Who decided Janeane Garofalo was a political commentator and that I care what she thinks?

Just curious. She's on CNN right now.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she probably decided that for herself.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

your mother

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally = OTM, as well as probably my favorite poster of the day.

I wish she'd get back into standup and movies. She used to have a great standup routine and I used to really look up to her.

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That made my day, Dee. Thank you.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Who decided _________ was a political commentator and that I care what he/she thinks?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Lewis Black vs. Garofalo FITE

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Who decided Bill O'fuckin'Reilly was a political commentator? Who publishes Ann Coulter's "books"? Who decided "ARE ANGELS REAL?" was more important "news" than the Congo civil war or the Liberian conflict? Who wears short shorts? Who has the patent on the patent? Who did that song? The Beatles? No, the Who? Yes that's what I'm asking; who did that song? The Beatles...*head explodes*

IF BILL O'REILLY CAN BE A POLITICAL COMMENTATOR, WHY NOT JANEANE GAROFALO!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh hon, Bill O'Reilly started out a long while back as a journalist. He worked with ABC News for awhile. He's still friends with Peter Jennings, which I pointed out earlier and which certain people laughed their heads off over. He did his stint in the trenches as a reporter. He should be able to have his own political TV talk show. I'm not even going to go into defending Ann Coulter because I know certain types here will be all over me like the cliched stink on shit.

What did Jeanane Garofalo do aside from tour around comedy clubs with her standup gig? Sure, it can be observational about things, but only really and truly about one's own "world" (cf. Ellen DeGeneris' standup act, which remains solidly funny and great to this day).

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(please attach to my last post a < /knee-jerk nickalicious completely fed up with the entire state of the American mainstream media> tag to my last post, btw)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

...only really and truly about one's own "world"...

Now how is this different from O'Reilly or Limbaugh or Michael Moore or Thom Yorke or you or me or Moose and Squirrel?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but are angels real?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann Coultier is a horrible, horrible person who seems to be using the fact that she is blonde and a step away from the positive side of plain to unleash some of the most horrifying political commentary this side of Stalin.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure at some point Bill decided he wanted to go into that line of work...If Janeane is doing the same thing, well hey. It's been pretty obvious from her standup routine that she is a political person, and I think she's done a great job educating herself and speaking out about issues that matter to her. Well-informed activism is good stuff!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just frustrated because I turned on CNN for the first time (yeah I know, my first mistake) trying to figure out what the heck is going on in Israel and Iraq, and I get Garofalo staring back at me.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

why, I wear short shorts!

wait, no i don't. they won't fit no more.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i found her dull as a comedian/actress so if this is her new gig that's great.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

there was always something of the pedant about her.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I lost all respect for her years ago when she listed "I Wanna be Adored" as her all time favorite song.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What skills/experience must one have to be a political commentator?

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I give up. Janeane Garofalo makes the PERFECT political commentator. In fact, I think she should co-anchor ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings acting as the much more tolerant and modern Harry Reasoner to her more sardonic Barbara Walters.

*sighs, wonders if she should return to more neutral discussions*

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do we use the word "commentator" rather than "commentor"? How the fuck did that happen?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What qualifies someone to be a 'legitimate' political commentator? PhD in political science or a related discipline? A law degree? Journalism degree?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(I guess it would be "commenter" actually)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

tee hee don't sweat it Dee! ILE needs more smart conservatives!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do we use the word "commentator" rather than "commentor"? How the fuck did that happen?

Someone combined a comment with a potato and VOILA.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it used to be either a background related to the topic at hand (hence all the rent a generals during the war) or being a reporter that covers that beat (toobin, klein, novak, broder). now it just takes being loud and having some degree of name recognition.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Russets are just regular old common taters. I prefer Nicolas.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ha!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why journalists are seen as the best commentators...maybe they're too close to the thing they are commenting on. I don't know.

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it used to be either a background related to the topic at hand (hence all the rent a generals during the war) or being a reporter that covers that beat (toobin, klein, novak, broder). now it just takes being loud and having some degree of name recognition.

This is a very good point but unfortunately it's based on an assumption that the program is trying to reach people more interested in understanding the issues than being entertained. Janeane is very entertaining and I like watching her on Crossfire, but it's not where I go to educate myself on issues.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - you just quoted every talk radio marketing survey ever

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

uh oh; what does that mean and do you know I work for a radio station? THE MAN HAS GOTTEN TO ME.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

If Arnold Schwarzenegger can run for governor, etc.

(I figured someone oughta say it.)

