Look at his suit!

Seriously though, he kind of reminds me of a cat.

(fill in blank poster) to thread to point out how this was obv. an "Ally Thread".

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That tie is godawful!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What, are you missing the rest of the outfit?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't be caught dead in a black shirt with that tie

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean he might look okay in that but me? Fuck some black dress shirts

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeets can't be on top form at all times. Man needs a rest.

Black dress shirts are awesome but they are more "evening wear" than "professional wear", for example.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

they're more winter Navy uniform if you ask me

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That's good too. I dunno how Jeets would look in that.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't help that the Michigan & No Limit hats totally clash w/ that suit. Jetes really can't pull off the "dorky philanthrope" look well.

That polka dot tie better match his socks.

Now, Willie Randolph (the guy next to DJ in the SI pic) is wearing a SUIT.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What's funny is I totally don't like the Yankees, unless they're playing a team I hate more, then I'm like the Yankees #1 fan. But Derek Jeter reminds me of a cat!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

How can there be a team you hate more than the Yankees?

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Boston and Atlanta exist?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

just want to point out i was serious when i asked if he was the jazz player. some guy at work played me a cd by some yankee player and i had to tell him i was am not impressed with cookie cutter jazz

kephm, Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That'd be Bernie Williams.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, I mean Waymon Tisdale.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about that. I hope the YES Network stopped playing Bernie's concert special. Bernie's music struck me more as sub-Santanian than cookie cutter jazz (the 30 seconds I heard, anyway).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Great photo of him with Willie Randolph. Anyone out there who grew up with the Yankees and Mets in the 80s - did you know Jesse Orosco is now a Yankee? He's 46 and the oldest pitcher in the majors.

nickdouglas (Nick D), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

willie randolph was my mother's favorite baseball player when i was a kid. she thought that he was cute.

and jesse orosco is still around? he's been pitching in the big leagues since 1979!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

He was a rookie before Dontrelle was born!

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 21 August 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

NOMAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Jesse Orosco? WTF?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - did you know Roger Clemens pitched for Boston against the Mets in the '86 series? He was a rookie that year, and pitched games 2 and 6 if I remember correctly.

nickdouglas (Nick D), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks baked in that pic with Willie. Like, blunted baked.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 August 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Thats because Jetes and Willie just got done having hot anal play with each other.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never said Jeter wasn't a HOFer, just a mediocre-to-awful defensive player whose name I never need to hear again after September.

also, #3 in Magary's article.

A lot here:

http://www.billjamesonline.com/where_have_you_gone_derek_jeter_/

Pick your side, and defend it until the other side walks away in a huff.

I think...and this is more speculation...but I think that in a strange way, Derek Jeter has come to exemplify that conflict. Not intentionally, of course: I don’t think Jeter had any specific intention to be the baseball representative of our national mood. It just happened that way.

clemenza, Saturday, 20 September 2014 01:22 (eleven years ago)

a few interesting thoughts, but horribly written with statements the author even admits are completely unsupported

mookieproof, Saturday, 20 September 2014 01:43 (eleven years ago)

I think his central point about Jeter as a lightning rod is very interesting, but some of the choices on his timeline of iconic players seem off to me. Garvey (unfortunately) seemed key in the '70s, Junior was quite iconic for a while, etc.

clemenza, Saturday, 20 September 2014 01:50 (eleven years ago)

I like Fleming's writing style a lot, even though (which actually explains why I like it) he's got James's voice down cold.

clemenza, Saturday, 20 September 2014 01:52 (eleven years ago)

i couldn't get through the first few paragraphs, fuck generalizing the "moods" of decades and shit and fuck generations and fuck paul simon, geez. this is like an article by a slightly smarter plaschke

baseball players don't reflect the national mood, derek jeter doesn't reflect anything besides the herpes epidemic

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Saturday, 20 September 2014 04:11 (eleven years ago)

The defining characteristic of Ty Cobb, again gleaned from books and accounts, was his absolute determination. In this regard, I think that Cobb echoed the value of his time and place better than Wagner or Lajoie. Determination was the aspiration of the land: four decades removed from the Civil War, America was focused on seeing its grand experiment through.

these are the platitudes i want to kill most

Jeter -- 1,307 RBI

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 27 September 2014 03:18 (eleven years ago)

I don't post here a lot but I would like to say this. I have been a base ball sport fan since I was a young boy, when my father took me to the big game at the stadium. Ever since then, I have loved everything about base ball: the bats, the gloves, the bases, all of it. But no base ball team has meant as much to me over the years as the New York Yankees, and no player of the New York Yankees has meant as much to me as Dereck Jetter. Something about the way he hit the base ball with the bat and ran around the bases fast made me excited to watch the games at the stadium, on the TV, or on my i-Pad. No one can say he was not a legend, and if they did say that, they would be wrong.

But now, with the tragic death of Jetter, those days are over. It is sad, but, there is this: I have promised myself that when I have a son, and he is old enough to watch base ball with me, I will share with him my love for Dereck Jetter. In order to do this, I will show him photos and videos of Jetter's home runs, grand slams, and base steals, all the most exciting moments of the base ball games. In this way, Jetter's memory will "live on."

Go New York Yankees!
