No one told me you had to update the firmware before sticking in a 4X disc! How could just putting in a disc fuck the thing up anyway? ARRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This has to happen a week before our big DVD-selling fundraiser. Has to. Fuck. Fuck. Anyone got any advice for me here?

Dada, Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that's about right

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Superdrive firmware update was sent out via Software Update a long time ago. Unfortunately the only option you have at this point is to haul your computer into the shop.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 21 August 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And I did. Thing is my Mac isn't hooked up to the Net, so I don't get that stuff. Stupid stupid me, stupid stupid Mac.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard of this happening before, Chris? And being successfully repaired? At least I'm still under Applecare.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The best part is the guy at the store said, "We'll get back to you in 24 hours, so, Monday morning."

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You're the first person I know who's done this. From what I understand it requires a drive swap.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean like a whole new drive? ARGLE BARGLE

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

haha is that 24 business hours or what? fucko.

Reading the title of this thread again I couldn't help but realize that we actually do live in that ridiculous sci-fi future world we used to read about, where people actually SAY things like "I fucked up my Superdrive!" - like if that was a line in a cyberpunk novel or a film we'd all scoff, but here we are! 21st Century and all that and it's all I can do not to imagine Chris and Slutsky having this conversation on a flourescent-lit BBC soundstage in shiny costumes like some Dr. Who episode subplot.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's your rocketpack, Tom?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I fucked up my Rocketpack and am extremely upset

Is that girl reading Ginsburg?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 22 August 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

*bookmarking this thread for future evidence to back my arguments AHEM*

Anyway...

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Arguments about what? My strong resemblance to Jennifer Connolly?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No, about somehow thinking that Macs aren't great. Alas, DB is wrong there. *hides from his wrath*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, he is totally wrong, I fucking hate PCs and can't wait til I no longer have to use them. Alas when I leave my job (which requires me to use the PC) I WON'T HAVE MONEY FOR A MAC. A catch 22.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Student loan!!

Millar (Millar), Friday, 22 August 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, cos I'll have a lot left over after the tuition!

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my PC. I love my PC. I love my PC. I love my PC.

</mantra>

(No, really. This will be true. Once I get a new one, that is. This one is passable. Barely. Which is good for a computer that's seven years old, surely?)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 22 August 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

both PCs and Macs suck.

Macs don't have to deal a digital disease-ridden network. and you have to reboot all the fucking time.

However, PCs usually don't croak and have to be taken to a shop just because you stuck the "wrong" cd in there... (among many other fatal problems Macs can have)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

like how stupid is that!!! I PUT A BLANK DISC IN AND IT BROKE MY COMPUTER AND MY RESOLVE.

drunksky (slutsky), Friday, 22 August 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Before everyone jumps all over Macs again here, bear in mind that this is a problem with certain DVD-R drive mechanisms from Pioneer and Matshita.

Even if you were using Windows you might have to update the drive firmware.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

true true

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone=donut bitch and his irrational hatred of what is good for everyone.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not just the drive, Chris. I've developed software on Macs at work... they are far more buggier than Windows in my experience. Almost every Mac dude I know, except for you and Ned interestingly enough, have had critical problems with their machine at certain points, and required having to take them back to the store, or replace a critically expensive piece of hardware. I'm not lauding PCs for being flawless, of course. Having to race to get the latest security patches is a pain in the butt, of course. But I've never had a critical problem with a PC before, aside from a very old hard drive on its last legs anyway.

Ally, if "irrational hatred" equals "not wanting to wear out my index finger from having to use a fucking one button device for the rest of my life", then i'm the Haty-est Hatah On Da Hatin' Planet ' Hate.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Donut Bitch = my favourite ilxor, ever.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Three buttons for all!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

also, MacIntosh would have been 10x more hated than Microsoft is today, had they freely licensed their operating system two decades ago, which would have secured their position as OS ruler of the world.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

well the good news is the shop called me & they're ordering a new superdrive, all under warranty! yay! though my plans for next weekend are most likely still fuxored.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, DB, but they would be forces of good. ;-) *hides from DB*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavens! System Error. I Must Restart My Machine. ;-)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

We are at perfect peace. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never, ever had a problem with a Mac.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, if "irrational hatred" equals "not wanting to wear out my index finger from having to use a fucking one button device for the rest of my life", then i'm the Haty-est Hatah On Da Hatin' Planet ' Hate.

So buy a different mouse then. I'm using a five button one with a scroll wheel on it.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I was thinking that too, it took me about five minutes to figure out what he meant because my Power PC was outfitted with a three button mouse.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, godfuckingdammit, how come all my Mac friends don't have these zesty zippy multi-button mouses then? Clearly, Chris and Ally, you must school them or deport them back to Bitch School.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, you're mean, DB.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw naught to worry Ned, you've been honorarily enrolled in Chivalric Floozy School, so you're safe.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I like how defensive db is for like no apparent reason about all this, were your parents killed by a Mac?

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I said both suck, but then you called me a hatah. Aw shit, you don't play like dat wit me, foo.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Saying that you have irrational hatred of inanimate objects is hardly akin to that whole Bitch School rant!

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

DB cannot make his face into a heart! An apple fritter, perhaps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Microsoft has been dumping mind-control drugs in Seattle water supply.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

?? I thought I was obviously being facetious

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha DB you are doing your hstencil impression?

Anyway, seriously, this is my Mac thing right here, reposting from the 1001 trax to dl b4 u dye thread:

OMG when I was like 15 I found this thing for my Mac that every time I hit the trash, Oscar the Grouch would appear out of it and sing "I love it because it's traaaaash!" Obv. this resulted in me throwing out documents nonstop.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, if that would happen IRL I'd clean my house a lot more often.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Microsoft has been dumping mind-control drugs in Seattle water supply.

....AGAIN!

Chris, don't make me get all Custos all up on yo thong

(OK, honestly, I really don't have a strong opinion on either platform, though I prefer PCs only because I know them better and they're slightly cheaper, and that's it. but it's been a while since we had a silly PC/Mac throwdown, and i'm in a silly mood today operating after a lack of sleep this week. but i'm happy to know that Macs actually do have multi-button mice, as i seriously wouldn't know that having used all my friends' Macs the past number of years)

haha DB you are doing your hstencil impression?

?? elaborate?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Bitch School = Spinal Tap song = never used seriously by me in any argument

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No!

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Make me!

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

An Omelette!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I'm not so crazy about eggs, can you make me a pie?

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 22 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
I have a Mac and I use a six button mouse. so there.

p.s. OS X.3 is the sexiest, most flawless GUI I have ever encountered (if you have a dual processor and plenty of RAM that is).

PVC (peeveecee), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

wow I waited almost a whole year to post to this thread.
