US Open 2003

The last Grand Slam of the year is upon us - the heat-hazed, hateful hotdogged hardcourt hootenanny of Hushing Headow.

The smart money, which is to say the most neatly stacked, if not the cleverest, says it's Roddick and Clijsters all the way.

A-Rod because it's 'His time' and 'He's Hott' and 'How do you return that serve?' and he's won 20 of 21 matches since being made to look like Darius (Danesh) to Federer's Marius (Brenciu) at Wimb, *but*, hang on a New Yawk Minute, he's got Our Tim in the first round! And who inflicted that solitary post-SW19 defeat on 'odds? Henman: in the Legg Mason semis in DC a few weeks back. TH won that event but flopped thereafter and so misses being seeded by a single ranking place. Prediction: TH beats AR and makes the quarters, *but* if someone like Safin (it's always Safin, isn't it?) drops out and allows Henny a seeded spot (and hence a different place in the draw, away from #4 Roddick), he'll lose to whichever no-mark he plays. Even if it's the gorgeously useless Robin Soderling.

Kim cos she's now #1 (the Williamses can't be arsed with the bread and butter WTA tour, it seems, so computer points flood into low-lying Belgium - plus Serena is out having an operation) and it's Her time and she's Hott and 'How can you be #1 without a major title?'.

I'm often to look (with a kind of dreamy intensity masking my mounting excitement) at the draw of this entirely imaginary tournament (not a second's coverage on UK terrestrial TV since... Edberg-Sampras in '92?). More later.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 21 August 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonesy, if you need to come round for coverage, just say. I presume that Eurosport has it?

chris (chris), Thursday, 21 August 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant 'off' rather than 'often' above. I didn't mean to appear *that* dreamy. I save my narcoleptic vapourness for the grasscourt season.

Mr Chris - space telly asphalt action would be great. Perhaps towards the climax of the event? Super Saturday, maybe? If it's OK with Vicky. I can load up your fridge with Duvel and Leffe in celebration of a Justine-Kim knucklefest.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be marvellous.

chris (chris), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

possible matches include a Big-Serve Classic: Mirnyi v. Dent, 2nd Rnd, and a Wimbledon Rematch: Federer v. Philipoussis, 3rd Rnd. I must go at least once.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

venus better win it this time, damnit.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh! A US Open thread!

Kim Clijsters will not win. I'm inclining towards Venus, injury pending, and if injury pends then Justine H-H will step into the breach. Kim's simply an inferior player to both.

Safin has pulled out but it's Juan Ignacio Chela who's been moved into the seeded position because the ATP fucked up the rankings this week. This is good as Henman and Roddick both need to lose asap, and this match-up will ensure that at least one of them is gone by round 2. Having said that, Roddick is far and away the men's favourite... which to be honest is the only reason I have to NOT pick him to win.

If Jennifer Fatriati v wunderkind Maria Sharapova in round 3 comes off, that will be very interesting, especially given JenFat's injury/form issues.

The beautiful Anastasia Myskina has a dream draw to the quarters, but form and headcase tendencies are decreeing otherwise.

Not, of course, that any of this matters as I have an internship for the whole fortnight and will be stuck in a hotel with no Eurosport access GRAR.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 21 August 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad Safin withdrew AGAIN. He's so hot.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 22 August 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes, ATP site still has Henman as #33 and Chela as #34, but no indication as to how they've split them (they both have 1020 pts); I presume it goes on your 19th best result and as Henman has only played 19 events in the last 52 weeks...

US Open site yet to update their draw to reflect Safin's withdrawal.

I suspect this isn't yet Roddick's time; those players on a hot streak through the North American hardcourt season don't usually sustain it through to the end - think of McEnroe in '85, Gilbert in '88, Agassi in '95.

The Anastasia Fantasia may jam in the projector long before the quarters, I agree; everyone seems to coo over the Russians, generously failing to mention that they keeping stalling in the second week of the slams. I hope Sharapova (from the Bloc) is the one to break through, ousting Jenny (from the...).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 22 August 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Russian stalling thing = partly because they're mostly headcases (grand tradition stemming back to Kournikova, latest manifestation Vera Zvonareva losing to Anna Pistolesi the other day after being 6-0 5-1 30-0 up), partly because they're mostly too inexperienced to be genuine Slam contenders just yet. Though Petrova and Zvonareva did them proud at Roland Garros.

