Am I proud of me? When I have achieved something, then yes I am proud of myself. When someone tells me they are proud of me it is the best feeling in the world. If I am proud of someone, I always tell them. I think it is a personal way of congratulating someone & going just that little bit further with it. Self-importance I think is rather different in that you imagine you are more better than everyone else. You can be proud of yourself witout being self-important.

Do 100 lines Gareth.

I'm not very proud of anything but sometimes I think I'm better than other people (I'm not proud of that either)

I experienceed pride last night but it wasn't for me, rather it was for a good friend. I saw him play live for the first time at the Cobden Club and I felt that he and another mate blew everyone else on the bill away. And I felt myself starting to glow. The feeling was a combination of all sorts of things though, the recognition that his music and words were engaging with the audience, the smiles on the faces, the empathy for him up there and knowing something of that beautiful buzz, the respect for his skills and assurance on stage, the trepidation that it could all go the way of the pear and the calm slow dawning safety of the knowldege that they were actually too good for it to go like that, the general bonding and feeling of support that we as a group brought along with us, the insider knowldege that I have of the risks and sacrifices I know he has made to get it this far and this good, and of the relentless impossible questions he has asked of himself. I was buzzing to be there and share in the moment and transferring myself for my boys, I though, yeah, I'd be pretty happy with all of this. Taken all together, yeah, I guess you could call that warm glow pride.

I think pride can be object-centred and self-importance can't. A businessman who feels he has worked hard for his money might be proud of that, and might also be self-important, but he might also be proud of the things he's bought with the money he's made. Creative people can be proud of the things they do. I'm quite proud of Freaky Trigger.

You can also be proud of other people too.

I think pride is different from self-importance. I'm often quite proud of the things I write but that comes from a sense of work well done and self-satisfaction that I've managed to go round all the bases I wanted to and say the things I wanted in the way I wanted. If I was to feel self-important about same piece of writing I think I'd be expecting others to value it as highly as I do (ie I would, vicariously through the writing, be in my mind 'important' ie useful / valuable / likeable). Pride in my writing is directed inwards and only manifests outwards not as expectation or anticipation of praise or worth but as happiness for and in myself.

I'm not sure pride works a vice unless you are religious.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I get proud of myself when I find a nice shirt, I'm pretty easily pleased with what I do.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys obviously don't get what the Biblical meaning of the word "pride" is. That's ok; 95% of the people whom I talk with who didn't get the same sort of religious education I did (heh! this is starting to sound so uppity!) don't get it either.

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be in response to the "pride thread" on the list of threads linked to by N., of course.

"there's that word again: pride/ Do you pride yourself on being alive?"

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I have low standards for myself. I am proud of getting out of bed within 15 minutes of the alarm. I am proud if I drink the free coffee at work instead of splurging for a fancy one. I am proud of myself for going to band practice when I'm feeling lazy.

I guess I constantly outshine my expectations.

Sarah is putting an everyday face on pride. I agree with her completely.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm proud of a few things. Fighting through my depression of the last two years and sort of coming out the other side is the hardest thing I've ever done, and I have some cautious pride in that - cautious because it may not be all in the past yet.
