I'm fairly sure there was. I think it was on a branch off the York-Scarborough line that went up into the moors.

You can get one of the 840 Coastliner buses from York to Whitby, but they're not the speediest things in the world.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought "what's pickering", as in "do you like pickering?" "i don't know, i've never pickered"...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes simeon, im going to check out that book, thanks for the heads up!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool - just checking, the book is one of a series and good enough that I'll check out the rest.

Is there anything of note in Pickering? I seem to remember that all playground equipment in my youth was made in Pickering , and the 5 yr old me thought it must be a hell of a fun place to visit.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and I thought this thread was going to be about some sort of homosexual lucky dip.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been to pickering.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a steam train that goes to Pickering - i went on it 2 years back, is it still running?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 30 August 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

The only way to get from York to Whitby by train is by changing at Darlington. The steam train from Pickering connects to the Middlesborough-Whitby line, but it doesn't run south of Pickering. Before 1960-something the line went right through to Malton, and every so often someone says "um, maybe we could reopen that bit too."

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 30 August 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a regular bus service from Malton, on the York-Scarborough Line to Pickering, from where you can get the NYMR, I have a moorsbus timetable knocking around somewhere. If you want to go to Whitby without the bus you have to go to Middlesborough then across.

Acording to UK Bus Malton-Pickering is every hour, at least, and takes 20 minutes.

As for the Old Malton Line, ACoRP and North Yorkshire County Council are looking into the feasibility of reopening the line, clearly a big gap in the public transport in a really popular tourist destination. They should reopen Thirsk Scarborough as well but that's clearly idealistic madness.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 30 August 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

And why not Whitby-Scarborough whilst they're at it?

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 31 August 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly Pickering Kirkbymoorside Helmsley is a prime candidate for a Parry People mover based system.
