where do you steal your ideas from

spinning off of the "originality" thread...for all the "creative types" out there...where do you pinch your, um, inspiration from? i don't even mean in a day to day sense, but as a more general influence. or even back when you were a wee thing and were still developing.

I used to be obsessed with monster films when I was a kid. I drew pictures of Frankenstein fighting Dracula.
This would transfer into a liking towards violent video games (MK, Resident Evil). I drew pictures of brutal fatalities I daydreamt.
Next would come angsty anti-pop music while I shook my alienated fist at the cruel world. I stopped drawing and started to make bleak goth-hop muzaky stuff. Finally, I realized I was destined for chronic depression and had to stop with all the macabre stuff. However, I'm starting to steal ideas from ILE/ILM now unfortunately.

I nick all my ideas off of Tom, and he nicks all his ideas off of me.

I nick my bodily smells off of Italian soups. Me and my gazpacho feet.

Mark S steals his best ideas from me. [See Halloween Costume thread]

I used to copy words out of Neil Gaiman comics and hand them in as poetry in high school. I thought I was very original.

I usually grab a colleague, we get a massive piece of paper out and just scribble doodles and words and stuff all over it. Ideas usually come out. My main influences at the mo' are Stanley Donwood, Dilly Gent, Hammer and Tongs, DR, Haruki Murikami, Louise Brooks and Olivier Assyas's Irma Vep. Which is a fantastic film.

I've wholesale lifted my personality from Charo and my mom.

If I'm stuck writing a song I just ask myself 'What would Momus do now?'

Momus, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In 2nd grade (age 7) we were to write one poem a week, so that by the end of the semester we'd have a book of our very own poetry. my folks had gotten me way into shel silverstein at that point so it was obvious what i shd do - why spend all this time coming up with my own lame poesie when somone else had already done it, better and funnier than i ever could? so, triumphantly, at the end of that first week, i volunteered to read "my" poem. the class was stunned. our student teacher, miss price, the woman of my dreams, looked at me as at a god. the next week my parents turned me in and the shame and anger i remember feeling prove that i knew somehow i was doing Wrong - but it felt so right!

Influence is completely subconcious, so I don't really know where I get any of my ideas from. But I can guess it's things like bad movies I've seen, bad comics and books I've read and all sorts of musical output.

Good golly, Momus, do you like to talk about yerself in the third (TURD???) person. ;-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fairy tales! And something else in my brain that makes me think "oh- wait-" at the end of a story and turn around and rewrite until it's pointless.

Maria, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its not stealing if the ideas are mine already, but if a friend reminds me of something I said that was particularly memorable I'll always re-use it.

Ronan, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it doesn't matter where i steal my ideas from, cos whoever i stole them from most likely stole them from someone else anyway!

oh but if you insist, my ideas about politics and philosophy and feminism are ripped from Foucault, Susan Bordo and Judith Butler.

my guitar parts are stolen from bratmobile, sleater-kinney, king loser bass lines, the bass player from my old band, joy division bass lines. thats only the ones i've consciously ripped!

When I was 8 I wasn't allowed to watch Simpsons but at the public library I found "Life in Hell" comic anthologies. From these I took jokes I did not understand and wrote my own comics. I called Bongo "Pip" in my comics, and drew them more poorly than Sr. Groening. That was the only difference really.

In jr. high I lifted from "Migraine Boy." What was I thinking?