Meanwhile, I've had an as-far-as-I-know-unrequited crush on Janeane for years (I never understood that whole cats & dogs movie, because Janeane was so clearly more attractive than Uma that I couldn't buy the premise), so if this means I get to see her more, that's good enough for me. Except that it doesn't, because I don't have cable. Still, more Janeane in the ether = a good thing.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I wrote her off for good when I saw her ranting on some talk show about how corporate radio didn't want you to hear good underground bands like...the strokes. she's turned into a female dennis miller.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I decided. CNN called me and asked who should be a political commentator, and I happened to be watching The Truth about Cats and Dogs.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, can we have some PERSPECTIVE here? The Strokes, for all practical purposes, are an underground band in the US. They've got a lower profile than THE WHITE STRIPES and WEEZER.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she's smart and thoughtful and funny, although sometimes she does the try-to-get-too-many-words-in-too-quickly thing and it works against her. All her detractors should pronounce her name "Jean-Ann Garah Folo" and you will find her much more entertaining whenever her shade-of-the-week hairdo bobs up on teevee.

nnnh she's not a rock critic and for that i am grateful

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

re: too many words too quickly - isn't that somewhat normal, given that she's a person in a low-respect field trying to project authority in an area where they aren't established/welcome?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i believe so

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

but it still works against her, it looks like she's just muttering sometimes

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but are angels real?

I was wonderin' that myself, honey, til I saw you...

What's your name, or can I call you mine?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm quite disconcerted that, 1/3 the way through the thread, I had my 'Schwarzenagger/Governor' comment all ginned up and ready, and then halfway through the thread, somebody named Jesse Fox steps in and makes it for me. I always suspected I had a doppelganger, but I had hoped to encounter him in a more dramatic fashion than this.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If Arnold Schwarzenegger can run for governor, etc.

And Rob Lowe can be a 'campaign consultant' ...

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So when is Bartlett throwing his hat into the ring?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, as far as the opening question goes, I think actually it was Bill Maher who decided.

I don't know who decided about him.

Maybe Dennis Miller.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU DISAGREED WITH THE PREMISE OF TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS??!?!?!?!?!

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno about anybody else but i never understood that whole 'triumph of the will' movie, i couldnt agree with the premise....

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, can we have some PERSPECTIVE here? The Strokes, for all practical purposes, are an underground band in the US. They've got a lower profile than THE WHITE STRIPES and WEEZER.

She's been championing the white stripes the same way. In the same breath, I think. "Underground bands like the strokes and the white stripes". oh how i laughed.

Dan I., Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

why is that incorrect ?

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(I think Janeane Garofalo is stunningly gorgeous. So I do agree with some of you here. Surprise developments, film at 11.)

(*sneaks back out of thread*)

Jane Datsun (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet thats what 90 percent of americans would say if you asked them to name some 'indie rock' bands

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But if 90% of Americans have heard of them can they be considered "underground?"

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

when the majority of people think they are, and theyre marketed as such, yes

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, since when does indie rock = underground trife

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronald Reagan opened the door, who's gonna close it?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what a good place to find out what the underground scene is for middle America is? An internet message board filled with people with 10,000 CD collections. THat's how I go about my marketing and sociology studies, at least.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes ("I don't like them" "Yeah, me neither! It's like, get a bass player!"), the Hives, and the Vines are all mentioned in "Freaky Friday," but not the Strokes. Therefore they are still underground.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's, like, get a bass player!"=tres classique. This is how all reviews should be written.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

Anyone catch her on Real Time with Bill Mahar last night? God she was awful, hogged the show, rambled on with dogmatic, two-dimensional poliltical non-sequetors, and seems to have had some kind of strange plastic surgery that has left her looking like her skin is weighing down on her skull.

dally, Saturday, 22 September 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think you meant to say, not only is JG stupid, but she's ugly too!

libcrypt, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I think you're both right.

Kerm, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

the stuff with her in that snl book is really awful - i dont doubt sandler-era snl was sexist & homophobic but a sketch where two dudes argue about whether or not one of them screamed 'like a girl' is hardly sam kinison material

and what, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I still can't make myself actually dislike her, but Jee-zus. She should really just have Aaron Sorkin write her dialog for all public appearances.

en i see kay, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

libercrypt: I don't think she's stupid but I think plastic surgery makes men and women look awful. It's sad to see someone who used who used to be (correctly or not) associated with the indie/punk set of values fall so headling into the worst aesthetic pitfalls of monied LA-Hollywood culture.

She lives in my neighborhood - I see her in my local D'agostinos quite frequently. I tend to agree with her politics, but she is getting quite odd looking, which is sad. I thought she was above that route.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 22 September 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Me too, I've just watched a bit of that Real Time and I pretty much agreed with everything she said. Yeah, she hogged it a bit but I couldn't follow what Rushdie was saying anyway and that bloke on the end wasn't even trying. I don't even think she looked that bad!

Ned Trifle II, Saturday, 22 September 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Trifle II, Saturday, 22 September 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

stevienixed, Saturday, 22 September 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I think she seemed coked up to be honest, the way she was going on and practically free-associating.

dally, Saturday, 22 September 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)
