let's have a cocktail party...

go on, just imagine it (it'll take your mind off work), your ideal cocktail party: what would you be drinking, what would you wear and what would we be listening to.
Personally, I'd go for classic tux, be playing Aint That A Kick in the Head by Dean Martin and drinking an Old Fashioned surrounded by ladies who look a bit like Audrey Hepburn...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be wearing a tight sheer black shirt, plain-front khakis and loafers, drinking red wine, and listening to any of the "with the Miles Davis Quintet" albums. The ladies would look like Katie Holmes, and of course they would hang on my every word.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

And I would avoid that guy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Katie Holmes? Paging Mr Obvious, Mr Kenan Obvious...

(also obv Katie Holmes has zero class and wouldn't be suitable for a cocktail party anyway)

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.ren-com.com/vegasimg/ot26.jpg

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Me, Fitzgerald, gin, tonic.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

There would have to a wide assortment of fruity drinks. And a live band doing covers of Pixies songs and other rock classics, slowed-down with a female blues singer in a sequin gown crooning. Maybe a couple of duets with a snazzy male singer wearing a tux. I would wear something really outlandish and fluffy and say, "Oh, darling!". There would be lots of rockstars there and actors and actresses and of course my friends and family. And it would be held in a penthouse overlooking Paris or some other beautiful city. And there would be finger foods - pickles, of course! And fruits and cheeses and mock meats and champagne and ... (lost in la la land)

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

pickles?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, as you will see on the pickles thread, I tend to like pickles. It's my thing.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'll crash Tep's party. And take some pickled onions.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Some enviromentalists I knew in university used to have monthly cocktail parties, just like normal house parties except you had to drink cocktails. The house was filthy, the food was meatless and some of the people stank but the pot was good and usually featured some good cooking.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd wear a navy blue velvet suit with monstrous lapels and a monacle, drink Black Russians or Vampires, smoke cloves, speak with a Thurston Howe III from Gilligan's Island accent ("maaaahvelous!") all night, and I'd put Lovage on the phonograph.

*jingles ice around in emptyish glass*

Anyone up for a trip to the baaaaaaaahr?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, does Tep mean F. Scott or Ronan? Oh well, either way...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he means Ella Fitzgerald actually.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

If I ever go to a party with mock meats, kill me.

(mock lesbians to thread!)

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha oh I thought it was like guests, rather than music.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Which reminds me, when my brother was 12 my mum took him to one of Cynth1a P4yne's parties (albeit after the arrests etc., so it was toned down a bit). He got to see some mock lesbian action I've never stopped envying. Grr.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Awww, You wouldn't come to my fancy schmancy cocktail party, Mark? But you could bring your own meat!

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to look like Audrey Hepburn and hang on Dave's arm with a slim flute of champagne!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope it's ella! much as i like ronan i don't think listening to him would set the requisite air of suave, urbane, devil-may-care sophistication...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

and mock meat - bleargh! canapes would have to be v sixties i think... devils on horseback, vol au vents etc...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wheres the beef?
http://www.mulletsgalore.com/home/images/american_pabst_w.jpg

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, does Tep mean F. Scott or Ronan? Oh well, either way...

Oh yeah, sorry Ronan! I meant Scott. And Zelda. And if we get Scott drunk enough, I might hit on Zelda. Bring pretzels.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You didn't mean Ella? Wellity wellity wellity...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Nickel. I mean, she could come, too, but Scott's my man.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott vs Ella FITE!

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ella would win coz i'd help her out... (every party with pretentions or respectability etc should descend into a brawl sooner or later, so i might as well start it)...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Slim flute" may be the greatest two-word combo in the history of the world.

I would wear a motorcycle jacket and crash through the front-window, having just been beaten within an inch of my life by a rival gang. I'd crawl to my feet, brushing broken glass from my arms, and hold up the highball glass I still had in my left hand, miraculously still topped-up with gin and tonic, and say "cheers, everybody" and then I'd down the whole thing in one go.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Including the glass, Tracer?

