I just spent seven hours watching the extended Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, the extended Two Towers preview and the Return of the King preview

I couldn't be happier. Also, my head hurts and I'm very sleepy.

But I REALLY COULDN'T BE HAPPIER. Because now I'm already bouncing off the goddamn walls and saying "I have to wait almost FOUR MONTHS for ROTK AARGGGGGGH!!!!"

Wait, that actually means I'm angry or frustrated or something. Never mind. Sleep. Sleep is my friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's where you've been!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds like my definition of a near perfect day. I wasted mine by going to work.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I too watched the TT with the ROTK preview last night: I don't think I'm going to bother with the ROTK when it comes out.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The above statement contains a heinous lie. Can you spot it?

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You didn't watch it last night?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Incorrect!

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's where you've been!

Ha!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I plan on renting this Friday and plan on being as disappointed as I was when I saw the first one.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Which means I clearly hate fun.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavens, don't be silly, I don't think THAT about ya or anyone else who isn't thrilled by it. Especially since I loathe it when said judgment is applied to me in turn...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, do you intentionally taunt us with these perfect straight lines?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think part of my problem is that I have never read the books.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, do you intentionally taunt us with these perfect straight lines?

I know exactly what I am doing. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned = world endurance record-holder ;)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that explains the silence!

stripey, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so jealous. I haven't even watched Two Towers a second time cause Netflix rejected my credit card!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that explains the silence!

Huddled with the prerequisite wine, popcorn and rabbit's feet? Typical;>

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the most despairing and morbid popular entertainment ever? i love it!

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

*chanting* Blink, and 4 months will be gone....breathe in, exhale;>

[Finally watched all extended "Fellowship", plus goodies this weekend, though I've owned it for a month!]

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the most despairing and morbid popular entertainment ever?

Also the gayest.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 28 August 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

As soon as I looked at the title of thread I knew only one person could have posted this.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 28 August 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I sure wasn't trying to hide it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned had on his LOTR thong and NOTHING ELSE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You ridiculous man. How would you know I was even wearing that?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am you and you are me.

David Gahan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

...and we are all together.

John Lennon (nickalicious), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched Two Towers last night. I forgot how friggin' intense it was. I think that of all the Geek Trinity trilogies (Star Wars, The Matrix, LoTR) it's actually LoTR which has the best CGI; it blends so much more seemlessly and subtley than in Star Wars/Matrix.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It takes advantage of working in so much in the way of natural settings on the one hand and complex miniatures on the other -- in ways I think that gives Jackson a somewhat freer hand. At the same time, it lets his effects team at WETA concentrate on the character animation -- Gollum is handled so fantastically that ILM might as well just go home.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i found Two towers far more entertaining simply because of gollum. the little guy's inner conflicts saved the thing for me. the walking trees were pushing it a bit (like "this part's for the little kids ")...was that in the book? i can't remember...my sixties haze and all.

jameslucasakarroland (jameslucasakarroland), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh. Yes, the Ents are very much in the book (don't recall offhand where Tolkien picked up specific inspiration for them).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a little let down by the two towers (mainly due to how blown away i was by the fellowship (esp. the expanded fellowship)), i hope the expanded two towers redeems it for me.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm watching it right now. (Even though it was in the mail from Netflix, I said fuck it and bought it, because I realized even though I'll buy the extended version, I'm not always going to want to be bothered with four hours and silly disc-switching.)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, "it" = "The Two Towers," not the extended one, unfortunately.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The new footage they showed in the preview for the extended TT made me very happy. It won't solve the film's biggest problem for me, namely that Treebeard is in the end made to look like an idiot (in book, he knows from the start that Saruman is causing destruction -- in film, despite having already met Gandalf and being well aware of all the 'smoke' from Isengard and etc it takes Pippin to point out to him what is going on), but I'm hoping the director/writer commentary clarifies that somewhat. (The change to Faramir's character I'm more sanguine about because it fits in with a general reinterpretation of Middle Earth's populace as being even more fragmented and mistrustful; since Jackson has maintained that tone from the start Faramir's initial actions aren't inconsistent...see also the main Two Towers thread etc. etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Tolkien is the one area (well, maybe Tolkien and kittens) where I see what people I like and respect have enthused wildly about his works and just shake my head and wonder what went wrong.

Found via an 'elf kittens' search.

Searched on "Tolkien kittens"...

Got the evil Gollum eyes there, sorta.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Did someone say "evil Gollum eyes"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That's no elf kitten. There can be only one.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

*ponders vision of Larcole imagining Orlando Bloom curling up her lap and purring*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Orlando is not it, he's too soap actor.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Liv Tyler!

three weeks pass...
Vaguely revived only to note this extremely strange image from what will be in the extended Two Towers -- I have my doubts about this:

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No doubt there will be more to come when, after the extended ROTK comes out a year or so down the track, Jackson will unveil the extended-extended versions. Then the remastered versions. Then the enhanced versions. Then the extended-extended-extended versions. He will no longer be the apprentice to the master.

Alex K (Alex K), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

DVD was supposed to stop all that nonsense - at least regarding widescreen or enhanced audio editions. the 4 disc editions really are worth it though, even if you're just a casual fan (as i am).

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 September 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

As soon as I looked at the title of thread I knew only one person could have posted this

Because mr ailsa isn't on ILX, as this is precisely what he has been partaking of recently. He keeps saying that I would enjoy this, but I have no interest whatsoever. Am I wrong in studiously avoiding the whole LoTR phenomenon?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 September 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, it's not for everyone. If you have no interest, don't fret over it. There are plenty of things people rave about I have no interest in!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 September 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

don't we know it.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 September 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" last night on telly and it was a bit like when I saw "The Two Towers" in the cinema (not by choice i hasten to add) - I kept thinking, why does it feel as if I've been watching this for 10 years (and that was only halfway through it!) I know it's long, but I've sat through longer; it's not actively boring either, quite a lot's going on; it's not especially slow either and it's not totally impenetrable - but it felt interminable. I think the reason probably is that it's just so ('scuse pun) epically uninvolving - I couldn't really muster any great concern for the comings and goings of a bunch of elves and dwarves.

Also, these Orcs are supposed to be really evil and dangerous arent'y they? So why were they regularly losing out in hand-to-hand combat with a bunch of fucking HOBBITS??!??!! Now I'm a lover not a fighter meself but I think even I could kick a Hobbit's arse if forced to go head-to-head (or head-to-knee in the hobbit's case) with one. Plus there's THOUSANDS of these Orc bastards and they're having difficulty killing a few Hobbits, a doddery old wizard and a dwarf, among others - and they're getting slaughtered in their hundreds - honestly it's like the Injuns in a John Wayne movie or the Republican Guard in a Gulf War.

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 1 May 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

You forgot to mention how when the Morgul-blade that dissolves after Frodo gets stabbed should have been shown in the early morning sunlight instead. Man that steams my beans.
