Doom Patrol: Classic or Dud

Since we're talking about him on every other thread...

colin clarke, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He makes me laugh, so I say CLASSIC. Though he does start getting annoying when he posts 10 times in a row...

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think he's hysterical, but not in the way he intends to be. He thinks he's being witty, but in truth he's being an arse, and watching someone unintentionally make an arse of himself is one of the funniest things ever.

And I love the way Mark S. made his head split open. That was GRATE!!!

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As Tom said in a previous thread, Grant Morrison did his best work in the service of Cliff Steele and Niles Caulder. As did Richard Case - excellent artwork. The writers & artists bookending the Morrison / Case years are crap. Damn that Vertigo.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Frustrating, that's him in a nutshell. Clearly Geir Hongro finally has a true equivalent here, though even Geir could actually be honestly funny at points.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

.*phew* very exciting stuff.
Too bad about the heroin and the madness!

duane, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(for that quote alone = classic)

duane, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it's a true testament to the power of ILM that DP is the only real, ongoing problem that the board has had. Well, apart from the C**rtn*y L*ve flamepit, but I don't think I've ever seen any forum have a discussion of her that doesn't turn nasty.

Maybe we should keep him as, like, a pet?

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What are you talking about? Most of you are patently not discussing popular comic "Doom Patrol", written by Grant Morrison. I am confused.

The Dirty Vicar, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's not as bad as some people I've come across on the internet. Makes some worthwhile contributions sometimes. He's not just out to irritate. But, this:

I have an uncanny knack for making people irate. Doesnt bother me. I think it's good. Passion and all that.

, posted on the Lee Mavers thread, just puts in a nutshell, the mentality of a whole breed of asshole. That's his idea of passion? I don't know where to even fucking begin. So I won't.

Nick, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That post followed by i seem to piss off alot of people here. dunno why... on the Alan McGee thread is just the classic doompatrol ethos in a nutshell.

Attack people personally under the guise of "playing devils advocate", insult other peoples taste in music left and right but get offended if anyone counters by spitting on his holy cows, and then *wonders* why people dislike him. The best bit about DP is his whole "what did I do wrong?" attitude when things go completely awry. This is ultimately probably the most frustrating thing about him, but when viewed from a distance, probably also the *funniest*.

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You lot have obviously got some negative history with the guy - for someone coming in cold he reads like he's more used to contributing to popbitch. This isn't necessarily negative, just a different approach.

I was intrigued that when I dived in for an actual fight, he wasn't up for it at all, became Mr Calm'n'reflective. And also that Kate thought I'd been ruder than she ever was to him, when I was just mildly pissed at him dissing my friend. Even though, on reflection, she's one of the most confrontational people I know (and all the better for it).

So: Within the context of enjoying this board: CLASSIC In the wider world: DUD

chris, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another thing to think abt: He's said (I don't know how many times — and remember, I *am* taking notes) that he's off.... that's it.... goodbye suckers it's been dandy.... byebye saddos...... no posts from this canadian novelist...

So what draws him back, again and again and again? He's like a 7-year-old who likes a girl in his class, doesn't know how to say this, so PUNCHES HER IN THE FACE! We should actually be flattered. *shrugs* *eyes turn up in head* *breath leaves body*

ilovethelollies, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

never mind this old tat, who is going to flowchart at kosmische tomorrow night???

gareth, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You lot have obviously got some negative history with the guy

Chris, you are coming in somewhat late, and missing most of the back story. Yes, I am a somewhat confrontational person, but I do try to back up all my confrontational bluff and bluster against the opinions expressed by people, with a fundamental respect for the people expressing said opinions.

Started on another thread, not even sure if it was the Strokes or the Poptones thread (he manages to drag McGee into every thread ever- hence, why I think your post was so damned effective, Mark) - he was being a confrontational bastard in his usual style, so I gave him some confrontation right back.

Instead of replying to my opinions and the views expressed therein- he launched back with a huge, massive, completely out of proportion blatant personal attack against me as a person, my band, my lifestyle, everything else. Clearly he had obviously gone out and RESEARCHED me, because he started bringing stuff up off personal and band webpages that I had never mentioned on this board. *THAT* bothered me.

I stopped engaging him, fearing a stalker type situation, and he escalated until it got to the point where his posts were so clearly personal and inflamatory that the Administrators of the board stepped in and deleted them.

