OK stop ruining the other thread, you mentalists. Wearing a dress shirt is hot. Wearing a suit is hot. What in the fuck.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

There is really nothing in the world that is sexier than a man dressed up and I'm not quite sure why there was such confusion over this concept on the beautiful/pretty/sexy/attractive/handsome thread.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally. Thread. Clearly.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

There's one thing sexier, and that's the girl in pants and a bloke's shirt, obv.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

no disagreement here.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Shirt with jacket over it/on arm/clearly on the cards = well-dressed.

Shirt by itself (particularly with blue jeans) = UK lairy (possibly due to old 80s Daz skinhead ad).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

a guy in a suit is about as sexy as you can get.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

when guys wear oxfords untucked w/the sleeves rolled up...hottness.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what I like best about ILX? When people don't bother to respond to a thread but rather point out that it's obviously started by so-and-so! That's helpful and informative and conversatonal and social and not at all rude!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I figure wearing a dress shirt/suit combination -- which no matter how well fitting and cut is still a touch uncomfortable and restricting by default -- is no more or less an inconvenience than a woman wearing something equally formal, equally sexy and potentially equally uncomfortable. And they've actually probably got it worse given this culture and its various biases.

I've gotten compliments (and more besides) on my combinations and I certainly don't mind that!

Nonetheless, wearing a suit regularly as a corporate uniform because everyone else does = dudder than dud.

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, not tryna be rude at all!! sorry, but it was one of those "I know exactly who this is" things.

praying mantis, can I quote you on that? that's my favorite thing to wear ever.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

but coming home to woman all excited by hotness in suit = classic! for me at least.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

suits are cool - as i stated, i have two... one very nice paul smith one and another nicole farhi one, but i really want one by dries van noten... for shirts i like paul smith and gieves and hawkes... for ties, i rate hermes v highly and for shoes, i love church's traditional english numbers...
see, i can be v smart (even though ally would apparently prefer me to be topless). i cannot, however, tolerate button-down collars on shirts... these are for spazzers and wearing one with a tie warrants being beaten senseless...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

depending on the girl i find it quite irrelevant what she's wearing with regards to whether i fancy her or not. e.g. Keira Knightley looks just as good in t-shirt and jeans as she does in the corset in Pirates Of The Caribbean - but that's just me. age has something to do with it. i figure George Clooney would look signifcantly less sexy in a leather jacket and jeans than if he was wearing a tux. of course, leather jacket and jeans on all men is hideous unless you're the Fonz, and even that is dodgy territory.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, g, I'm in a really "I hate the people of ilx" mood today--it's nothing personal.

Nonetheless, wearing a suit regularly as a corporate uniform because everyone else does = dudder than dud.

I don't think they do that because everyone else does. It's a mandate. Anyway who cares why they are wearing it if it looks good. If my boyfriend showed up in a suit at my house=instant sex.

I mean obv you're going to fancy someone even if they are wearing crap clothing, it's more that they look even hotter in certain types of outfits.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean obv you're going to fancy someone even if they are wearing crap clothing, it's more that they look even hotter in certain types of outfits.

yep, i'm just thinking generally women make a bigger deal out of this than men?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Ally - totally hot.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha well yeah, I think science has proven that men kind of don't give a fuck.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

mean obv you're going to fancy someone even if they are wearing crap clothing, it's more that they look even hotter in certain types of outfits.
Oh yeah def, I fancy J all of the time, but sometimes he just looks that little bit more special and hot is not the word!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the girl in pants and a bloke's shirt, obv
By pants do you mean pants or panties? Oh, the insanity!

I love it when NA is suited up and wearing after shave. :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

but i can understand that - as i said, i took George Clooney as example of popular sex symbol, and he's just the kind of guy who looks ridiculously good in a suit - so much so that in anything else he probably only has half the appeal. truth or cobblers?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to post a picture of me in a suit when I get home.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Cobblers! George Clooney plays basketball at my gym and let me tell you he's still hot without the suit!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That's helpful and informative and conversatonal and social and not at all rude!

