and they say that it actually has a tiny amt of caffeine in it, too!

pointless - like alcohol-free whisky...

maybe good if yr a mormon, tho...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

A tiny ant of caffeine?

Thy Lethal Zen Ned (Ned), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

known as the "piss-ant"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've bought some ground coffee which is a mixture of caff and de-caff. I'll report back when I get to it.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no defense possible

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It didn't come out of a monkey's ass.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend J once made a slushy from frozen coke and coffee.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When we went out to eat with my family this weekend, my mom insisted I get decaf coffee cuz she says I get crazy on caffeine. But then my Grandmother was like, "NO! Decaf will kill you! My doctor said so!" Real coffee it was then.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, okay, so I've had this weird health problem lately that sometimes results in a high heart-rate, so I've been trying to cool it with the caffeine, but coffee is such a ritual in my life -- what, am I supposed to go to a coffee shop and drink tea? -- that it's nice to still be able to drink it, even if I don't get the effects.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ummm, why will decaf kill you?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

what, am I supposed to go to a coffee shop and drink tea?

I kinda doubt people would laugh and point, JMC. They do sell tea, you know.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, that's exactly what you should do -- drink tea. It has all the lift, but less caffeine. It has some other chemical that acts synergistically with the caffeine. I'll look it up. (No I won't.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a reformed coffee drinker, as I have stated elsewhere on ILX. Just the smell of a fine Berkeley brew is enough to make my diseased stomach wave the big white flag. Oh precious bean, how I miss you so...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

They have to use some pretty strong chemicals to pull the caffeine out. Fermaldihide even? (wrong spelling, I realize) Thus, it can be bad for you.

Some green teas are very high in caffeine, aren't they?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but green tea is easy on the stomach and loaded with antioxidants.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda doubt people would laugh and point, JMC. They do sell tea, you know.

Oh yeah, I know. No, it's not about how I look, it's about how I feel. There's just something about drinking coffee that makes me feel good -- habitual associations, perhaps. Plus, I like the taste better.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone had yerba mate -- supposedly energy-boosting but w/o caffeine's side effects?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

According to Frequently Asked Questions about Coffee:

Currently used solvents for decaffeinating coffee include, H2O (water), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), Meth. Chloride, Ethyl Acetate. Note: A relatively new method called Swiss Water Decaffeinated uses "flavor-charged" water in the decaffeinating process.

I'm assuming that the amounts of methyl chloride in decaffeinated coffee are low enough to meet the FDA's standard of "no recognized amount of harm." But then I don't get the point of decaf, and if you or your grandmother don't want to take that risk, rock on.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

To obtain ALL, thou shalt not partake of the decaf.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand Yerba. It smells like a dirty sock.

i drink mate every day. i believe those who say that it should be considered a distinct chemical - say mateine (or guaraneine for guarana, etc.) - i can say that it is a stimulant, but in a much different way. it does not make me jumpy , jittery, nervous... does not seem to be as diuretic, and it has some nutritional value as well (B1, B2, iron, potassium, magnesium, some carb value)

drinking a lot of it can tweak me somewhat, but it's not nearly the same feeling as being over-caffeinated.

the flavor takes some getting used to i guess. i would recommend starting in with one of the flavored varieties. in fact all i have been drinking lately is taragui con hierbas serranas. the most prevalent flavor over the mate is mint. add a bit of sugar too.

i can't recommend the miel (honey) or pomelo (grapefuit). some particularly strong ones i've tried which might be good to avoid at first are rosamonte (& seleccion especial) and canarias. my fave plain one thus far is the taragui in the blue bag. (despalado - less tendency to clog the bombilla than the grinds which include the stems. the stem i don't think is so much the problem as the finer dust which seems to be in those grinds)

also the social aspect of drinking it in a group is cool (sharing the mate/bombilla, host/guest ritual) , although i am usually by myself so it doesn't apply most of the time

ron (ron), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard of this stuff. Can you just find it in a grocery store, or is it more of a specialty food / health store type item?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(right now I'm drinking a cup of [caffeinated] instant coffee; I think I've decided I like it better than regular coffee)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i get it at a latino grocery. there are also tea-bag versions which i've seen in more mainstream grocery stores, but i don't know what those are like.

ron (ron), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm.. I'll try to check it out. There's no shortage of latino grocers around here!

I'm a little distressed about being back on coffee after drinking exclusively tea for about 4 years. But man the rush is great.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the only one who can defend decaf??

Fine.

Some people can't/don't want to drink caffeine but actually enjoy the taste of coffee. People who have had or are at high risk of cancer (CANCER you bastards!) aren't supposed to drink caffeine. And people, like me, who get sick of being dependent upon the stuff also enjoy decaf. So, every once in a while when I'm out to eat or had a good meal I enjoy a nice cup of decaf. And nothing will stop me or my brethren.

Mormon coffee is actually brown-colored water, not decaf, by the way.

The defense rests.

Supposedly an "authentic" Cuban mojito is made with fresh yerba mate instead of mint. Has anyone here tried this verion?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tastes just like coffee. Doesn't make you as insane.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

McLusty - the half-caf coffee I was talking about up-thread claims to use nothing but carbon dioxide to remove the caffeine. So it might make you fizzy.

Also, whatever espresso coffee my parents use is decaf, cos my dad has chronic insomnia, but tastes entirely like the proper shit. Lavazza, probably.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I try not to judge you people -- really I do. But when I see you all drinking yerba mate and decaf and instant coffee, you wound me. Go ahead and drink decaf if you're off the caffeine, and miss the taste of coffee. If that tastes like coffee to you, you never could taste coffee to begin with. The difference is like butter to margarine. One is for food, the other for Kraft macaroni and cheese. And even that tastes better if you use butter.

Instant coffee? You get more iron drinking water from rusty pipes. And yerba? I like this quote: "the flavor takes some getting used to i guess. i would recommend starting in with one of the flavored varieties." Well put, sir. You said it perfectly well. It's nasty swill.

Come on, people! Where are the sensualists here? The ones who would walk a mile for a cup of buttery, chocolately Oaxacan?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i drink illy.

bbbut i though green tea was super low in caffeine?!?!

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe that some are, and some aren't, and package won't say. Some teas kick my ass, and some mellow me with this JUST RIGHT balance of caffeine. But tea has a lot of natural chemicals in it that can have various psychoactive effects (not to mention gastrointestinal ones).

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The word "psychoactive" must at all times be followed by the word "man".

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK DECAF

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

all that jive talk about decaf actually containing caffeine was a DIRTY LIE! what's it got, 3mg per cup?