Archel, you were quick enough to pick up on my big pickle, aren't you going to have a go at bringing along my own meat too?

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ella would win coz i'd help her out... (every party with pretentions or respectability etc should descend into a brawl sooner or later, so i might as well start it)...

But Scott would have Ernest Hemingway!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i may well throw this party one night... and hemingway was a bad fighter, i'm sure...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Zelda could easily scratch Ella's eyes out, if need be.

Mark, I made no comment about pickles other than to imply that you may enjoy being hit with one, since you like them so much. Not in a sex way.

It's hugely declasse to bring meat items to a cocktail party I suspect.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But didn't Ernie teach Ezra Pound how to box?

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a peach chardonnay and velour LADIES-ONLY party during which we listen to Christopher Cross and eat turtle-ice cream pie with BIG spoons.

Mandee, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

but this is a cocktail party, cybele - he'd be drunk! and you CAN'T have a ladies-only cocktail party...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard Harris beat him up in that movie, but that's okay. Richard Harris probably could've kicked my ass right up until the day he died.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah? I'm in, Mandee!

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh suuure, Archel's gonna ditch my party for Christopher Cross.

YOU'LL RUE THE DAY, MR CROSS!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Why can't I have a ladies-only cocktail party?

Mandee, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If I can't have my own cocktail party, I'm just going to go to Tracer's.

Mandee, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The cocktail party of my dreams has Blatz, Candyland, and some guy playing steel drums in the corner.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Kirsten's.

Mandee, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

coz it's not fair!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

7pm - 9pm: Gin, Tep and Scott.
9pm onwards: recovery in velour with Mandee and Christopher Cross.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, so yr not coming to mine at all then...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

7pm - 9pm: Gin, Tep and Scott.
9pm onwards: recovery in velour with Mandee and Christopher Cross.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE.

Two hours of gin? Two hours?! You think Christopher CROSS is up for taking it late night? Hell no. He'll be done by 9:30 and where will you be then? Lezzing it up drunk-style with Mandee, that's where.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe we all can get caught between the moon and new york city.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, I do not look anything like Audrey Hepburn. So as I understand it I'm all but BANNED from yours.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mandee, can I come to your party at 9:45?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Lezzing it up drunk-style with Mandee

ILE's purpose has been fulfilled. Thank you all for coming, and have a safe journey home.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I would Tep, but you just insulted my main man, Chris C.

Mandee, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.butlercountychamber.com/regatta/chriscross.jpg

It's hard to believe that such a heavenly voice could come out of such a homely man.

Mandee, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I would wear this: http://www.chelsea-girl.com/shop/eve1a.jpg, and would go with a date (volunteers?) to Sarah's party.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Christopher Cross now plays in Tenacious D.

Sailing takes me away....mother fucka...

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Beautiful dress, luna! I must go pick one out for myself. :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, I do not look anything like Audrey Hepburn. So as I understand it I'm all but BANNED from yours.

it's open to anyone no matter what they look like - you are not banned.just one woman who looks like audrey hepburn breatlessly admiring me is actually enough, everyone else can look as they like and do whatever the hell they want...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I would Tep, but you just insulted my main man, Chris C.

I just don't think he can hold his liquor for long!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a great dress, luna - drop in at mine on the way...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That dress shouldn't be that close to the D.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I'll be like Santa Claus and go to all the parties in one night. Just don't ask me what's in the bag.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm... I'm thinking about this one:
http://vintagecachet.com/Groups/Dresses/Killer%20Party%20Dress/1Front.jpg
to match my eyes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Manhattans at the Gramercy Hotel. And you're not invited.

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh I like it, Sarah

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

all back to mine - apart from jody...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Where: Musso And Frank on Hollywood Blvd.
Drink: martini obviously.
Wearing: ehh, whatever.
Listening to: eavesdropping on conversations at the other tables

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What sorta naughtinesses are Ned and Dan cooking up over at their table?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I couldn't let this one slip off the page.