Can I chime in about a bag of dicks now or later?

Wait, whats the use?.? Nevermind.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of see what someone was talking about now. Never mind.

N., I'd like to see yr suit. What does it look like?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think they do that because everyone else does. It's a mandate.

See, I sometimes wonder -- I'm not being snarky here, I'm actually curious -- if there's a formal 'dress code as part of job requirement' thing for a lot of businesses (beyond the military and obviously uniformed jobs like UPS etc.). I'm sure there is, but is it actually set in writing in a lot of places? Because it seems to me that (if you're a guy at least) you can be perfectly formal with a good buttoned shirt tucked in, pants with belt and some good shoes without having to add an extra layer of suit and tie as well when it comes to everyday work. I dunno, that always bemused me that more people simply don't do that.

it's more that they look even hotter in certain types of outfits.

Well yes, thus my point above about female formal outfits, it goes both ways.

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i could start a thread called 'Bra. Pants. Hot' i guess! but its a stereotypical view that with men 'less clothing = more aroused' regarding women. that Evanescence lead singer could be wearing an enormous cloak that completely conceals her figure, but i'd still find her just as hot as if she was in Trinity's leather catsuit.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

in newpapers, the job i work in, i wear jeans sneakers and t shirts, tho in the old days it was considered bad form to keep yr suit jacket on as it implied you weren't really working hard...

balaclava helmets = much better than any suit tho...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

dave i hope you wear a green visor.

anyway, women in male-style suits inc. trousers = not so hot. indiegirl style shirt and tie is good. formal/corporate style shirt, tie and skirt/blouse = super hot

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ned: lawyers. Gotta look good for clients/jury.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I sometimes wonder -- I'm not being snarky here, I'm actually curious -- if there's a formal 'dress code as part of job requirement' thing for a lot of businesses (beyond the military and obviously uniformed jobs like UPS etc.). I'm sure there is, but is it actually set in writing in a lot of places?

No, it's not seeming like a sarcastic question to me, it's a good one. It actually is a requirement at a lot of businesses. The tie thing is specifically written into the dress code as a mandatory thing. I think that most men would choose not to put on the tie otherwise! In my office no one wears ties until absolutely necessary (ie when they get called on it, "Haha you don't have a tie on yet and it's 9:45!")

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

no steve i just go for the balaclava... one of the ones with the whole face showing... this look seriously needs reviving

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

at the investment bank I worked at for three years, the New York office was "business formal" (i.e. wear a tie) although the Chicago office wasn't. Once I moved to New York, I still didn't wear a tie as it seemed like most support people (i.e. non-bankers) like myself didn't wear ties.

I don't mind wearing a tie but I don't want to work someplace where I have to wear one again.

hstencil, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem I am not allowed to wear trouser suits to work, the "super hot" style that you espouse is my required costume and I'm not so fond of it anymore. Maybe this is why guys do not understand this thread so much.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the places I've worked had actual dress codes. Here, I don't think there is one. But if my boss comes in to work wearing shorts, the Broker usually gives him a sort-of-fake punch in the arm and teases him.

Anyway, what is up with casual Fridays? When did it all start? It amazes me with what some people get away with. Our receptionist wears Britney-esque deconstructed jeans and barely there shirts. And it's not like we have any less clients in the office on Fridays. I mean, I'm all for it, but isn't it all very odd?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha my company has "casual fridays" in which the girls dress code is no different than it is during the week! The only difference is boys are allowed to wear polo shirts. I'm like, that's not really quite casual at all, is it. We weren't allowed to wear sandals for the longest time, I think it was because one of the partners had a foot fetish, because he was always walking around, talking about our shoes.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Did all the women at your work wear sandals like this?
http://www.kwsf.com/thumbnails/sandal2.jpg

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of wish we did.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think employers in the UK are allowed to forbid women from wearing trousers to work any more.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They aren't allowed to in the US either.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

all the above but porky pig style!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

tht bottom example is what i will be wearing to ally's non-existent wedding...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

So how come you can't wear a trouser suit to work?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The dress code in my office is kind of vague. When I first started working here, it was slacks, dress shirt, tie unless a casual day was specifically specified, but it's degenerated. I stopped wearing a tie because no one else (including my boss and any client that ever comes in the office) ever wears a tie. I'll wear a short sleeve button-up shirt if it's hot and I know there are no clients coming in. And we don't have casual Fridays, we just have random casual days based on what's going on in the office each day.