Hmm, the Rafter '98 hot streak sustained him into the US Open pretty well, and everyone not named Roddick is in such patchy form at the moment. He may not have much competition.

The US Open site hasn't acknowledged that Canas has pulled out either... useless.

There is a British woman in the last round of qualifying! And a British man! 'Tis miraculous. I've interviewed Anne Keothavong, actually, she's a lovely girl. Says her dream in life is to see Coldplay live (her eyes went all misty!), which I thought was really really sweet.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 22 August 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally support tennis players depending on their music taste. Leander Paes is a big fan of Les Savy Fav, while Anna Smashnova's passion for Andrew WK gets me all aroused.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 22 August 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Tennis players and good music taste -> Maggie Maleeva, Natasha Zvereva and Venus Williams to thread but Justine H-H, Martina Hingis and Serena Williams emphatically not to thread. MM likes Bjork and Pulp and ADF, the Z-woman is passionate about Led Zep, Vee is into Hole and the Jackson Five. Oh yeah, and Tatiana Panova was once sighted wearing a PJ Harvey t-shirt.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 22 August 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yes, you're right about Rafter in 1998 - Toronto, Cincinnati, New Haven and then on to Flush Poop.

I obviously don't follow tennis as closely as I like to imagine (I like to imagine I follow it with a scanning electron microscope) - I'm oblivious to the pop passions of our heroes and heroines. Well, I know a bit *too* much about McEnroe's tastes. I reckon Roger Federer chills out with a bit of Fennesz.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 22 August 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I read that the Fed is actually an AC/DC fan.

So, wow. Venus is out and no one seems entirely sure what the draw will look like now, but signs point towards Kata Robotnik being moved into Venus' spot to make life hella easier for JenFat. Justine officially = my women's pick now.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I wrote a lovely/ugly little vignette about Yulia Beygelzimer and Tian Tian Sun being the qualifiers to cheer for now Our Brave Boy And Girl had flopped in the last quallin' round; about how their favourite bands were The Archies and Melt Banana, how they'd been penpals since the age of 11, Yulia overcoming her initial misgivings about Tian's fondness for green ink... But my flaky dial-up gave out on me Sunday night and swallowed the whole thing.

Now the event's underway and I must clear my mental throat and...

Anyone see Pistol(Super)WhipPete's G'bye? Were there tears? Vomiting?

Staggered to see Chandralier drop out; leaves the way clear for Thresher, if she can handle the Presher, to make the last eight. No such future for NoRout. Amelie, Lindsay, Kim all impressive.

Greg's pram/toys incident vs Roddick looking more and more like the final maddened act of a fading talent - Rusedd out to a Frenchman ranked 100 who's never been higher than... 100. Ferrero, Hewitt (remember him?), Martin and Fish ease through.

The Handy Andy - Grim Tim showdown is the second of the night session matches on Arthur Ashe Court, which means it'll kick off around 1:30am Wednesday for BSTers. Maybe I'll dream the result.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations Leyts on winning, and surpassing in one match your mighty deeds of Wimbledon.

Pete, it's true, most of the time you were as boring as batshit, but by God we're going to miss you. And in a sporting world of flakeheads like the aforementioned L.H., and the never-ending saga/farce of the supremely appalling Mr Warne, and the spoilt show-pony acts of Jon 'Bulldust' Drummond, a bit of boring excellence with occasional, REAL passion suits me just fine.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Chang retires too, with less fuss but a bit more perspiration - 6-4 in the 4th vs Gonzalez. Sharapova stomping on Ruano Pascual and Big Ivo (coming through the quallies again) is about to give the big 'eave-o to 21st seed Mantilla. Malisse winning over titchy compat Olivier 'BA Bar' Rochus, two sets and a break.

Jen vs Torrens underway, which means Henmang/Rodrick only an hour or so away. Wake me when it's over.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There was no joy for the Polite Chipcharger - ramrodded in three by Lager Shandy. Gustavo was pipped in the fifth by some shady Muscovite ruining my soft furnishing dream of a semi-final: Kuerten-Draper.

