Action girls on film: the thread where I complain about action girls on film

Obviously it's not a phenomenon limited to films (see any number of comics and tv shows), but the trend of having chix do kung fu has reached a critical mass for me and become mundane, culminating in Clare Floriani (sp?) in the Medallion (nb I don't intend to watch it). Part of the appeal of the original ladies (Carrie-Anne Moss, Zhang Ziyi + Michelle Yeoh) was their athleticism, which made them more than just eye candy doing high kicks, but actually *doing* stunts that took skill.

Certainly, the same complaint can be made against male stars (BenLo and Matt Damon among others like STIFLER?!), but w/ female stars it has fully become fetishistic (as most all trends w/ given portrayals of women).

This is just something that has moved into the mainstream - it's been there for ages. I love seeing women do martial arts, especially if they are small or demure looking women kicking the shit out of macho men (the scene in the rough inn in Crouching Tiger, for instance). But it has to look good, and some do and some don't.

hasn't ms. beckensale (?) reinvented herself as an action star? about as plausible as a gun toting meg ryan. nobody has topped weaver's ripley.

She's another one that brought out my complaints but having recently seen the trailer to Underworld, it looks much too stylish for me to harp on.

In the end, though, it's athleticism that appeals to me and the standard "Let's speed up this fight so it looks like our actors are really good and stuff!" that is the pits.
