yeah these books are legendary. read them when i was quite wee, didnt really understand them, but there was a curious peacefulness to the prose that i later found in lots of other italian literature. they are a family thing i guess, anyone in my family who refers to don camillo is met with immediate blank faces from 'outsiders'. need to read them again actually. how many were written?

The radio interpretation (BBC R4) is fantastic. No attempts at Italian accent, Peppone, and most of the villagers are gruff yorkshire, and the god-don camillo dialogues are so well done.

6 books according to this.

i really enjoyed these as a kid, there is something v. peaceful abt them, the vision of a (dying? mythical?) small town community and the abiding belief in and humorous depiction of people's small character flaws.

the only copt that still seems to be floating around the house is Comrade Don Camillo, i should see if i can find the other ones. before looking at the link thought I'd read 'em all but I'd never heard abt the Flower Children one. One more to check out.

I find it amazing how few people have heard of them, the 2nd hand copy of Don Camillo and the prodigal son which I just bought is the 11th edition. Could it be because 10 of these are in Italian?

I don't think I would like to hear a radio adaption - the narrator is so present it would seem wrong without him.

There was also a not very gd BBC versh of Don Camillo that ran for one series in, I think, the 1980s.

My parents owned the Don C bks in H/C editions from Gollancz, yellow covers and all - being a comic bk freak, I used to love the cartoonish illustrations in them

I think the author was a cartoonist and that he started writing stories when he was in prison during the war (for being an anti-facist political comentator) but can't recall where I read this.
