what can i do to make my bedroom quieter?

no factious responses please - it's not seeing that much action. my problem is that i live on a reasonably busy road and it gets a bit noisy in there at times, so i'm looking to do something to the window in order to dull outside noise... i rent the apartment, so i don't want to have double glazing fitted, but am prepared to spend a few quid on a secondary window or something. the windows are BIG old sash jobs, so this may factor into any decision i make... ideas?

Do you have massive fuckoff heavy curtains? I love that shit! You might find some at a secondhand place, w/some luck

I find that if you keep a fan on, near you, that the sound of the fan blocks out excess noise and you eventually fall asleep. This has the pavlovian side effect of needing the fan to fall asleep to, though. It really does work.

Shoot the dog.

white noise generator. fans or a window a/c works wonders.

ear plugs, probably the cheapest solution and pretty effective.

Glue eggboxes to the outside walls.

record the noise of the traffic outside onto your computer, and then create an inverse of that waveform and then put that on repeat when you go to bed and let destructive interference do its work.

this is next to no help... thank you...

Oh twist my arm, I'll double-glaze them for free then I suppose.

In the meantime you may want to try some combo of the big massive fuckoff heavy curtains and earplugs.

Haha I love it when people post questions to ILX and then bitch when they get ridiculous replies, what on earth does anyone expect? I was ready to post "Kick the clowns out".

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 18 August 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a fair enough question but yes you can't expect too much out of this place.

Particularly when we don't know the room, the window, the level of noise, or the thickness of the walls. This sounds like a question for the landlord.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he was asking abt some sort of short-term solution and he actually got a couple of serious replies.

Turning the radio on down low and falling asleep to it works for me. Our place is loud with huge sash windows too!

on this topic, can anyone help me to draft a note for the cockfarmers who live upstairs which, while not actually being threatening in a legal sense, will suggest that if they don't stop shouting loudly and playing shite Spanish pop music on schoolnights I might well go mad and kill them?

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear Cockfarmers,

If you don't stop shouting loudly and playing shite Spanish pop music on schoolnights I might well go mad and kill you.

My best,
The Dirty Vicar

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the answer is probably to just start blasting back really loud and shite Norweigian folk music.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Bert and Ernie are trying to go to sleep the drip-drip-drip of their leaky faucet is driving them bonkers. They argue about who should try and fix it, Ernie is drafted, but he can't do anything about it, so he turns on a fan to drown out the drip. But that's bothersome as well, so he opens the window to drown out the fan. Then they turn on the radio, and on and on. It was like a noise fugue, sound piling ontop of sound. Eventually the entire apartment is a cacaphony, whereupon Bert and Ernie promptly fall asleep.