Where did I put my drink?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Location: A large Outer Banks Beach House. We're up on the roof deck, from where we can see the sun about to set into the Sound. Everyone brought the making of their favorite drinks, so just inside the house there's nearly enough liquor to open a bar, at least ten different brands of beer, and various bottles of wine. Aaron G. is spinning techno, and nearby Ned and Dan are discussing the relative merits of shoegaze and the Cure as cocktail party music.

A little later this evening, when the coals are ready, there's going to be a barbecue, but if anyone's hungry now, there's a good selection of chips, pretzles, pickles, etc. No one dressed up very much after swimming earlier today. Some people are still in their trunks or bikinis; other people are in t-shirts and shorts; some others (including at least a couple of the guys) are wearing sarongs. Millar and Ally are daring each other to go skinnydipping later tonight; Helltime is adding that we all should go for a midnight swim in the buff.

Are the coals ready? Chris Barrus just passed by and down the steps to the grill, with a martini in one hand and a plate of marinated steak in the other, wearing an apron that reads "Kiss the Chef." For those who don't want red meat, there's plenty of fish, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables, also ready for grilling.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's kinda not.

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna be the St. Pauli Girl, milling around with a revealing dress and a tray full of overflowing beer steins.

"My, you look thirsty!"

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love the chance to go to a cocktail party--or to meet friends at the right bar--where you really need to dress up. I enjoy that. For a really special occasion, say New Year's Eve, I'd like to wear a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo trousers. Nice things to drink: Martinis, champagne, or the rarely seen champagne sidecar, and sparkling mineral water.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

nearby Ned and Dan are discussing the relative merits of shoegaze and the Cure as cocktail party music.

Hurrah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

alternatively, you could follow my example and spend a sleeplessnight in Vegas in a white tux drinking watered down "bourbon" on the house..
Cocktail/dressed-up parties are better in theory than in practice, I would have to say.

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 29 August 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey I'll go to Vegas as long as I can still wear my dress.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
i really think this thread is amazing, and i almost typed this dress is amazing. i'm sure i'd think the same of the dress.

i was at at a cocKtail party last night, well a bar - a nice one!!

Surmounter, Thursday, 10 May 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

If I can wear this dress and drink gin, I don't care who the company is.

Madchen, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

That's gorgeous Madchen. I want to throw a cocktail party now.

Anna, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Luna, that dress is cool but it just won't do! You gotta have naked shoulders at the cocktail party, the better to feel the warm breeze on the veranda as you mingle (without social phobias, without resorting to conversation with your host's dog), delicate stemware in hand.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, after I last posted here I spent about an hour lusting after dresses on poshgirlvintage, all of them tiny, unfortunately.

That isn't the dress I originally posted, Beth - this one is:

luna, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ah thread. How tragic that it's been almost four years since I even went to a virtual cocktail party, let alone a real one.

Archel, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

six years pass...

Hey what all bottles of what could one get away with as a minimum cocktail bar

lorde othering (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 December 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

Difford's lists 14 key ingredients:

Vodka
Gin
Rum
Tequila
Scotch
Cognac
Bourbon
Triple sec
Orange liqueur
Apricot liqueur
Berry liqueur
Dry vermouth
Sweet vermouth
Sparkling wine

Tbh, you can probably cut the apricot and orange. Also need sugar syrup and bitters.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Saturday, 28 December 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

V handy thks

We'll prob drop a lot more than that...hoping to get away with vodka, bourbon, martini/vermouth, prosecco, gin, white rum.

Looking to get the max out of those, some mint leaves, citrus fruits and the few cartons of fruit juices, is this possible or wise

lorde othering (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 December 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, nothing is essential. You can get a lot of mileage out of a couple of bottles and some juice.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Saturday, 28 December 2013 19:18 (twelve years ago)

Lookin at the classics a bottle of orange bitters prob worth adding then we're set
