Attempting to invent new taste sensations

When I was a child I invented two special party dishes. The first was "Submarines" - basically strawberry or banana Angel Delight with Kit-Kats broken in half submerged in it. The second was "Boats" (nautical theme emerging, hm) - rectangular lumps of cheese with salt & vinegar crisps broken in half and carefully inserted lengthways into the cheese (these were the "sails"). The former proved quite popular in the house, and I often made them when my mum had time. The latter were a right bugger to eat.

What I want to ask is, have you ever made any new types of meals? I've read the thread on frying cheese, which was v. interesting but I want to know if there have been further experiments within the ILX community with other foodstuffs.

I used to melt cheese slices directly on the tray in a toaster oven, then scrape them off with a fork. I probably have some kind of lead or mercury poisoning at this point.

i like super fruity fruit loops-replace the milk with orange juice. Tangy! Yummy! Lactose Free!

I've added all sorts of things to chili or chicken dishes, but I'm not sure how much that counts.

Vernors ginger ale and chocolate milk (approximately half of each) over ice.

My sushi à l'eau de rose was a bit of a mistake until now but I won't give up on it.
On a happier note: green tea, gotu kola, black currant nectar.

Constant tinkerings with risotto.

That phrase sums up coastaltown matt better than I ever could have imagined :)

Stilton and pickled onions isn't new, is it? I like it though.

I rememeber coming up with prototype ideas for new soda flavors, I think they were like mint-chocolate and stuff like that.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ribena + yoghurt + ?cornflower rolled out into rubbery purple pancakes. (This was a *childhood* experiment, I hasten to add.)

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, soda! I'm always picking things up to make soda. "Cherry juice concentrate. I wonder if that would be good with malted chocolate syrup in a soda. .... no, no it isn't." Ginger and cherry is good, though. Vanilla and cherry is better.

When I was 6-7 I mixed together every condiment in the kitchen. But that was because I was trying to build a robot and needed "brain juice." When I realized that this wouldn't work, I left it in the fridge for a few days and then tried to poison my mom with it just for kicks. But she threw it away.

I used to make scrambled eggs with this freezedried tomato powder stuff mum always had. Tasted quite good actually. Scrambled eggs and pesto too, but it seems now this has caught on in wanky cafes as "green eggs and ham" which is a bit lame.

uncooked is the only way to eat ramen

minna (minna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

uncooked ramen + shredded cabbage + julienned beets + lemon juice + sesame oil + salt&pepper-to-taste = AWESOMEST SLAW EVER

Sometimes I wonder about the guy who invented bread. And alcohol. I mean people must have thought they were nuts until it worked.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe this isn't unusual, but I try putting curry on just about everything and it nearly always works. My favorites are curried popcorn and curried scrambled eggs (also add fresh parmesan for extra taste delights). I'm trying curried grilled cheese next.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Lightly toast a piece of fluffy white good toasting bread. Spread generously with Skippy peanut butter (none of that unsweetened crud), and scatter chocolate sprinkles and mini marshmallows on top. Return to toaster oven and toast again until the marshmallows are lovely light brown.

Mmmmmm, gooey goodness. Easiest made in a toaster oven, but a light touch with a UK grill would probably work too.

And I used to eat popcorn tossed with a bit of butter and engevita yeast as a kid... sounds gross but I remember it tasting really savoury and good. Hey, what can I say... I had a health nut 70s mommy.

elisabeth k, Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I put curry in everything too teeny! Some of the best surprises I've had with the "try it all curry" tactic = curry white chicken chili (although it was more yellow), curry tuna salad, curry black beans & rice, etc. I've never thought 'bout the popcorn though, that sounds badical!

I told you you were my secret brother. :)