Day 3's highlight surely Zabaleta-Blake, though I'll be intrigued to see how Silver Spring's compact and bijou Alex Kim copes with El Anayoui.

It's slightly depressing going through the player's biogs looking at the ones I know are around my age - Patricia Tarabini, Jeff Tarango, etc - and seeing how long ago they peaked as singles players (10-15 years). I didn't have a peak, I just had bumps in the noisefloor.

Wayne Arthurs allegedly lives in 'Middlesex, England'. Someone needs to buy him a new map.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you'll find Jeff Tarango piqued.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Chandra (Levy) has only just returned from injury, and Maria Vod-Ka is a great player when she's on. She was the first player I ever saw live... *reminisces*

Damn, I was hoping Chicken-Legs would beat (Rod)dickhead... at least he'd be sure of going out in the next round. I suppose Dickhead will take the title now. Sigh.

It must be very depressing to be Patricia Tarabini's age. It's depressing enough to realise that the teen phenoms are no longer the same age as you - good lord, Sharapova the Queen of Scream is nearly five years my junior.

Bovina the Definitely Not Bovine contrived to lose to one Ludmila Cervanova yesterday. But then Cervanova presumably had the advantage of merely having to repeat her own name to remember her serving technique...

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark and Lex are on fire.

It must be very depressing to be Patricia Tarabini's age.

Hey! She's a day older than me. Which makes PT precisely the same age as Gillian Anderson. I've served less double faults in my life than the former (by two) but fallen down as many stairs as the latter.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Tarabini looks (much) older than she is, which may or may not be a comfort to you. Wasn't she shagging Cowchita Mootinez at one point?

PT + Gillian Anderson in same sentence makes me think of PT Anderson, which is, well, very different to either original lady.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh Tammy T has sent Pattycakes Schnyder and her dodgy boyfriend on their way to the tune of 6-4 6-3. And Mauresmo's done nothing to persuade me that she won't beat the Clijsters Choker in the quarters... 6-2 6-2 over Stéphanie Cohen-Aloro. That name is too long... I'm taking a leaf out of the J-Lo book and calling her S-Coal from now on.

El Aynooeyooeyooeyooey a set and 6-6 up against the Kim who isn't Clijsters... would've thought it would be easier. Alex Kim is rubbish and doesn't deserve to share my name.

Looking at the bios, I find that Dickhead is exactly the same age as me. To the day. Gah.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaand the other Russian teenager by the name of Maria - Ms Kirilenko - has just come back to take the second set 7-6 against Anchor Barner. Another uber-talented Russian phenomenon? Of course!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you safe, Ms. Kirilenkoooooo...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Daydreamy Rog has let the first set (and a break) swim away from him vs Acasuso. He better wake up.

Tipsarevic (who eliminated Arvind Parmar in the last round of the qualies - a man who can sleep easy at night safe in the knowledge that he will never again carry the burden of a nation's hopes) offered no obstruction to Poopsizzle and Enqvist destroyed Portas with such ease it would suggest that putting former top-fiver Thommy E through the indignity of the qualifying event just made him MAD.

I see Rog has broken back. Now flick the genius switch.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I so need a translation gizmo for Lex and Mike's posts.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god Mootinez lost to Molik yesterday. Which means... that one of Molik, Suarez, Zuluaga and Likhovtseva will be in the QFs, hopefully the winner of Fabulous Fabiola Z and Li-HOT-seva.

I don't know which is more shocking - that Lisa "not a doubles specialist" Raymond lost to Melinda Czink, 20, Hungarian, barely in the top 100, or that Big Lindsay's foot held steady through another match.

No comment on men's tennis except to say that despite the silly name, Mardy Fish = HOT.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this the big one for Blakey? I've never heard quite such a rumble of purring punditry about the routine first round elimination of a low seed by a fairly established player for yonks - people seem to think JB has finally sprung the padlock on his talent. Hellish draw though, so a first GS qf would be a spectacular achievement (Sargsian, Federer, Nalbandy/Scudetto in the way).

Moya the next top tenner to fall, I reckon. Wesley (mean, Moodie and munificent) awaits in the round of sixty-four.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's Yank desperation for someone other than Dickhead to be Slam champion material, all in vain it must be said. Blake the Flake is the male Kournikova: hugely talented in terms of what he can do with the ball (as it were), not especially physically imposing compared with the competition, prone to brain cramps, still hasn't won a title. I don't doubt he can beat the Fed, who seems to have gone mentally walkabout again, though the less-talented but mentally-stronger Fish and Ginepri are both better QF bets.

