick to tapas.

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

Get in with the locals by referring to the town as Donostia. And don't say tapas, say pinxtos.

I don't know anything about clubs there, but it is full of appealing bars where you can stuff you face with pinxtos.

If you are in Bilbao, check out the Guggenheim there. It has a giant puppy made of flowers, or did when I was there. I was only in Bilbao for an afternoon, but I reckon it would repay further exploration.

ymmv with the locals by saying PINTXOS (peen-chos) instead. :D

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

I thought pintxos were the tapas with a skewer

Periblepsis occasioned by homoeoteleuton (Michael White), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

OK, pintxos. Nope, in the Basque Country they are all kinds of little treats to be had in bars.

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

The name Pintxos might have roots in Castillian for toothpick but nah, it means straight-up deluxe bar food of all types.

one month passes...

I'm going to Spain in July and will probably venture up to San Sebastian for a few days. Recommended lodging?
