You know what I'm talking about. The show climaxed in the opening sequence. I imagine some teenage boys might have as well.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I kept expecting Eminem and 50 Cent to lez it up, since they were being so cuddly with each other and talked about "holding each other's moon men". Ahem.

Ally-zay (mlescaut), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi John. I played "The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton" on my radio show yesterday. Because I was listening to it the other night and that line about "when you lock someone up for dreaming their dream, don't expect them to thank or forgive you" really hit me hard. So whatever, thanks.

I think it can be really sexy to kiss someone when the only parts touching are your lips. Mmm.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, `tis a bit disquietingly incongruous, no? It's also somewhat depressing how said image seems to have lost its inherent "shock value".

RJG (RJG), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

britney is wearing wedding white, madonna is butching it up in black, madonna assuming the male role and taking her student for "lessons" is really the kind of pervy we expect from boys.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

if by that you mean it was k-unimaginative, then yes.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i cant' decide what i thought of britney's vocal mannerisms rendered so obvious like that, singing someone else's song and then being followed by her biggest idol and nearest competitor.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Eminem upsatged by puppet...
Does this mean he has to get into another pointless argument with Moby?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

chris piuma = right OTM. of course madonna's going to 'butch it up in black,' anthony, nothing surprising there -- she is in the male role (older, more experienced, "wiser") to xtina & britney's trad-trophy wife roles. (for some reason i'm getting a mental image of xtina and britney as two bunny lebowskis, you know?) there was nothing surprising about it at all, and less than nothing subversive about it (pop chiclets in pg-13 vividian shocker)

also, eminem's sub-sandlerian anger management schtick = the shark, it has been jumped.

maura (maura), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the moment I figured out that was Xtina I realized they must've turned her microphone way, way, way down so she didn't make the others sound terrible. the bit was wrecked straightaway by Madonna's flubbing of the first NOTES of that Hollywood song. eep!

I thought Eminem was funny, and it's strange b/c there's no way that bit should've been funny, but it worked.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

it was funny in that context b/c eminem actually tried a bit and showed some comic timing. as opposed to many of the other scripted "jokes," whose meager humor was flattened by poor readings.

as for that opening threesome, i don't think the iconography was especially well thought-out.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or doesn't everyone think Madonna needs to stop flogging the stillborn "Hollywood" single?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna has only had one good song in the last 5 years, and that's the Gap advert song.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, maybe we can get them to issue an apology for that

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"we deeply regret the facile iconography in the opening number. in the future mtv will consult with leading lights in the discipline of cultural studies before planning costuming and choreography."

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Copresenting the award for best use of iconography in music video dance number...Northrop Frye and Johnny Knoxville.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it's still just the tired old "softcore is subversive" meme until guys with beards get to kiss on American TV, which won't be happening, because these moments are all about the hetero male gaze, which is why the whole thing registers a big "cute, but why wouldn't I just watch porn instead?"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

j0hn, there have been man/man kisses on mtv awards shows too, i think. but they have had "goofy" marks around them, where the lesbian stuff has the cheesy solemnity of, as you say, soft core porn.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

'and lo, thousands of boners were born'

maura (maura), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah amateurist that's my point - the whole "girls kissing = HOTT!!!" whistle whistle wolf-call wolf-call biz is not only not subversive (i.e., about as un-queer as you can get), but deeply conservative. Madonna kissing Missy Elliot might be a different matter, but Madonna kisses Britney = "Where The Boys Aren't, Part VIII: Island of the Straight MTV Director With A Vision"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't this line of argument presume that someone put in the kiss because they figured it was daring or subversive?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna to thread

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

but to answer you, no. It's a reading, not a "if they did it for this reason, fine, if for other reasons, not fine" thing. Though it does seem a little blinkered to imagine that this wasn't rehearsed, discussed in pre-VMA mtgs., etc, especially considering that it's Maddy involved, who micromanages her every gesture

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a really good kiss for Britney & Xtina to have done, I think. The style of kiss that is. A half-intensity open-mouthed, brush off, intimate, speed-said 'I love you, but'. If B & C had kissed, in that manner, ie not the deep-throat forced long kiss or the peck, but this style, so intimate and quick it would have hinted at weird shared emotions and relationship that would have kinda made my mind quake trying to unravel exactly what was meant by it. Obviously, I would know it was contrived but it would still look weird convincing. Whereas, M & B + M & C - I dunno, something's sticking with me when I try 'read' it, like it's some sort of motherly kiss (a bird dropping worms in its chicks beak), affectionate not sexy.

I don't exactly consider the "lezzing up" moment that great, contrary to my possibly-slightly-sarcastic-but-sometimes-I-can't-even-tell-anymore earlier comments (on this and other threads, 'specially on ILM), but it was by far the most (ie 'only') interesting thing to happen all night on that show.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I missed the show -- weren't the kisses jsut part of the choreography? And totally undeserving of the attention they're getting? And thereby just another way to show that the VMA's are boring?
