DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Chelsea have obv. had enough of being sent to Israel so let's send them to Turkey instead.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent, don't have to do it any more!

I don't know why I'm so excited, but I am! Chelsea should be fine, as should Man U and Arsenal.

Rangers said before the draw that they didn't care who they got as long as it wasn't Man U, hah!

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Man U fell on their feet anyway. I'd be happy enough with that Celtic draw, it could be alot worse.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Galataseray almost ended up with Man U.

Group C's a bit wide open. group H should give us some interesting matches

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Group D looks a bit of a stinker.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

they're talking about it on sky now - turks V Greeks - there'll need to be a lot of security there...

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Man U are going to piss all over rangers

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Celtic got the best pool though group C looking even too.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

group d looks a bit tough, i think arsenal may struggle with group b also

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Loads of interesting little things there. Crespo back to Lazio again. Arsenal will have to go to the former USSR twice in the winter, which might shake the group up somewhat.

Juventus' group is a humdinger. Greeks vs turks, plus Real Sociedad, the *unknown quantity* AKA The Newcastle of Spain. But actually in the Champions League (arf!)

And of course, AC Milan knocked out Ajax by the skin of their teeth in the Quarter Finals last year, and they're paired up together.

Man U's group looks like a piece of piss. They should romp that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone fill me in on the various football seasons/tourneys that are run? I'm clueless about this.

This looks like the top teams from the best leagues in Europe. How long does this go on for? Is it every year?

What about the regular football season, when does that start/end?

I see these football discussions and they seem to take place year round.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.uefa.com and read what you can about UEFA cup and Champions league for a primer.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am really glad we never got put in Group F. Otherwise, I am quietly confident. I like that we don't have too much travelling to do either. I think Rangers will struggle, and I imagine Glasgow will be mental the night of the Man U game.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Will Rangers be allowed to travel to Manchester?

Going to Greece is awful for anyone. I fear for us, generally. But you never know.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Man U have a good draw, which often seems to be the case of late - their group looks far easier than Arsenal's, say. I fancy the three English clubs to get through. What's the format this year? They've dropped the second group stage haven't they? Is it straight knockout for the last 16?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a feeling last night Man Utd would play Rangers

I'm quite gutted about the Toon still, for some reason

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yes Martin, just this one group stage and then straight into knockout. To help the teams and cut down on the number of matches teams are playing in this day and age according to the president of UEFA

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

'mon the Hoops!

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I do hope they eventually get rid of this group stage as well.

Group D looks fantastic to me.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the group stage - i guess two was an extravagance tho

but will the teams who finish third still go into the UEFA cup? apparently they have scrapped this rule?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

According to the Uefa website here, the third teams do go back down to the UEFA Cup.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The group stage is rubbish. Bring back straight knockout: just say no to meaningless matches.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But you still get meaningless matches in knockout stages (see Celtic's dismal 1-0 stroll in the park last night whereby that could have been a whole other three points for Hungaria to play for last night, rather than trying to chase back four away goals...)

Actually the group stage is rubbish, and v. expensive.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What odds Chelsea attempting a buyout of Besiktas?

Celtic have a very good chance in their group. The English sides have all got good draws too. Rangers... well, they got rid of Copenhagen, who are the kind of side they usually screw up against. Could they take Panathinaikos...

But on the whole, it just isn't the same without Rosenborg in the mix.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well quite, as Rosenborg's entire raison d'etre in Europe is to gub Celtic with goals by ex-Celtic reject Harald Brattbakk who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo whilst in the SPL but is given to freely score against us at any given opportunity.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Harald Brattbak score the greatest goal I have ever seen at Celtic Park, againts Kilmarnock, some fule (John Collins?) shys it in from the North Stand side, Harald takes it on his knee and cuts inside of a Killie defender and from about 22-25 yards lets leash the greatest goal (it was already a goal as soon as he hit it) you have ever (ever) seen. Ailsa. : P

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that the game he scored four goals against Kilmarnock? I was going out with a Killie fan at the time and he was not best pleased, given that I'd been regaling him with tales of Harald's crapness for months. The rest of the time he was rubbish though. Well, mostly.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Did all Celtic's training sessions consist of Jansen and Venglos instructing players on how to hit farm animals with musical instruments? Surely the focus should have been more towards basic balls skills?

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"balls skills"? Are you insinuating that Celtic are a load of bollocks?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My subconscious has a mind of it's own.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

All of Partizan's home games should be entertaining. I wouldn't be surprised if a few big names came unstuck against a bit of balkan ferocity.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

battle of britain would be an original thing to dub it don't you think?

The angle on the news up here today was more the fact that Alex McLeish likes to think of himself as Alex Ferguson Jr (given that he was his boss at Aberdeen, and McLeish is apparently never off the phone to Fergie for "advice", which seems to me to be a case of not being terribly good at your own job, but hey-ho).

But, yes, the third Battle of Britain this year.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

COME ON YOU FUCKERS LET'S SEE WHAT YOU'VE GOT

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that a football challenge, Nick, or just a general taking-on-ILE thing?

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

bergkamp must be feeling particularly smug today, with his long standing "i aint getting on no plane fule" stance, there is no way he will even be considered for the two eastern europe fixtures, which are likely to be hell on legs...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ties to watch = Juve v Sociedad

ajax v Milan mmmmmmmmm

chris (chris), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

are Kiev a spent force or do they have a whole bunch of Shevchenkos up their sleeve, that's the question

stevem (blueski), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Or a whole bunch of Rebrovs.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

pre or post Hoddle?

chris (chris), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

They don't make benches that long.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, dont forget rebrov did the business for kiev, and was considered by many to actually be a better player than the former n*sync striker

they still have maxim shatskikh though dont they?
