Dr Abrhamstein Vs the Friendster Monster

for those of you on friendster- how do you feel about the guy who created it, this Abrahms guy? Do you think his crusade to delete fakesters is warranted? or is he stifling creativity? Some think he is a spoil sport upset with the fact that his creation is no longer his own, much like a pushy stage mother who hates her daughter because the kid decides to like t ball instead of pageants. Others would argue that the fakesters ruin the network because of their weak connections to too many friendsters. what is the prevelant opinion?

tell me abt his crusade to delete fakesters. I set up a friendster a/c but I haven't had time to use it properly yet.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

They also apparently just instituted a 200 friendster limit. A friend of mine (not a fakester) who legitimately has over 200 friends in his profile got banned!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

well, apparenlty he is actively hunting down and deleting the profiles of those deemed to be fakesters-anyone whose name is suspicious, uses photos that are against the rules, has a ridiculous number of friendsters, etc. wow! i cant believe they put a cap on the number of friendsters a legit friendster can have!
i read an article about it, not sure where. i will try to find it and post a link. if anyone else read it and remembers, do tell!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I am glad the day arrived.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I should have noted that my friend later pleaded his case and got reinstated, but his profile was down for about a week...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

a limit is not going to stop abuse of the system tho if the same ppl can set up several names using different e-mail addresses!

I wonder how many of the pictures here on sinister would break Dr Abrahamstein's rules?

he sounds like the guy who made a record with the Smurfs, btw.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I read that they're going to start charging after the beta trials are done. Charging for messages and stuff, that is. The article was linked on Fark a few days back. I would go try to retrieve it, but I'm tired.

me, the guy, Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And also, I can see why he'd want to get rid of the Fakesters. Yes, because his creation has gotten away from its original intent, but I think that's his right as creator. The more fake folks signing up, the less useful the thing is as it was originally intended. And it stinks that some non-fakes are being (harrassed?) as a result, but this is what happens when people don't follow rules. Others suffer.

me, the guy, Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

god, what a bunch of hall monitors you guys are! the fakesters are half of the fun. it is highly creative and entertaining. loosen up!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Creating a fake Justin Timberlake profile is hardly creative.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin TImberlake profile = not creative
sock profile = kinda creative

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, some of the justin timberlake profiles are funny if you read them, allthough that is the worst example. profiles of true love, the sars virus, noam chomsky, and many others exist that add humour and fun to what would otherwise be a meeting place for lonely hearted people.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it was the cover story of last week's SFWeekly

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the fakesters (*guilty myself*) but of course I can understand them wanting to delete them. Copyright infringement? Libel? Bueller?

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

what about the fakesters that represent cities or towns?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

those contribute to the clogging up of the system surely. I don't buy into "defeating the purpose" bit. but the arguments of system overload and copyright, yes. Some of the non-person ones are actually very useful, like Austin Parties.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the 200 friend limit has been rescinded

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 8 away from 100. Friendster me! dallasdeadgirl@netzero.com

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My argument was really that "man invents, man can make rules." Very basic. I can really see why he would have to be concerned about things like nasties on there trying to meet people under false pretenses, or getting sued for copyright infringement, or any host of things. He's just trying to keep his own ass safe, and as it's his own ass to do whatever he wants with, I say he should be able to.

me, the guy, Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That SF Weekly article is interesting. I think the "friendster revolution" people need to, uh, get a life, but man the owner comes off like a total dweeb. "Oh, I get it. You're friends are all smartass types."

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They also apparently just instituted a 200 friendster limit. A friend of mine (not a fakester) who legitimately has over 200 friends in his profile got banned!

What the hell? And here I thought the point of Friendster is/was to make friends. They can't slap you down afterward for doing just that! How can they tell how many real/fake friends each member has? If they actually are paying someone to check that out, there's no justice why I'm not working....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh oh, I have a faux friendster profile who has neraly 300 friends. I haven't checked in awhile. Poor Martha.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My jokey account got deleted, which is fair enough.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 21 August 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean Batz? That's still up. Or was there another one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 August 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the 200 friend limit has been rescinded

good. I only had 26 to go.

hstencil, Thursday, 21 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

show off.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 21 August 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's the one. It's still up, but it won't allow me any access to my account.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the fakesters!

I won't pay for friendster thou.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 21 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I value my friendship with Alice Cooper, he's a great guy.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 21 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just baffled as to why they would delete the part of Friendster that might, possibly, make it not suck. I mean, I finally put an account on there and linked to three - yes THREE - people I actually know quite well, plus gin.
And poof! There are suddenly 41,000 people in my "personal network," all of whom seem to be hipsters in theory glasses. WTF? I don't even KNOW anyone who lives in Williamsburg! Oh, how about I search "interests" for somebody who likes The Fall, and maybe I can make a new "friend"? OK, now I only have 2,000 hipsters in theory glasses to sort through. I might as well just walk into the record shop up the street and start talking to strangers.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 21 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF? I just logged onto friendster and:

"You are connected to 0 people in your Personal Network, through 19 friends."

????????

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It does that sometimes. Little glitches. It will go back.