Ha! After the sisters Williams retire the Americans will have no one! (Except Roddick.) And half the top 30 will be Russian! Ha!

Agree re: Moya. Surprised he managed to beat the Tinker Tailor Draper Soldier in round one to be honest.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, andf the most obvious Blake/Kournikova comparison - both HOT, both MODELS.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Kournikova is the blandest woman on the planet. There is NOTHING to her face, nothing. I find her repugnant. I am glad she's a failure.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to love Anna K... lost interest a few years ago. She looks like Boris Yeltsin.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Srichaphan through comfortably vs Dominik the Dominator - in a fit of madness, I predicted he'd make the final. I may yet be right. Lleyton 'Potato' Hewitt managed to lose a set to Hyung-Taik Lee, lord only knows how.

Meanwhile, Marat's lil sis Dinara is keeping the Safin(a) family honour intact - she's into the third round for her best ever Slam result, a convincing win over Cervanintothenet. Dokic Dumbchick vs Pierce the water buffalo lookalike is into a final set while - good god I never saw THIS one coming - 32nd seed Marie-Gaiané Mikaelian (MGM) has crashed in straight sets to Sweet'n'Saori Obata...

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hewitt seems to be sorting himself out after first set bizarreness vs Lee, but Dokic-Pierce looks like going all the way to penalties, Brian. Chela on the way to justifying his (late) seeding by reaching the last, er... 33?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blake won the Waikoloa Challenger against Verkerk in 2002, so he's up on Kournikova.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

He also beat Paradorn Srichaphan at a tournament in DC last year.

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/playeractivity/default.asp?year=2002&player=B676&x=11&y=8

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Kournikova's won a couple of Challengers herself... three, I believe. So she's up on Blake. As it were. (xpost the DC tournament had completely slipped my mind. Damn.)

Pierce comes back from 1-4 down in the third to squeak the tiebreak, while Safina will be playing Claudine Cloak'n'Schaul, who seems to be taking over where Anne Kremer left off as Best And Indeed Only Luxembourgian Tennis Player, for a place in the last 16...

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixed fortunes for the (Alllll night) Young Americans - Ginepri whacked Ferreira for the right to play (Owwwwww 'eck) Old American Doddery Todd M; Fish was [battered/filleted/deboned/hooked/fried/drowned/broiled/baked/steamed/smoked/grilled/slapped against a rock] by Kristmas Karol.

Top half of men's third round looks a bit tasty, as the Pinefox would say, if he were here. Carraz not the bit-part heavy in an Alain Delon movie I first thought, overturning Inclement from two sets adrift to set up showdown with Coria, who's fizzing again.

A Candice Breitz installation immediately below that - Double Juan, along with Dentyne (who's fast) trying to chase down Gonzalez (who's just speedy) and a repeat of the '99 semi between Yevgeny (the guy who kept turning up for work after they pensioned him off) and Andre (who'll never be made redundant).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 29 August 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Mike.

Hmmm, so our old mate from Wimbers, James 'Sexton' Blake, looks like he's headin' somewhere?

Blake failed to find Jerusalem in Wimbledon's green and pleasant land. But he's having better luck in the dark satanic mills Formerly Known As Flushing Meadow.

One random observation, and one random non-observation, from the womens' singles:

1) That Best And Only Luxembourgean Tennis Player you alluded to earlier isn't ranked 208, by any chance (I think she may have played herself in an epic semi-final at the 1980 Hollywood Open, but I'm really dustin' off the oldies now...)

2) The absence of Anna the Hologram from this year's guest list completely passed my notice.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't quite believe that Fish sunk like that... ah well, one less American man is never a bad thing. Go Yevgeny!

I can't remember, but it's entirely possible that Anne Kremer is rankled 208... she's been injured all year. She nearly beat Hingis in the first round of Wimbledon one year, though that's hardly an uncommon feat.

Anna K is apparently doing some sort of broadcasting TV coverage thing. 'Not live', we are assured.

