Over here it costs usually around 75p ($1.19) per litre, this equals roughly £2.75 ($4.37) per (US) gallon, with about 80% of this going to the government as duty, ostensibly to discourage people using cars too much - much the same as the rest of Europe.
I know that places are a lot further apart in the States than over here meaning a real need for cheaper fuel if travelling is required, but how would you feel if your prices were to fall into line with ours as an environmental (both local and global) measure?

I'd actually like to see this happen, and the United States to reconsider its policies that emphasize personal cars over public transportation and pedestrian-oriented urban development. But between the oil and car companies' political might and the powerful public opinion in favor of cars, this isn't likely to happen.

Apparently black-market gas was a bit less than $2.50 a gallon in Baghdad back in March, with the official price about half that.

Don't know about that. Don't think cutting trips to the video store to save gas is going to be the first line of cost-cutting.

Gas prices going up again by 35%.
Sam Laidlaw, Centrica's chief executive, said: "This is a business that has got a million shareholders - a lot of pension funds and people have got their savings invested in British Gas shares and we have to look after them".
So let's get that right - British Gas are happy for poor pensioners to freeze to death in order to subsidise the lifestyles of rich pensioners.
Maybe we'd better have another go and see if Communism can work in practice...

so they're telling me my gas bill is being used to subsidise a gamblers winnings?
― Ste, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)
Essentially, yes.
They're not even pretending to use world oil prices as an excuse any more - they could hardly do that since prices per barrel have recently shot down by almost the same amount in the opposite direction.
Yes, millions to be put in penury and the general economy to suffer just so that Mr and Mrs Hitler can go on their five-year-long sea cruise and build their fourth conservatory.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
Best thing is for people to vote with their feet and switch supplier, that's kinda how the system works. Sure it's a sucky system, but if you're in it you have to play it.
― The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)
It's anticipated that most major suppliers will follow suit so it's into the woods and rub those sticks together.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
Well pick a non-major one then, they're about. www.uswitch.com is pretty good. I guess OAPs don't have that luxary tho. Is winter fuel payments still only £250?
― The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)
I don't have to. I switched away from B/Gas some while back. I'm talking about those who don't have the luxury of switching.
My mum gets £300 in winter fuel payments but don't forget that's in Scotland.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)
Gordon Brown doesn't mind nationalisation, as long as it's Northern Rock.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)
Well, I think he does. The two big nationalisations recently have been event led rather than policy led. How much would BGAS cost to nationalise, and would the electorate be happy with that many billions of pounds being spent on it?
― The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)
Well the electorate can SHUT THE FUCK UP about gas prices then
― Tom D., Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)
My gas bill is currently £870 for a three-month period in a three-bedroom house. This seems ridiculously high, is it?
― Matt DC, Monday, 6 April 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
can only compare with using oil over here (which is expensive) it's enormous
― Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Monday, 6 April 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)
That does seem pretty high. Gas bill for our 3-bedroom house for Nov-Feb was about £350. Is your bill based on estimates? Who's your supplier?
― NotEnough, Monday, 6 April 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)
I've just got a bill for £300 for gas for a 2-bed flat (it's estimated, and due to a fuck-up on their side I've failed to do anything about since last June I've no way of checking how close it is), which I thought was bad enough. The energy companies have just started backdating price rises haven't they? (just in time for the prices to actually go down in real terms)
― new drone spider (j.o.n.a), Monday, 6 April 2009 14:36 (sixteen years ago)
Matt, check the period of billing as well. They may have charged you for 6 months there.
Meter reads are always u&k though. Being billed to estimates sux the monkey. Even if it's only a couple of units out, you still feel like you're being jipped.
― NotEnough, Monday, 6 April 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)
That's based on a meter reading. Although I may have cocked it up, I don't know. The meter was last read in December so it can't be backdated that much.

― Matt DC, Monday, 6 April 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
No, that's about what we have it on. Although we tell the heating to go up to 20 degrees rather than 22 - dunno how much that saves.
― NotEnough, Monday, 6 April 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)
They're talking about natural gas. The picture just posted is petroleum prices by the gallon.

"Your estimated daily gas usage:
This quarter last year: .23Last quarter: .23This quarter: .1
[Estimated] Charges this period £21.14"
turns out the actual gas used for this quarter is, you guessed it, closer to .2 than .1 for an actual bill of £46.64
dear edf, use some common sense.
