Eh. A lot of the entries already in the dictionary are no less odd or short-lived, and are "venerated" only because of their age. The OED has never claimed to be a clearinghouse for word advocacy; it's descriptivist.

I haven't even heard of half those words.

I took the poll and picked "robata," which came in dead last.

uh, they like don't understand what "bootylicious" means (or is purported to mean, at least).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also, "turntablist"

From some reason I was obliged to look up "mentalist" in the OED.

I've known someone who's used the word "cantopop" in reference to one of the musical styles he likes best since about 1998 or so. Glad to see that "his" word is in the dictionary then.

And I voted for "Eeyorish", because it has so much personal meaning to me and because I do think I could use that word quite often. A grand total of 9%, babes.

One of those "Eeyorish" votes was mine!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

9% of the people voted for muggle, the most useless word in the list. Unless you *do* happen to know someone with magical powers and need to differentiate them from everyone else. Fucking Potter.

Or have ever used metaphor.