Lindsay D and Nadia P are both a set up on Czink and Coetzer respectively... neither has lost a game yet. It's a race to the double bagel finish line! (If there's food at the finishing line, I suspect Lindsay will be extra motivated.)

And Dave Nalbandyandyan is a set down to Jark the Shark!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Markie Oussis through in three, Xavier in five, Bandy a sliver ahead in the 5th set t/b vs Jarkko (we may have a winner before I hit submit), Blakey two sets to one up vs Mr Exotica. But Sjengy having a nightmare...

Bandy three points away and as...I...hit...submit ...(two points)...

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Just*n G*melstob must have lost since I waited on him and his mixed doubles partner tonight, and he was severely pissed off and stormed off right as they were ordering dinner.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 30 August 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Gimelst*b out of all three events in the first round, the mixed exit being at the hands of YoungWood and VickiWine. So he gets a week off work, what a baby!

Raining in NYC - Bjorkman-Kucera halted in the midst of a rally at match point at 5-4 in the 5th to Jonas (I think one of them fell over). I'm not sure I've ever heard of such a thing happening before (the match point suspension and the "play two, it's getting slippy" ruling). Bizarre.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 30 August 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

he's really tall....

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 30 August 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bjorkman skidded/slid/nearly fell over on consecutive returns at first one and then the other end of the baseline. Match point rally interrupted just as it began to pour, which the commentators say is allowed by the rules and the mark of a good official, though the crowd didn't like it.

(hasn't JG always been a baby?)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 30 August 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Big Ouzo falls to Nalbandian (Bandy and choke?) leaving the Leyt who Greyts carrying the Oz flag alone.

With each passing major, Nailbags is looking less and less like the oncer We All Knew He Was at Wimbers 2002. Back then it was said Leyton was lucky he was playing such a nobody in a GS final. Now you could say he was lucky to catch him still raw and overawed.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite agree, Fred. I've grown to really like old Peachfuzz - hence my guilty joy at his scrambling attempts to unseat Lord Timothy at Wimb. Nobody whispers "Chris Lewis!" and sniggers when he wanders through a departure lounge any more. He has more than a chance against Federer too (Blakey was left stalled in the bus depot last night) - he beat him on hardcourt a few weeks ago, right?

I think the Oz flag might be all rolled up and soaked in spicy coconut come Tuesday night. We've all underestimated Moya again - after his cliffhangers at Roland Garros, he's motoring through this. I think he'll beat t/b-edger Younesco in four.

The Sch-Sch Schowdown is anybody's - Rainer is another, like Bandy, who isn't supposed to be this consistent, and SchalkDust showed limestone resolve in his R2 recovery and R3 Ivo barrage. Roddick obviously in fine form but Malisse and then the winner of SchuSchuSchudio? He could be spent by the time the Artist Currently Known As Roger rolls round.

Dent seems like the sort of young thumper Ags eats for breakfast, Coria more of a danger in the quarters. Todd-JCF all the way to a 12-10 tie-breaker in the 5th - tears and Elastoplast.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha. I had the second best birthday ever, Roddick found out that everyone in the locker room hates him because he is a dickhead on his. Ha.

You're right about the Bandy Andean and the two Schs not being meant to be this consistent, though to be fair Dave was tipped as a prospect some years before that Wimbledon run, just not that much of a prospect on that surface. I quite like him too - and as for his chances vs the Fed, I believe that the Fed has never beaten him in something like five tries. He's got to like his chances.

Poor Tammy T... her compatriot Srichaphan gets the mad red-shirted Srichafans cheering his every move, but even when she makes noise of her own they fail to show up for her. SEXISM!!!!! Anyway, yeah, she lost. And Srichaphan will beat Llittle Lleyton, who is llittle more than a llatter-day Jim Courier. If he's llucky.

Five Russians in the last 16, and they're doing their customary flame-out at this stage... horribly depressing. Two down yesterday, three to go today. Though on balance I am ecstatic that Myskina made it this far in the first place, and Dementieva has a very good chance against JenFat.

Predictions, then back to work. Agassi v Coria, Martin v Srichaphan, Schuttler v Roddick, El Aynaoui v Federer, then Agassi v Srichaphan and Roddick v Federer, then Srichaphan v Roddick, Roddick to win. There will be no upsets in the women's event from here on in, with the exception of Mauresmo beating Clijsters and Davenport to make the final.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I've never understood what people like about Roddick. I've been waiting for Dent to go places for more than 2 years, and I don't think he's going further here, but his injury-induced training appears to have brought out the possibilities in his game beyond his serve.

