Watermelon, classic or...classic?

Is watermelon the perfect food? It is sweeter than heaven itself, it quenches one's thrist, it's bright pink, it comes in a cool green wrapping, it makes great punch, it is the ideal complement to a big BBQ, it is fabulous frozen....

But what I really want to know is: what's the deal with seedless watermelon? How do they get the seeds out of there? Is it some kind of genetic tinkering? That scares me. Picking out watermelon seeds is perhaps the only downside of watermelon (although spitting them out and gauging the distance is k-classic, in the right company), so I want to get behind the seedless stuff, but something tells me to be afraid.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not genetic tinkering, but it's tinkering. It's all about convincing the fruit to ripen before it produces black seeds.

BTW:
3 parts watermelon
1 part ice
1 part vodka
blend well.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This is late in the season for watermelons, anyway. For the prime melons, you have to wait until next year.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not eat the seeds? They're tasty and crunchy. Did I miss something poisonous being in there?

nestmanso (nestmanso), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently not, if you're still with us

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 18 August 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it IS genetic tinkering (of the mendel sort, not the modern laboratory sort)

if you take a normal diploid and cross it with a quadroploid, you get a triploid -- the seedless watermelon!! (2n x 4n --> 3n)

geeta (geeta), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, forgot something

electric fnord of carcinogens (electricsound), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(the x means 'crossed with', not 'multiplied by', you math pedants)

geeta (geeta), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, mendel. that's bringing back 8th grade science class.... thanks, geeta!

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Makes good barbecue sauce, too.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it IS genetic tinkering (of the mendel sort, not the modern laboratory sort)

*light bulb*

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what geeta said--tinkering with genetics, just not actively arranging and re-arranging the genome itself

or something

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally want a slice of Friendly's Watermelon Roll now, dammit.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's too, um, watery for me and I'm not too fond of the texture, but watermelon + cool whip is yummy. (normally I hate cool whip)

oops (Oops), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What, so I really *am* the only person alive who hates watermelon?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, it doesn't necessarily mean we killed the others.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 18 August 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like watermelon either. And I'll eat almost anything. Too much water, too messy ... and yeah don't really dig the texture either.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 18 August 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

where's trife when you want him to be around to talk some shit?

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 18 August 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

add to my complaints I don't even like the taste.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 18 August 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you watermelon-haters also hate cucumber? Because I find these afflictions are linked.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 18 August 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

when I was in Jordan, there were a huge number of ppl selling watermelon, which had usually already been cut into slices ready for consumption. The sensible ones (who appeared to be very much in the minority) had set up their stalls under canopies to protect them from the searing heat, but most were selling their watermelon on uncovered stalls so it was all dried up and most unappetising! It usually had flies crawling on it too which the traders made no attempt to discourage.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love cucumber!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I love cucumber *and* I love watermelon (but not Jordanian watermelon, obv.)

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i love cucumbers and watermelon!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 18 August 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm I had watermelon for breakfast. yum.

j0e (j0e), Monday, 18 August 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer cantaloupes actually!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 August 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate watermelon despite it being a triploid, but i like cucumber

mark s (mark s), Monday, 18 August 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

with cucumbers, I think you only have to ensure that you remove the flowers as soon as they appear to get the soft colourless seeds rather than the proper hard gritty ones that can actually grow into new plants? So no genetic tinkering is actually necessary?

I think of the melons I like watermelon the best, followed by gallia and then honeydew. Never had cantaloupe.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 August 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

regular un-special watermelons are diploids

(mark only eats dodecaploids: this explains why he likes marmite)

geeta (geeta), Monday, 18 August 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

marmite crossed with nutella!!

*mendel faints*

Watermelon is a good source for lycopene and beta-carotene, and it's yummy!

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Larcole - is that a good thing?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

They're both antioxidents, so yes.

I like honeydew melons best.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

those are good too. i had a "honeydew melon" bubble tea in chinatown a few months ago. it was horrifying. it was greener than a patch of well-tended grass, it was so sweet as to induce toothache, and the powder didn't really mix well with the ice. it didn't taste much like honeydew either.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate cucumber with a vengeance. They killed my partner two days before his retirement. But watermelon, though not my favorite people, are ok by me. I'll eat them if they're there, but I don't actively seek them out or purchase them. Mainly the texture, seeds, and messiness disagree with me, but the taste is pretty good. Watermelon and vodka and ice sounds great. Maybe we can have that at Sarah's birthday cookout.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never tried watermelon and vodka, but watermelon margaritas are great -- I tried one after seeing my ex sprinkle a little salt on some melon.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cut a hole in the side of a watermelon (big enough to fit the top of a bottle of dark rum inside) fill it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the demolition derby I went to yesterday had a 'watermelon bonus,' ie a watermelon set up in a styrofoam planter in the middle of the pit at the beginning of each heat. the car that hit it got a hundred bucks, but of course also the meeting of bumpers with other eager drivers.

cucumbers are best as a foil to spicy/vinegary food. also when they're turned into sour garlic pickles.
