Ack! He was too prolific!

Which recordings of which operas are best?

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(Starting this on ILE only because ILM has been fairly slow in responding to classical music threads.)

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabucco, Aida

Va Pensiero, greatest opera chorus, ever.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 21 August 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like La Traviata. A lot.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 22 August 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy: The Force Of Destiny, because of all those bloody annoying Stella Artois adverts.

(I know it's not an opera, but it needs to be destroyed anyway)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 22 August 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Requiem pretty damn amazing too.

Ed (dali), Friday, 22 August 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yes the requiem, it goes beyond the mozart one.

Aida is fucking mind-blowing.

I don't have a recording of it... I saw it performed in a crumbling coliseum in Verona as the sunset, and I can't imagine any recording matching that.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 February 2012 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

i'm a total opera philistine but the combatting ranges, the dialogical interaction between voices is just extremely exquisite to listen to

Thought about going on Friday but couldn't do it. Big fan of Dmitri Hvorostovsky

AINT ET ENNE (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

I did a production of Ernani! Was mad fun.

Were either of Dmitri Hvorostovsky or Sondra Radvanovsky in it?

Chicago Lyric Opera is doing Aida this season, and I'm dying to go. I can't think of anyone that I want to spent an extra $90-$160 on to go with me, and I can't think of anyone who would pay that themselves to go with me. Is it gauche or sad to go to the opera alone?

Interesting timing on this thread revive, though. I listened to all of Rigoletto yesterday afternoon, a remaster with Maria Callas as Gilda. I listened to her "Gualtier Malde" number three times before moving on.

Ack! He was too prolific!

We wrote a lot of operas, yes, but they're digestible in a sitting at least. I took on Wagner's Tristan and Isolde last week (I believe a recording with Kirsten Flagstad as Isolde), and at the risk of sounding like a rube and a novice, it's so... freaking... long.

Were either of Dmitri Hvorostovsky or Sondra Radvanovsky in it?

Nope. Barbara Quintilliani, Eduardo Villa, Young-Bok Kim and Jason Stearns.

Who's the baritone?

Do You Like POLL Music? (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Gobbi. I have the Callas studio version with the Orchestra & Chorus from La Scala under Antonino Votto.

Couldn't make it in person today so listening to the live broadcast of today's performance of that opera at the Met. Really a stellar cast.

To perish! so pure and lovely!
To die, thine own self dooming,
In all thy beauty blooming,
Fade thus forever!
Thou whom the heav'n only for love created
But to destroy thee was my love then fated!
Ah no! those eyes
So dear I prize
For death are too lovely!

god, the fucking ending

amonasro was a total dick
