so suppose you want to go to a pub and hang out with your mates. but suppose you will die if you don't stop drinking alcohol. What should you drink while you are in the pub?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This happens to me a lot, except the dying bit.

I usually go with tap water. It's free, refreshing and I try to avoid caffeine. The better places give you Ice&slice, the slice being of lemon.

Sometimes you can buy blackcurrant squash which is very nice. They ordinarily use the blaclcurrant for cider and black.

Tonic water on its own is good too, but I've never had it in a pub.

toilet duck

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ok so i'm the only fool who read this as "pubs that aren't alcoholic" and thought Ireland had gone further with its prohibition.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I would drink coke or perhaps seven up.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Either tap water or the increasingly popular 'orange juice and lemonade' mocktail.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I came across this problem while drying out in January. I find pints of orange juice and lemonade are good although they can be expensive.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

duh! its gotta be ginger beer, innit.
preferably D&Gs, or failing that, some sort of exotic/obscure organic-ey stuff like fentimans. i have had elderflower cordial in a poub too, that rules.

i guess the basic is J2O. and im glad that they were invented and survived, as a decentish bog standard; long gone are the dark days where all you could get wqere those shitty britvic mixers that cost 80p for 2ml or something (although old school pubs often still onyl have these)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy: draft coke.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually go for sparkling mineral water.

I'll only ask for tap water if I'm ordering something else as well (for example, in the recent hot weather I was drinking a lot of water alongside my pints to keep at least vaguely hydrated). It just seems like you're ripping off the pub if you're sitting there and not paying for anything. Maybe that's just me.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I always feel guilty asking for tap water, even if I am getting other drinks. I shouldn't, though. In a club, I will ask for it on its own - I think that's fair enough.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

On the very rare occasion this happens = lime and soda, or Orange and lemonade like Rob. September is going to be largely dry for me, so I'll let you know.

Ronan, you weren't watching E4 last night by any chance were you?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

tap water or finch's orange. soda water can also be nice. coke, 7up, etc., have too much sugar and make me hyper if i drink more than one of them.

i think the publican could only get annoyed if there were whole tables of people drinking nothing but tap water.

is it true that in france it's illegal to refuse someone a glass of water?

angela (angela), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

What if you haven't got one on you?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the publican could only get annoyed if there were whole tables of people drinking nothing but tap water.

But I still think you're getting something you're not paying for. When you buy a drink in a pub you're paying for more than the drink itself - you're paying for the ambience etc.

Nick's right about the club being different - you've already paid to get in the door.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

lime and soda with ice - this used to be really cheap, like abt 10 pence for a pint 5 years ago or so, but now it's likely to cost you a quid or so...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What if you haven't got one on you?

you have to make one. (i am now officially disgusted with myself).

angela (angela), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Mostly blackcurrant, thought this has become expensive. However so has everything else in Dublin. Cheers!

Isn't it also Ireland where it's illegal to refuse someone a glass of water?

(your also getting something the landlord's not paying for. I wouldn't pay much for the ambience of any pub I've ever been in.)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i once got chucked out of a pub for asking for a pint of water and objecting to being charged a pound for it

PUNK ROCK!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

He's paying for the ambience in that it's made up in part of the decor, lighting, heat, surly bar staff etc.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I wish they would charge me like, 10p, or something, so I could feel I wasn't been a sponger.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Blackcurrant and soda or lime and soda yeah. The only drinks you can buy in Brighton for 40p! In fact, the only ANYTHING you can buy in Brighton for 40p.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s, me too, a club in Nottingham. I threatened to fetch the manager, and they let me off, using a loophole where I could have a glass of *fizzy* water for free.

My dad (who used to be a hotel manager) told me that in the UK too it's obligatory for licensed premises to provide free water if requested.

My friend introduced me to the Chinaman, which is a bit of a cheat as technically it does have a tiny bit of alcohol in. It's ginger beer, lime cordial and a dash of Angostura. And very nice it is too.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

As said upthread, definitely destroy draft coke. They never get the water levels right, and end up either serving you brown water, or something akin to treacle.

Being one of those sad gits that goes to pubs on their own specifically to play the quiz machines, J20 has become something of a perrennial stand-by to avoid being chucked out for taking the piss.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I wish they would charge me like, 10p, or something, so I could feel I wasn't been a sponger.

buy peanuts!

angela (angela), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Peanuts cost too much!

Draft coke is also usually flat.

and they let me off, using a loophole where I could have a glass of *fizzy* water for free.

?? please explain more

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, there is no j20 in ireland. i had to look it up on the internet to see what it was.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, I imagine the staff had been told to refuse people glasses of tap water so they could sell them bottled water instead, and the girl who was dealing with me obviously decided that she wasn't breaking staff rules if she gave me the soda stuff that comes out of the nozzly thing.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I was hoping it was a crazy EU regulation.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a fan of pints of orange juice and lemonade. Very refreshing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear you put down your drink, lick your lips, and say that in a ad. In a brummie accent, strangely.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad (who used to be a hotel manager) told me that in the UK too it's obligatory for licensed premises to provide free water if requested.

i also thought this was true. except i think there might be an exception for private clubs? our college bar claimed there was, anyway, and refused to serve tap water for a few months in my fourth year.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Pete to thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend introduced me to the Chinaman

Racist joke thread to thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(God, I'm awful. Sorry.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Water and lime or lemon is nice. Coke or Ginger ale will do for me otherwise.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I suspect it's named after the bowling action (in cricket) of the same name, viz. a googly bowled by a lefthander.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually get a pitcher of water at some point while I'm out so I don't dehydrate myself. I also like ordering Red Bull.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tea.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe no one's mentioned pickle juice yet.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuz that's nasss-tee!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

In this situation, I do club soda.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

ts: draft cola Vs. draught cola.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why I spelled it 'draft'. Get me away from all these Americans.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Bitter Lemon! Luminous green *and* contains quinine == beyond classic.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
mark s, me too, a club in Nottingham. I threatened to fetch the manager, and they let me off, using a loophole where I could have a glass of *fizzy* water for free.

Revive to ask which club? Because this has happened to me in Nottingham too. Exactly the same, except the fetching the manager thing.

Also, why do pubs not welcome draft coke drinkers more? The mark-up on that is insane; apparently it costs about 3p to them for a pint which they then charge up to £2 for.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

If someone comes into my local and orders a Coke then he'd better be hard cos me and my mates'll jump him in the bogs otherwise and nick his wallet. You know what I'm getting at? You dinnae go into a pub to drink Coke right?

Nutty Nigel (Nutty Nigel), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Or medium soft to fight off you and your imaginary fiends...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a well known fact that people who drink Coke have a lot more money on them than people who drink beer. Likewise, they are always much worse at fighting, because a big fat beer gut is a great help in a swedge.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I kick in everyone cos I'm nutty and even if I get kicked in I'll be back, cos I'm hard.

Nutty Nigel (Nutty Nigel), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I've decided, this is not Calum. Nigel never actually pays even lip service to being funny/interesting/any different ever.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My mate that doesn't drink booooze sometimes gets sick of diet irn bru and diet coke so orders the likes of fresh orange, lemonade & grapefruit or fresh orange, lemonade & bitter lemon

smee (smee), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Soda water with a splash of angostura bitters. It's the non-alcoholic drink for folks who aren't on the wagon, bitters being 90 proof or something.
