After A Posting Desert, A Flood

I seem to be on a roll. I can think of loads of questions I want to ask on ILx. However, in the back of my mind is the "one question per person per day" thing which I am conspicuously flouting.

I know it was never a hard and fast rule, and think that few ppl here would want it to be one, but why was the rule thought up in the first place? was it to prevent one person totally dominating the New Questions section so everyone groans "Oh no, not them again!"? and is it acceptable if one has not asked a question in a long time to unleash a barrage, as if fulfilling some hypothetical quota?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't it to prevent Geir from spamming ILM with "My Favorite Albums of 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, etc."? Or did the rule predate His Hongroness?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it drifts in and out of urgent need: "oh not them again" is the main reason for it — the good reason not to unleash a barrage is that no one will post to most of them, so if they're actually questions you want interested answers to, probbly best not over-densify

(also: save some for the next drought!!?)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe the rule was actually instituted to save the server from Kate the Saint's more boring workdays

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You could just revive 800 threads by clicking on random.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Never knew that was any hard and fast rule about posting only one question. There are days I'm even tempted to ---gasp post two questions and be damned!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the "rule" predates any known or remembered malfeaser

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The "rule" is only about 6 months old, though?

(It's a silly rule, but if it keep wankers who start threads about their social life in check, then fine)

(not that it does, of course)

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark S's point about "saving some for the next drought" is a good one in theory, but the trouble is if I'm not organised enough to write the questions down then I forget them so I can't spread them out as he suggested.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 21 August 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the "rule" is nearly as old as the boards

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 August 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

But the thread about it isn't.

Mark H: have you tried pen and paper?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

there's an admin thread of tom's from like apr 2001, i think

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark C you are gunning to steal N's internet hardman tag, but are you also, like N, a "diamond geezer" in real life?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It was to do with some situation on ILM originally. The idea is that if there are too many new threads then some good ones - especially good serious ones that might need longer answers - get lost. But it's a guideline not a rule. Reviving old threads is always classic of course!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

not always, I can think of a few I'd rather not see again, haha.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, I was referring to one wanker in particular, and one thread in particular, not anyone else. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I am not a diamond geezer, really. I'm too posh and bitter.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

does poshness --> bitterness?

(I don't know, not being posh)

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Not in my case Mark.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(It's a silly rule, but if it keep wankers who start threads about their social life in check, then fine)
*winces*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh don't worry Mark I was only messing.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Now look what you're doing Mark C - if you don't like the guy* then just dislike him and either make it public or don't, making snidey anonymised references to him on other threads just makes nice people worried.

*I assume it's Millar given your contretemps on the other thread, if it's not then my apologies to you/him but the general point stands.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar is also nice people.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!

It's Doomie, Tom. I like Millar a lot. I didn't realise I was being so gnomic.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, I thought 'gnomic' meant 'like a gnome', I used it in an essay once to call Foucault a 'gnomic genius' - was I alright in doing so?

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey sorry Mark! (And sorry Millar!) But like I say it's not a good idea to anonymise these things.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Moaning about that loser, which got boring for everyone else 18 months ago, isn't doing me any favours, I know, so I'll shut up. Anyway, I think I'm disliking fewer people on ILX than ever right now.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Heh I'll admit I was wondering what you'd found so offensive about the Wednesday Night With Millar thread)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, I think I'm disliking fewer people on ILX than ever right now.
But we all love you Mark! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 August 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I did put it quite negatively, didn't I? ;)

I like everyone more than ever - is that better? I especially enjoy discovering how cool people are when I hadn't quite picked up on it previously. AIMILX is especially good for that.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

That's better! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 August 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So this is the thread where Tom Ewing codedly announces he doesn't like Millar! Scandalous.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear lord what have I let myself in for now.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

TOMWAR!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(NB I like Millar fine ambiguity hatas)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not what your subconcious says!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

He is the Tominator!

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

must...ban...all who share my name....grrr....can be only one...

Tom's Subconscious (Groke), Thursday, 21 August 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that make Ally the Terminatom?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(that was in response to Tom, I xposted with Mark, sorry for any ridiculous-film-confusion)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell me more about the princes of the Universe, George. < / ofmiceandmen >

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha i thought Mark C may have been referring to Millar as there've been a few threads lately about the fact that MILLAR LIKES TO DRINK AND HAVE A GOOD TIME. but they are pretty funny threads and he's a pretty funny guy so its all good. Mark C is also 'well good' in my opinion.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They're both awesome. You're all awesome. Give us a kiss.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally in inciting mass orgy shockah?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom on Tom action is not something I want to see, thanks but no thanks Mark C.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 21 August 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Pizza Christ thread was bad enough.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Pbbth HA HA HA HA thanks (my ears!! it burns!!)

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You should also grow a beard and then Tom Ewing will REALLY hate you.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Handlebar moustache all the way.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but the beard is really the key here.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

are you a beard, ally?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking of growing one.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Compromise: handlebar beard.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha i thought Mark C may have been referring to Millar as there've been a few threads lately about the fact that MILLAR LIKES TO DRINK AND HAVE A GOOD TIME.

So it's been Millar Time for the board lately?

(grins, ducks, and runs)