Blake-Federer's hour-plus Set 2 was pretty great. Blake wore himself out tho.

I have tix for tonight and it looks like I'll have to wait until next year. :(

TV is showing the 86 Steffi-Martina semi - remember when the women were exciting?

JenFat

hey, she's just being trendy

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dent and Capriati are warming up together right now. Why is that cute?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 1 September 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

After traveling on the 7 with many Thai fans, I got to see two points of Sugiyama-Schiavone before the night rain delay, and then left when the rain was still falling and my tickets had become safe from pumpkinizing. When my friend pointed out McEnroe on the train home, I think the guy he was referring to was just a much younger lookalike. I think. Now I get home and my friend calls me and tells me they started playing again. Arg.

I had forgotten that Mary Pierce is the most beautiful woman in the world.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I had forgotten that Mary Pierce is the most beautiful woman in the world

B-but, her opponent! Nervous of nudging this thread down a path it absolutely should not go, did anyone see the women's high jump at the World Athletics Championships? Kuptsova! Vlasic! All these ravishing beauties from the East - where were they all in the 80s when Marita Koch and Jarmila Kratochvilova were winning everything?

The forecast for the next three days in NYC looks terrible. What's gonna happen?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary Pierce was beautiful back in the day (the little black dress!), but the last time I saw her - the Roland Garros/Wimbledon swing - her build resembled that of a water buffalo. I assume she's lost weight since, as she could barely run back then... it was more a sort of waddle. Anastasia 'Nastya' Myskina, on the other hand... she is my favourite player and the most beautiful woman on tour. Ravishingly elegant and so graceful. And the last Keeper of Russian Honour!

Hmm. Remember when all the pretty girls came from the West and the Eastern Europeans were all steroid trolls? When did the flip occur?

People like Dickhead because Yanks like brashness... it's just ugh. I am schizo-ambivalent about him... I never cheer for him, and think he looks like either a rat/retard most of the time, but in certain photo shoots it's just, like, FWOOARR. Which is confusing. Dent, on the other hand, is just an ugly meathead whose limited game makes Ivanisevic look like Federer.

I've seen JenFat warm up with her brother a few times... gaydar alert! gaydar alert!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Was ILX left out in a bucket in Queens? I mean, the coincidence...

And yet - after the drizzle, so much actual, living, breathing tennis in the last few hours I can hardly take it all in.

Myskina - through, Sugiyama - out, after waiting for *weeks* to grab the four points she needed for victory.

Bandy pulls the old arch-nemesis stunt *again* vs error-filled Rog, through in four - as is Coria, Hewitt. Martin heroics vs Ferrero, but not enough, JC through 6-3 in the 5th. Still out there, but nearing the finishing line: El Anayoui and Schalken, both 2-1 and a break to the good vs Moya and Schuettler resp.

It doesn't stop there... women's qf underway (God, the organisers are lucky sods), KimC 6-1 1-2 vs Amelie, Davva 3-1 Suarez. Myskina-Henin has vanished from the schedules: tomorrow? Capri Arty still to play Scheer Voney.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jen and Hen moved on to the semis tonight. Impulsively, I bought a Sat night ticket today, forgetting about the schedule and then hoping for rain and TV to change it, but now it looks like I gambled wrong.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 5 September 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I was watching some of the Bandy-Rog match last night and it was fantastic stuff. Rog was missing some absolute sitters though at one point.

chris (chris), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

''B-but, her opponent! Nervous of nudging this thread down a path it absolutely should not go, did anyone see the women's high jump at the World Athletics Championships? Kuptsova! Vlasic! All these ravishing beauties from the East - where were they all in the 80s when Marita Koch and Jarmila Kratochvilova were winning everything?''

haha well unfortunately I have no fucking cable so I can't comment on the US open but the world athletics was 'interesting'. I love watching races and so on but the 'highlights' were def the women's pole vault and high jump.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anastasia made it to her second Slam QF :) That's all I ever wanted out of this tournament, so I'm happy.

