Nosebleeds

I'm having my first one ever. I'm here on my own. How do I stop it? Why do they happen? Can I ever blow my nose again? I'm sitting here with a wad of tissue shoved up each nostril (yeah, I know, classy) When I take the tissue out, it literally pours out. It's kinda scary, help!

ever? I have these ALL THE TIME. Pinch the top of your nose hard and lean forward. Stay that way for five or ten minutes if it's really bad. People always say put a cold washcloth on the back of your neck but I have no idea why. After it stops, be careful and blow your nose extra-gently for the next few days.

Ladies, do any of you also have nosebleeds more frequently when you start your period? What the hell is that about?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't you supposed to put a spoon or a bunch of keys down your back or something? I can't see how that could possibly work. Maybe it's just an old wives' tale. Kids at school seemed to get nosebleeds all the time, but I've only seen one person get them as an adult.

I've never had a nosebleed. Is this despite, or because of, the fact that I suffer from really bad blocked-up nose and general sinus problems?

Cheers teeny, but forwards? I thought perhaps backwards - this is what I'm doing. If I lean forwards, it pours out more.

Saskia, Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I normally do too Mark - blocked sinuses. As I said, this is virgin territory for me.

if you lean back it just goes down your throat.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to get these a lot when I was little.

Tilt head back and press your finger HARD on the side of the nostril until you seal it shut. Count slowly to 60.

Eventually the blood will clot. The gross part is hacking up snot/blood clot about 5 minutes after the bleeding stops.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to get two or three a week. I quickly discontinued the lean-back method - as mentioned, it just drains down your throat. It takes forever for me to clot, so it would usually make me sick, too.

I'd combine the tissue-stuffing and the pinching with a slight forward lean. After three or four minutes of pinching, it would mostly go away, and I could get by with just tissues for another five or six minutes. But that's really only applicable if you're a heavy bleeder.

i get them regularly when it's hot and dry out. i usually wake up with them. sux hard. because i used to get them so often when i lived at my mom's house and i'm so thin, she often questioned my use of drugs (at the time i was drug free).

yes, just pinch your nostrils, lean forward and wait. then do a little clean up. no one wants to see you with a bloody face unless you're Andrew WK

I heard of the lean-forward method from GI Joe, and they proved to be COMPLETE LIARS. At least in my experience.

I get nosebleeds all the time, usually when I'm sleeping (stuffy airquality/too many blankets -> dried nasal passages & higher body temp. = higher chance of nosebleed). Putting a wet cloth on your neck/forehead (and also b/w your upper gum and lip!) is to cool yourself down. I leave my head close to upright, just with a slight backwards tilt. I have no compunction w/ swallowing blood. In time it'll pass. Pinching is U&K.

If it has anything to do w/ chronically dry nasal passages, don't press hard on your nose obv., which can be remarkably hard to do sometimes inyour daily routines (e.g. washing your face, blowing your nose). Also, don't blow your nose hard. Don't overheat.

two years pass...

Am I the only chronic sufferer of these things on ILX? I'm surprised I never turned into a goff, the amount of blood I swallowed during my teenage years. The summertime bring them on something chronic as well... maybe to do with blowing my nose from hay fever?

I've been cauterised three fucking times, you know?

Stop picking!

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Bet you never heard that before. Hayfever's a fucker.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, allergic to nature - what kind of cosmic joke is that

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Eww. Never had one. They seem very dramatic though. Ideal for getting out of boring work meetings etc.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

a colleague (stet's immediate boss, in fact) gets them spectacularly. i was chatting to him one day and WHUMPH, there he went. "sorry," he boomed, in his booming and slightly posh way, "i'm bleeding from the face. anyway, like i was saying ..."

and he carried on chatting for a bit. respect.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

I get them all the time during allergy season, maybe one a week. Just before my nosebleeds end, I always have to blow out a clot of blood. I hope this is normal and not a sign that my sinuses are imploding or something.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I feel like I have half a fucking blood bank congealed in my nose, and I'm afraid to blow it in case they start again. yay the summer

Dom Passantino, Friday, 29 June 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

I have chronic rhinitis but I've only had maybe 2 or 3 nosebleeds in my whole life. I don't think it's connected to hayfever.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 June 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

i used to get these all the time as a kid

my various cures:

1. getting it stopped: only one way here: apply constant pressure with your finger about halfway up the side of your nose that's bleeding, pinning some tissue there too, to catch the blood. you'll feel the right spot. do this for like 10 minutes

2. after it's stopped, wait a bit then fill a glass all the way to the top with warm water and dissolve some salt in it. inhale it through your nose. this is disgusting but works

3. smear vaseline up there. this is a magnitude more disgusting and i never really did it but apparently it's foolproof
