"This is the thread where you look at a news story that screams to be made fun of but you can't because you're too busy hating humanity."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it isn't.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"I told her to stop, told her what could a little kid ever do that was so wrong to beat him like that? She said the church told her it was the only way to heal him."

:(

This is one of the saddest (on so many levels) things I've ever read.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

people in capable of immeasurable cruelty and stupidity shocker.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i have autism, and its only for the grace of god that i got the "good kind", they devolped a system of working with the child, he could have grown with community involvement into a gifted artist who communicated with the world.

jesus gives us power, but that power needs to come with discernment, there are a resaon why so many of his miracles happen thru others hands.

this is an act against god, a hateful act, an act that should be punished through divine wrath.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ARGGGHHHHH FUCK FUCK DIE DIE FUCK FUCK DIE. FUCKERS.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what is divine wrath? is that like witch burning?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Circumstances are suspicious because most 8-year-olds don't just die. Unless there's a medical condition -- which we're unaware of at this time."

Haynes added that the boy "did not die of natural causes."

Dare we say, "Duh?", kids? Sad enough to make cynics cry....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

or a hurricane?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

people suck.

always have, always will.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuckin' barbaric.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, man, plague of locusts.

hstencil, Monday, 25 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

at least this is being reported. I have strong suspiscions that this sort of thing happens far too frequently and is just sort of hushed over.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 25 August 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I get the sense that this is being reported because the people in the town hate this particular church.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(This whole thing freaks me out worse cuz we just found out my little L-dawg might be a li'l bit autistic...)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

As some deeply insightful person said, "Lord, please protect me from your followers."

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(best wishes dear nickalicious; no matter what words doctors stick on your child, we know he's loved by a great person and will get all the wonderfulness he deserves!)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious, I'll keep my fingers tightly crossed for your little guy, as well as you. It may not be easy. As long as he knows you love him (as I'm sure you do!), then you can only go from strength to strength....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

We're still not sure; it's just between his slight communication-oriented developmental problems & his propensity for mimicking/repeating things that it seems like it might be as such. One of my very good friends works with autistic children specifically though and thinks that A) he prob'ly doesn't have it, B) if he does it's not a very bad case at all, and C) it's not as hard a thing for the child to deal with as it seems.

And at least ain't nobody trying to beat the demons out of him. *urgh*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 25 August 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

And at least ain't nobody trying to beat the demons out of him. *urgh*

Clearly because mum and dad have a functioning grey cell, and know the difference between love and punishment

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 25 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, best to you & your little guy. My eldest nephew is on the mild end of the autistic spectrum, and he's my favorite person in the family.

As for the thread: these church people probably did sincerely think they were helping; sometimes stubborn ignorance can do much worse things than deliberate evil. People just suck sometimes.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Life = stupid in general. Removers of life = stupider even still.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, anthony, i'm confused. you often seem like one of the posters with the most *moral* sensibility here, along with j0hn. you often criticize certain christians for drifting from or betraying the essentials of jesus's teachings, chief among them being forgiveness. your invoking of "divine wrath" seems out of character.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you think that christ did with the money changers in the temple or the pharisees or satan in the desert ?

he called them out, he refused to accept what they were saying, he routed out injustice, he was wrathful.

what do you do with a man who murders a child over a perverted view of god ?

I cannot call down gods wrath, but as hard as i try, i cannot view this as a merciful act or an act that has been struggled with and not over come.

i view this as prideful and willfull destruction.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

so you wish more destruction in turn?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

its not destruction i wish.
its justice.

fuck in my lizard brain, the brain i never listen to, the brain that is not christian, i want to rip every demon out of him, defining demons as interior organs.

why this guy i dont know.
apologies.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 25 August 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i just have to say this (sorry please don't burn me at the secular stake) but assholes come in all religious varieties, including atheist. i just get tired of the Xtian straw man, as if all Xtians are extreme, idiots, etc. oh yeah and in general from the other (Alabama) thread--stop being classist (i don't remember who, doesn't matter, but in general) I AM THE FACE OF SOUTHERN TRAILER TRASH. So stop generalizing.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Orbit. As with so many groups, it's the idiots and extremists amongst Xtians who show up in the news, so they're the ones who get the attention. Certainly there are a zillion good, kind, intelligent people for every whack job out there.
