Is this any good? - New Computer...

I'm thinking about buying a new PC for home; my one is 5 years old and was only modest spec. even then, and I'd like to be able to hook up to the net in my room so I can leave stuff downloading overnight. I also need to do lots of writing on it obv., plus have plenty of HD space for pictures and music. I'm also considering getting Cubasis or summat like that so I'd need a PC able to handle it.

Prime considerations;

CashMoney; I'm gonna need to buy from somewhere where I can get finance and pay by direct debit each month as I have no capital.

Space - my desk is small and cluttered, so a flatscreen would be good.

Ignorance - I know fucking nothing about computers.

Software / Drives - I might want to play Champ on it, but probably not much else. I will want to watch DVDs and burn CDs though. I'm not bothered much else about what software comes with it, as, um, I know... people... who... work in IT at big companies, hence Microsft Office and other bits and bobs are easily acquirable.

I've thought about a laptop and cool and portable as that would be, the price is prohibitive. I think I'd rather spend £600-£800 on a desktop with twice the RAM and HD space.

This looks Ok to me, but are EMachines crapulent or not? Where is the best place to shop?

What's the best processor? How much graphics power do I need?

This looks ace too. Acer than that one. DVDRW!

CRT's not flatscreen tho, is it?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 29 August 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it isn't - CRT = cathode ray tube. I almost bought a flat screen monitor on ebay - a 17" one which eventually sold for £126. You'd expect to pay £250 minimum new for a decent flat screen.

Buy a Mac, they have a personal finance plan, with okay terms. Much cheaper to get a loan though as most store credit/financing deals have pretty high interest rates, even credit cards offer better rates than most financing deals.

I preferred this thread when Nick was just talking to himself.
