W's True Colors?

I am full-on cringing & wincing, listening to this address Bush is making to the FBI. The rhetoric that sounded so emboldening and heartening a week ago now sounds like the rantings & ravings of a completely ignorant nut looking to establish a police state. All the buzzwords and phrases ("fight all terrorism", "long war", "deportation of possible suspects") seem to belie the calm, considered stance W wants to present. I'm a room away from the television, and I had to fight my urge to just get out of range from his bullheaded rambling.

So.

The real reason I'm starting this thread, though, is just to get this out of my head.

Deportation of suspects? Wouldn't they want them around to keep an eye on them?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Ned, they'll keep the plain old "suspects." It's the "possible suspects," as in "people who could theoretically one day be suspected of having done something," who will be deported. I think my mother should become a citizen before she gets booted.

Great. Well, might as well get rid of all of us, then! *goes and does something, is deported*

Bush's "Good vs. Evil" line is dammed embarassing.

this is normal procedure, some tragedy occurs and "experts" in law enforcement push to try and make their job easier. these are pretty frightening though in effect contracting foregin govts to spy on americans, warrantless search of internet usage, indefinite detention of legal aliens if the govt suspects they are a threat to national security and the govt does not need to present any evidence and the only place one can appeal is washington dc which is kinda tough if you are in los angeles. wiretapping is up 600% in the last ten years but the number of warrants requested for suspected terrorists is tiny instead the new authority is mostly used for drug busts. all the war rhetoric really needs to stop or at least these powers need to be sunset. but of course they will not be. clinton asked for most of the same powers during his presidency.

Law enforcement / intelligence: the more poorly they do their job, the more money and resources they get. This "war on terrorism" will be an endless debacle just like the war on drugs. If we're lucky, we'll get another Miami Vice out of it, but I'm not holding my breath.