Justine-Jen should be good... unfortunately, I still won't be able to see it. I want it to rain non-stop in New York until I get home on Sunday.

(Incidentally... wtf is the US Open's incompetence all about? Staff have to go around mopping up rain water with TOWELS?! Go out and buy a couple of £50 tarpaulins, for fuck's sake! Even Wimbledon manages to have court covers to keep the rain off. And notice the big scheduling conspiracy of getting Agassi and Roddick through to the QFs first, thus giving them an extra day of rest over their competitors...)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 5 September 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the whole thing stinks (was Dent slipped a tenner to retire before the rains came again on Tuesday?) - let's hope for a Coria-Schalken (or Younes) final. I think Sugiyama should sue.

The line on court covers was that "it would only save us a few minutes each time", meanwhile the hot air dryer sprung an oil leak earlier in the week, coating the Grandstand court and putting it out of action. The thing is, thanks to the unexpectedly prolonged dry spell yesterday, they're going to get away with it. Forecast for today, tomorrow and Sunday is clearing cloud, dry and high 70s. The singles events will finish on time.

I think it might be the Clidge and the Cap to advance tonight.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 5 September 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed, and I thought the Dent thing was fishy too. Pity it wasn't Fish who did it... then we could really get the puns going. Overall, though, it really put a dent in the USTA's credibility... (that was so lame).

Poor Ai... and after that comeback, Skier Voney was never going to have anything left vs the Capster. I'm still proud of Nastya though - a rare case of Russian's Nerves Hold Steady.

My predictions are already shot to pieces, but I'm going with the Clidge and the Hen.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish those Europeans would stop whining. SOMEBODY had to get that extra day off, so might as well put the two players that fans wanted to see on the court. Like don't they realize where their big paychecks come from? Sponsors. And how do you keep the sponsors happy? By putting Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick on national TV instead of some whining Spanish dude and some random Russian guy.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 5 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And I hope Justine Henin doesn't win. Cheater.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 5 September 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Davenport's cute.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 5 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

do you also fancy amelie mauresmo?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 5 September 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I do.

JC-Younes/Bandy brulee final still possible.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 5 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But Mauresmo is, like, French.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 5 September 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

exactement

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 5 September 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Younes el-Baradei, as my Mom said, is gone.

Capriati's momentum isn't enough in the face of a clearly superior game and in spite of obvious pain on Justine's side. Grete Weitz wins the marathon. Will there be moules frites tomorrow night?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 6 September 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

''I think Davenport's cute.''

?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

By putting Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick on national TV instead of some whining Spanish dude and some random Russian guy.

Quite right, Phil. In fact, I don't really know why they continue with this anachronistic 'tournament' at all - just have a $10 million shooutout between Agassi and Roddick on a star-spangled court - say, who can win the most points in 40 minutes, and at the end the winner is showered with diamonds and the loser falls through a trap door into the bowels of hell.

Meanwhile... the Cap-Hen match sounded amazing. Justine can't have much left now. I went to bed at 4am BST and it was one set all then, so they must have gone into the small hours local time.

Coria and Sjeng both sent packing with alarming ease. So, it's Bandy or bust.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 6 September 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There was an urban myth around when I was in high school that 'cute' meant 'ugly in an interesting way'.

While Linz is obviously not the stunt double for Furillo's namesake main squeeze on the late, very much lamented 'Hill Street Blues', she does seem to have a personality that is kinda interesting an account of the fact that the 'Handling The Media 101' air-brush marks aren't quite so bloody obvious.

Oz woke, not quite in tears, to the news that Hewitt had gone down, to some bloke our media still call 'John Clod'. He claimed a sore hip. Which meant his hip was not hip to the beat and he was subsequently beaten. We don't think it was the hip on his shoulder THIS time.

Still, the future Mrs H (who could very easily be HIS stunt double) marches on.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 6 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha!Ha! That's exactly what I was hinting at, actually.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 6 September 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Roddick down 2 sets and staring match point in the face in the 3rd set tiebreaker, comes back to win the match.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Davenport's got such a big, athletic frame, and I can't really explain, though 'ugly in an interesting way' is as close to the truth as possible I suppose.

