Nothing against Rita Rudner , but ...

WTF is the deal with her bizarre 3 AM talk show??? Where she and her guests grapple with some sent-in advice-columnist-style 'problem'? Or rather, they grapple and she conducts a la Bill Maher and then steps in and sets the record straight a la John McLaughlin. These comparisons aside, what would people say are the nearest relatives of this horrific televisual mutation? Like it's somewhere between _______ and ________.

And oh, btw: what is the deal with this format's proliferation? I'm just realizing the Colin Quinn show is another one ... somehow I feel Win, Lose, or Draw is at least implicated ...

The weirdest thing is the canned, cue-card-contained 'riffing' the comics do on a given 'topic' on the Quinn thing ... like they were pundits on a news show reciting the 'off-the-cuff' analyses they're programmed to ...

(*sigh* i think i sorta just answered my own question)

enh, i like the colin quinn show, mainly he screws up almost every joke he does, and also becuase they're able to go a full 30 seconds before just insulting each other continuously, which i find to be more entertaining.

There are some good bits ... I really thought the antismoking hysteria thing was wonderfully inappropriate.

(Footage of rolling Israeli tanks, doctored to bear huge "no smoking" signs; every protesting Palestinian has had a cigarette stuck in his or her mouth ...)

My admiration for Rita Rudner has suddenly slid. :(

*wonders if Peter's Friends will replace lost admiration*

Quinn has good nights and bad nights, usually based on his guests. I can't remember the names of my favorites -- the huge fat black guy, and the good-looking sort-of hispanic looking guy who used to be a lawyer. Big celebrity guests always disappoint, and then there are the nights he has nothing but third rate hacks reciting OLD OLD jokes. It's painful. So every night now, I have to decide whether or not it's better than Futurama on Cartoon Network.

yup, i'm watching cable tv tonight for the first time in months and it was the same thing. new colin quinn show or futurama that i haven't seen.

I thought this thread was going to be from Maura moaning about people (including me) saying she looks like RR.
