The most notorious strip from The Far Side. c/d?

Classic. Its funny because no one gets it.

And the cow looks really pissed as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He's all like, "Yeah, bitch, these are my tools. What? What?"

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Larson's explanation was along the lines of: "If cows made tools they'd be a bit rub."

Classic. Still not sure if it's funny though.

robster (robster), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is the saw not fitted with a handle that a hoof can use?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

>I think Larson's explanation was along the lines of: "If cows made tools they'd be a bit rub."

Actually, that wasn't it at all.

fletrejet, Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't it then be a hoofle?

robster (robster), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough. I was working from (very poor) memory.

robster (robster), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, fletrejet?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

In nature documentaries, he always saw how primates were supposed to be superior to all the other animals because they knew how to make tools. His idea was "What if cows knew how to make tools? Then they would move a few rungs up the evolutionary ladder! Ha!" He later admitted this wasn't in the least bit funny.

He also said it was a mistake to make one of the tools look vaguely like a saw, because then people wasted time trying to figure out what the tools were used for, when he intended them to be meaningless to humans.

'i see light where others see none' weird humour cred alert: i thought this was funny first time i saw it (in a non-controversial context), and not in need of explanation. in the far side anthology, larson says that he suspected the bit that confused lots of ppl was including a semi-recognizeable saw, the only 'actual' tool on display. Richard Avedon to thread!

...which is kinda what robster originally said.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

..but I think Ned and NA nailed it. It's all about the bad ass pose.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to see abtract reinterpretations from visual artists of this very strip.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

..while playing Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" and the Beach Boys' "Smile" outtakes at the same time, and dining on durian smeared in Vegemite.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(i just remembered a word coined by larson in his explanation [in semi-answer to Mark C heh] : 'hoofiwork' )

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah, bitch, these are my tools. What? What?"

I really need an occasion to say this. Like, every day.