I feel like the women in the office dress casually pretty much every day. One gets away with wearing black jeans, I guess those count as dressy for a woman.

I need to get some nice suits that fit right so I can go to job interviews and also because they look hottt. I also need to start a band that wears suits when we play. Like a ska band.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are you all bringing up this wedding over and over? It was just a theoretical statement, you know, a colloquialism. You'd think you'd never heard such a thing before.

Archel...um, well, I've just been told not to. I was given a year end review which entailed picking out new clothes for me. It was quite Pretty Woman. I have been advised not to partake in casual Friday. This is kind of part of why I'm quitting this hellish job.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I wd quite like Matt to have to wear a suit to work, because a) yeah it does look hot and b) the process of changing from 'work clothes' into 'playtime clothes' is also hot.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I possibly look better in a suit than in anything else. I've got the body shape for it, I guess - tallish, broadish, defined waist, longish legs. I've never owned a rally flash suit, though, so maybe when I win the pools, etc.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally i think its pretty shocking you're not ALLOWED to wear trousers to work - but i know thats still a common (if archaic) 'rule' in corporate city sectors here and there

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

just go for the balaclava on casual friday and they'll prob fire you... while looking for balaclava pictures i dsicovered there's a company making latex ones, too. evidently people use them as some kind of sexual prop... THAT ROX!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann you have inadvertently dredged up the memory of a dude in a CARGO KILT I saw a while ago.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I wore a suit last weekend to a fancy restaurant full of millionaires...funny thing was, they all had jeans and docksiders on. People came up to my date and i saying we looked great...which makes me wonder what happened. I mean, this place was truly expensive(my bill was about $350 for two), and i think it was meant to be formal...but the rich folk just didnt care. They had money, so they wore what they felt like wearing.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to get something other than the fancy-dress pinstriped three piece. I don't think showing up to interviews dressed like a cross between a pimp and an undertaker is going to land me anything in this industry. Then again you never know...

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I just have to say that I busted out my suit for a couple of interviews this past week, and regardless of whether I got the job(s) or not, I am simply happy knowing that I looked fanfuckingtastic.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I showed up at my "job interview" ie bar in a suit with a soaked thru white blouse, it immediately landed me a job in my industry, amazingly not the porn industry?? Might as well be.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Im a systems administrator, and we all know that computer support fuckers wear jeans/t-shirts. So, why is it that i must wear a suit to an interview? Beating around the bush, aint it? Once again life looses control...

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ann, yr question is why do women look good in the trad garments of either sex, whereas men only suit their own... for me, the crucial factor here is not the suit/dress, it is the fact that it has a woman in it...

Putting on a suit makes me feel goodand hot especially when I break out one of my Brooks Brothers Ties. granted it only happens a few times a year. Not required to wear one. The key to a good suit, is nice shoes and a brilliant tie.

And there is nothing sexier than a woman in a mans dress shirt, and nothing else.

I wear a suit every day for work, and most ILXers are therefore used to seeing me in one, since we usually FAP in the week. I don't look hott or even hot in mine, obviously. I go for cheap ones. I did try wearing more casual clothes at work for a bit, but my next most casual clothes are jeans and t-shirts, and my boss did suggest that I wasn't projecting the right kind of image and so on. I know I'd be okay in smart casual clothes for the days when I don't have real top-level meetings, but that would mean buying another lot of clothes just for work, and I can't be bothered. Maybe when I need to buy more I'll take that approach.
