Had a nasty accident recently?

I have! Yesterday I was half way up one of those huge escalators at Tottenham Court Road tube station, standing on the right hand side behind a VERY large African lady. We both stepped out to the left to walk up, rather than ride, at exactly the same moment and bumped into each other. She made a vague signal that I took to mean 'go ahead', so I moved forward. Obv I had misunderstood as she moved at the same time and sort of tripped me up - THEN... fell on top of me! I fell backwards and headed rapidly down the escalator, head first on my back, with her still on top of my legs in a sitting position. At that moment someone stopped the escalator and simultaneously I managed to get my hands under me and get enough purchase on the edge of a step to do a sort of backward roll and get my feet down behind my head. She shot over the top of me and two or three London Underground blokes grabbed her near the bottom to break her fall. I ended up standing facing the top of the escalator as if nothing had happened. Today I have some superb pattern bruising on my back with the indentations of the edges of the steps clearly visible - strangely it's not that painful. She seemed relatively OK too. Could have been VERY nasty though.

Most importantly my records survived unharmed - my bag just fell onto a step and stayed there.

London Underground blokes grabbed her near the bottom

Mind the gap?

years ago at holland park tube station i tripped over my OWN feet at the top of a short flight of (non-moving) steps and flew all the way down them, probably abt 8-10 feet

i badly bruised my elbow and shoulder, and went to the doctor: i said "i think i've dislocated my elbow" and he said "don't be so silly you time-wasting young man" or unsympathetic equiv

i'm ok now

My entire adult life has been boringly free of nasty accidents. Especially when you consider that when I was a child I broke my arm three times and my collarbone once in the space of about 4 years... if I'd kept that rate up, think of the stories I could tell...

Dr C - that is a fantastic story. I kinda wish i had seen it!

mark s in particular - round my hood i've been approached by two nigerian/ghanaian gentlemen with clipboards asking whether i had "suffered an accident in the past 3 years" twice in the past 2 weeks. i presume this is another ambulance-chasing, no-win, no-fee scam at best, but has it heppened to anyone else?

Dr C, although I am sorry that you hurt yourself, what a fantastic story! I haven't really had any nasty accidents to be honest, unless you count me burning myself with some hot oil t'other day. it blistered & looked horrible, still nothing too serious thank goodness!

I haven't had a nasty accident since cracking a rib go-karting two years ago, and that wasn't so much an accident as "I really don't seem to be getting the hang of this corner. I really don't seem to be getting the hang of this corner. Ow!"

I am not as clumsy as people think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite Dr.C's best efforts, I am still having difficulty picturing all the manouevres.

tell them how you got the scar on your forehead.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

N - imagine sliding down a flight of stairs on your back, head first with an African Woman half-sitting, half lying on your legs. Then imagine that you stop by grabbing something behind your head. You stop, she doesn't and you do a backward roll. As your feet go over your head you conveniently end up standing upright. It's easy! Actually don't try this at home folks.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So when you stopped, she went over you. OK. In what position was she?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Broken a rib twice playing football, and that's about it. Oh, and the time I tried to jump down the stairs in Burger King, thwacked my head hard on the stucco ceiling then fell back-first onto the tiled steps. Ow.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and is she now bearing your child?

that's to Dr C, natch

chris (chris), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sort of headfirst with arms outstretched, but slightly sideways. I think someone had tried to grab her arm and it slowed her down a bit and stopped her going *really* head first which could have been horrible.

I am very confident that she isn't, Chris.