Now he's just a stupid irritant, too much of a gnat to really bother anyone, but at the time, it really bothered me, his semi-stalker approach. Anyway, I think Mark is probably right about his whole attitude towards this board.

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to go to Flowchart! I really, really, really want to go to Flowchart! But I have to go and freaking WORK at Strange Fruit tomorrow night, at that indie twee bobbins Camera Obscura. *AND* I am missing the Dandy Warhols and Lupine Howl (OK, Lupine Howl suck big hairy moosecock, but still... must go to spit on the unbelievers who have inspired the wrath of the Prophet Jason Pierce) to see Belle and Suckasstian. Feh! Feh! Would much rather be at Flowchart.

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Be vewwy vewwy quiet! DP just popped in to say "bye" on Lee M*vers!!

And of course to point out that we are sad and bitter...

mark s, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DP's not leaving anytime soon, he just likes to give us false hopes. That guy makes me embarrassed to love Bruce Springsteen. I must insist, I've never used the word "soul" to justify anything I like or to beat someone else over the head with.

Patrick, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're right, Patrick. He's back already!!

mark s, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate, I promise I wasn't criticising.

chris, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does it bother you that he might read all this?

The Dirty Vicar, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know you weren't criticising! I was just over-explaining, as usual.

Anyway, kids, he's BAAA-AAACK!!! It really is like watching a carcrash, you just can't look away. Here's his latest random attack on someone who was actually just asking a reasonable request for more information on an artist who happened to be on Poptones.

This is better than Jerry Springer!

Except I really have to go and figure out where the Strange Fruit massive are all meeting up for Belle and Sebastian tonight.

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It bothers me that a person everyone regards as a Grade-A fuckwit is receiving so much attention & press. Save the vitriol for fucksticks & poncy (sic?) jackanapes worthy of lengthy & lugubrious scorn, what do ya say?

John Major is still PM, isn't he?

David Raposa, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's now no longer vitriol, it's turned to utter amusement. Like I said, it's like watching Jerry Springer guests make fools of themselves in public.

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. The Vicar is right: Grant Morrison is way more important than all this crap.

2. doompatrol sucks.

3. BUT I DID have a soft spot for the absurd and hyperactive neuromancer@antisocial.com, esp. when he was accused of being confrontational and changed his name to HEYBUDDY. Just thinking about that name change makes me chuckle.

the pinefox, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ho. I just made it onto the bottom of the stats. I'm on your tail, Katherine...

christopher, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah-ha, there you are! You bastard, you squeezed Paul off the stats! But you've got a LONG WAY and a LOT OF SPARE TIME to go before you'll get anywhere near me. heh.

You know, it's actually kinda fun engaging doompatrol on his own level. There's a lot to be said for acting like Beavis & Butthead on a limited scale if you get to go home and have a brain at the end of it. Poor DP, who actually has to live inside his deluded, crazed worldview.

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just don't bunt him over onto all the good threads, Kate.

I note he hasn't yet quite got it up to return to the McG**'s c*ck discussion. It wasn't what I said, exactly, or Colin: it was something *he* himself said, I think... Maybe we should just link a thread back to it whenever he gets TOO up himself?

mark s, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sigh. No more fun for now.

Anyway, I'm off to Belle and Suckasstian. Pity me. Paul has just messaged to say that he won't be making it. ARRGGHHH!!! So I am stuck going to see a band I loathe BY MYSELF, while my favourite band on earth are playing across town. Typical!

masonic boom, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You think that's harsh, I'm compering an all-day hardcore punk festival in Cambridge tomorrow.

chris, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What Masonic B says about going to B&S but loathing them, etc, is offensive. I would like to B&S and I'm not, and I feel sad about it. I'm not B&S's biggest fan, goodness knows, but I think Masonic B should stop being such an old bore about them.

the pinefox, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tough -- because I'm not fond of them either. At all! Ha! ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know, I think it's mean to have a thread about how you don't like someone. Admittedly I've never read any of his posts, but still.

I encourage Tom Ewing to delete this thread.

The Dirty Vicar, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

TE is not, in fact, allowed to delete, is he? Not being a moderator. DG is your man.

Prob here is that we are some of us, I think, a bit afraid of DoomTroll. Not afraid that he'll harm or damage us or anything like that, but that he maybe has the whatever quite to sour something we like. And we have the right (on ILE) to look into that, I think. We are actually nicer to him here — if you can believe this — than some of us have been to his, well, obviously not face, but screen- identity. Might he find his way here? Spose so. Speak Tash's name and Tash will come.

mark s, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Great, thanks Mark, now my image of him is of a big ol' bird man with four arms. Which admittedly makes some of his pronouncements all the more amusing.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom's gag, not mine. Nicole actually summoned him, I think.

