Jobs in New York (City)

Surely someone knows of a job for me out there? I mean, honestly -- I've applied to every book store, record store and novelty restaraunt in the city. Even people who walk dogs aren't calling me back. Gallery owners are scoffing at me. I bounced a check last month and I need cash. Anyone else have a drought this bad?

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a drought like that that lasted a few months when I lived in New York a little less than two years ago now. (Why I no longer live in New York City).

Moss Feaster (Moss Feaster), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that seems to be about it. Everyone (family etc.) keeps asking if it's the economy, and the answer is no -- my real line of work (Film Production) is always in a recession. But there's no other work out there just LIFTING shit. Y'know?

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

wrong: I going to be an art handler tomorrow

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The place I worked is called Crozier Fine Arts. Everyone there is crazy but it's a pretty fun place to work. There's also this option: I going to be a pan handler tomorrow

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(I don't have any connections at Crozier any more, so I can't help you there, but if you call ask to speak with Tim, the warehouse guy)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, if I'm not legally entitled to work in the USA, could I get a job handling art with you?
I'm a hard worker, and a nice guy, and I'd probably call in sick every third day, so if you didn't like me, it's not like I'd be around much anyway.
Okay the last part is not true, but I'm contemplating a big move, and I have some family in show bizz in NYC, and I'm thinking, I've done Montreal. I've done Vancouver. I've done Wawa, Ont. What's left?

x-post, damn

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Awsome. I thought about pan handling when I had nothing better to do, just to see how things worked out.

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Panhandling's cool cause you set your own hours. If you're 1 minute late at Crozier it's a pretty big problem.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

these pans ain't gonna handle themselves ya know!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know what's crazier than living in an apartment building? Being homeless. That shit is fucked up.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell me more.

Assure me that things will work out.

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What type of film production do you do, JtM? I have some post-production hookups that I can ask about any openings...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dp mostly, though I will have my own FCP setup in about two weeks, hopefully. I can do about anything and have (except PA). Audio mixing, location audio, gaffing, Key grip, director... you name it... and at this point I'll take anything that pays (except PA)

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll put out some feelers for you.

(i've always wanted to say that)(but no really, i'll ask around)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Awsome. Thanks man.

I was trying to get a job at the Natural History Museum coz I thought it would b cool (and it would). They're not hiring tho.

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Update from New York: 6 weeks for me and two interviews.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I better hang on to my table-waiting job then.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, don't drop that without calling me first so I can have it

ModJ, Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, ModJ, are you an editor/writer like most of these people?
If so, look here: http://www.allworth.com/Pages/PG2_FLO.htm

Dunno. I have a feeling their not INUNDATED with resumes.

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

recheckin from SF, hey I got thru a typing, 10key, excel, payables test. i kicked ass! problem: when accountemps called my previous employer all they would do was to verify employment..the temp agency director said that "worried her", "are you sure you left on good terms?" isn't it standard practice to only verify employment and not say anything else about the former employee? as far as the race for the bottom I've applied for aboout 10 jobs in the last week and received one call back, no interview, so SF is in the lead...(Sean do you use craig'slist?)

jameslucasakarroland (jameslucasakarroland), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, I apply to every job on Craigslist that even remotely matches my skill set. I discussed your other question with my former employer before I left--I used to work at a law firm so I'm trusting this information is accurate. Aparantly it is not just standard practice but against the law to say anything about a former employee other than verifying their employment.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yea i think craig'slist beats sfgate, are you just looking in SF only? that's what i've been doing, maybe i need to be more willing to take Bart...good luck to ya, (ain't it nice to have this Mark Twain summer back? that hot weather was starting to get to me)
(end of provinciality)

jameslucasakarroland (jameslucasakarroland), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

3 months and nobody calls, heh.

(I like it like that.)
