People Who Slurp: C/D?

I just rode home on the subway and sitting next to me was a respectable-looking, middle-aged Asian woman who was slurrrrrping - slurrrrping - her yogurt as she ate. When she finished she put the container in her bag and continued to smack her lips every minute or so for the rest of the journey. Does anyone know if in some Asian cultures it is considered normal, or even polite, to consume food audibly?

I remember a lot of spitting and noisy throat clearing from my Asian adventures.

Slurping is the only way to eat ramen noodles. The broth and noodles are usually so hot that the extra inhale as you're sucking them in slightly cools them and I dunno, you're just supposed to slurp.

Uh, I dunno about yogurt though. It's probably just that many Asians have terrible eating habits. Trust me. My father still hasn't learned to chew with his mouth closed.

I've heard from People Who Would Know that slurping is good table manners in Japan (I only know about Japan here) and that if you truly want to show admiration for the dish you're eating and respect for the person who made it, you would slurp it down. The relative of mine who's married to a Japanese woman, and in fact my Japanese relative as well, slurp down everything that has a broth, from soups to menudo, because he learned a long while back that you show you like what you're eating by slurping.

So if you're slurping to follow a Japanese tradition, it's a classic. But slurping just to slurp -- man, get better (Western-centric) table manners, please.

Throwing up is good manners in Belgium. It is as if you say to your host, "The meal was so delicious I would like to eat it up all over again".

When you slurp you take in air with the food which carries millions of food particles up to your smell sensors in your nose thus doubling the taste/smell pleasure. No need to do it with yoghurt, though, especially if it's cold.