Sometimes it seems, though, that I'm the only guy here who wants to be womanhandled by strong chicks.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 6 September 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

NO YOU ARE NOT (Serena cll me baby the wife will understand)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 7 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

As I've noted on various other threads, Venus can throw me around the room anytime she wants...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 7 September 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the only guy here who wants to be womanhandled by strong chicks.

er?

JHH played more beautiful tennis tonight. I couldn't believe the crowd - they were like 'we've been ripped off because there are no Americans here' (one dude even yells out "Serena" during the winners' ceremony) and they clapped more for Kim even though J was playing better (Clijsters did play well) on fewer resources (though electrolyte replacement can do wonders, I suppose). I also got to see a few points of Vilas in the Senior Doubles and ate too many pupusas in Woodside post-match.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 7 September 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hey didn't you read my post abt the world athletics championships.

Davenport is alright but you know: williams sisters, henin and clijsters hello hello!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 7 September 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

and they clapped more for Kim even though J was playing better

maybe they're still bitter about that JHH French Open not-ready-hand-signal-serena-half-served-into-the-net-then-not-owning-up-to-the-judge-about-it-thing.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 7 September 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

and they just forgot about Kim's bf's do w/ James Blake 2(?) yrs ago?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 7 September 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

but that was TWO years ago. and thats two degrees of seperation, as well.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 7 September 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, well, what a night. I even got to see some of it (Justine's purple surge to the line from 4-5 15/40). Supposedly she didn't take an injury timeout during the Capriepic because she feared she'd attract criticism. However cramping = loss of condition, which isn't allowed to be treated, right? You look after your own hydration issues, etc. She looked in pretty good nick to me. That drive volley to seal it - so sweet.

We were a point away from a ratings apocalypse - Ferrero-Bandy final and the USTA would be operating from a pre-fab shed this time next year. Bandy now = Roscoe Tanner (don't lend him a tenner) - unexpected Wimb final followed by giant-killing Flushing run and agonising semi defeat from m-p up. Which makes (Gr)And(Slam)y Vitas G and JC Mac '79. My spies tell me the Bandy-Nooey qf was a classic.

Prediction time: Ferrero in four.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 7 September 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad, maybe next year.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 7 September 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

TRUCKER HAT!

Aaron A., Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

YEAH! HAHAHA

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant 'hours', obviously.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no way they're so gonna let Roddick win this.

hstencil, Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

tennis players are such primadonnas.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 7 September 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, way to cry there.

hstencil, Sunday, 7 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Grand Slam, another one-sided men's final. It didn't seem (I'm going on radio commentary and web reports here) that Ferrero had learned anything from Bandy's near-thing last night - the slugging game is not one to try on Anita; mix it up, pull him in, take the pace off, make him think.

But then I didn't see it. Whadda I know.

Maybe KimC is Ivan Lendl with superior dental work. Y'know, haul of tour titles, #1 on the computer, keeps losing GS finals. If so, look out in 2005/6...

See y'all in Melbourne. G'night.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 7 September 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. Still dreaming of a Ferrero/Nalbandian final to spite the USTA... ah well, as Sampras retires Roddick replaces him so easily as the player I always cheer against.

Do US Open crowds ever, ever shut up?

Melbourne? Melbourne? The Tour moves on, you know... to, er, Bali this week for the girls and I believe Bucharest and somewhere in Brazil for the boys.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 8 September 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes, but we only seem to have GS threads in here. Start a general APT/WTA tour thread by all means.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that the charm of the US Open? The high school varsity football game atmosphere? Each player should bring his own team of cheerleaders. That would be fun.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Safin plays in Melbourne next year....

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Do US Open crowds ever, ever shut up?

Do French Open crowds ever shut up?

The crowd was notably quiet during the womens' final. (But they booed when the event thanked the support of Mayors Bloomberg, Dinkins and Koch. The absentee has always hated the event because Flushing Meadows was Dinkins' baby and G never got any credit for it. Also, I was at the Agassi-Sampras quarter 2 yrs ago, and pre-match the crowd cheered when various celebs were shown on the monitor - Brokaw together w/ Mike Wallace, e.g. - but booed when the camera showed Trump, who waved back. During the womens' final this year they showed I think Cameron Diaz and J-Lo, not together).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I would rescind my recent J.Lo hate if she was on the US Open Trinitron soul-kissing Cameron Diaz.