Make your choice, adventurous stranger;
Strike the bell and bide the danger,
Or wonder till it drives you mad,
What would have happened if you had.

I have toyed with the idea that he doesn't exist in human form: that he's the online manifestation of the dark side of ILM's collective net geekiness, aggression, boredom, loneliness, music-obsession etc etc — bit like the loa in W.Gibson.

Except frightened of AMc's penis.

mark s, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom has no say over this board, Reverend, this is my domain. I don't think I'll delete this thread, but: how does this thread work alongside the thread about bullies? Is this bullying?
Personally, I say no. DP is *quite* capable of defending himself, and is often the one who starts trouble, so he can jolly well live with the consequences of shooting his mouth off, and picking on Kate. I personally think he's the internet equivalent of the Cenobites from Hellraiser - he's not very pleasant and has strange ideas about pleasure, namely Poptones and Alan McGee's trouser snake. Has anyone been fiddling with a funny looking puzzle box?

DG, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

lets be honest though DG, "live with the consequences", i mean, not only, are they hardly rough consequences (being talked about here), but its EXACTLY WHAT HE WOULD WANT. i mean, who else gets a thread to themselves, apart from ally and momus obviously. i think he would love this if (or, rather when) he sees it.

gareth, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, 'live with the consequences' if he should see this and be offended. To be honest, I don't think we can predict what he'd like, unless it's on Poptones.

DG, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

His at-one-point-hourly contributions to Last-5-Records included some kewl stuff, not just P*Ptones and across time and the world.

(Note totally pitiful * attempt to prevent him googling and jaunting...)

mark s, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like Belle and Sebastian because Stuart Murdoch stole my pen. However, I enjoyed the show a lot more than I thought I was going to. Partly because I was so damned drunk I would have enjoyed anything, and partly because they were actually FUNNY!!! Twee kids with a sense of humour! Waldorf and Statler impressions! Random gurls from audience singing songs while their friends did Bez impressions!

Erm... wait, this isn't about DP at all, it's about B&S now.

I think the reason that Colin started this thread was because we were already discussing DP on every other thread, and he wanted us to get back to talking about pubs, the weather and builders on the other threads, and keep our bitching here. It's clearly something that affected a lot of us, so, mean or not, it is still a meta-question perfectly valid to the forum.

Anyway... I really feel sorry for Stuart M. He has ginger eyelashes for fucks sake. And he's still a crap soundman. But he was much lovelier this time, and didn't kick us out of soundcheck or yell at us. I just wish he'd given my pen back. Sigh.

masonic boom, Sunday, 1 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ktremaineoyouwiththeflowers!

another name!!!

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's unbelievable!!! Just how instantly recognisable he is, under any bloody name! It's not even his writing style, it's the fact that he always SAYS THE SAME BLOODY THING!!! blah blah blah soul!!! blah blah blah Poptones!!! I bet he's not a real person, I bet he's a computer generated formula which just spits the same things out.

I'm scared to go back on the Twee thread, and it's MY FUCKING THREAD!!! OK, Gareth, you started it, but still.

masonic boom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The first two or three posts he tried VERY VERY hard to not be DP (as in orderly HTML: sentences: feigned interest in the opinions of others). Then he lapsed.
Twee is now chock-full of me and pinefox and alasdair talking about diminished 7ths, I'm afraid: even scarier than the big man's dick

mark s, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The giveaway for, me is the, overabundance, of, commas all in, the wrong place. Whadda card, eh? One day, someone's going to post "prml scrm, C or D" on ILM, and doompatrol hell shall, bust loose or, something.

xoxo

Norman Fay, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talking about minor 7ths, diminished 6ths and 9ths is FAR more interesting than just about anything DP has ever said in his entire life, methinks. Spacerock is all about 9ths.

masonic boom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gawd, 'e's back again. (see "eagle" thread on ILM) Take a wild guess as to who he's getting at (again...)

xoxo

Norman Fay, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as long as it stays on tossy threads about eagle and lee mavers, maybe it doesn't matter too much. containment, thats the name of the game.

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you've got a point there, Gareth... BTW, when did you join the Lollies list and why haven't you posted? ;-)

Good god, I still just can't BELIEVE that he actually read over 4000 messages on the Lollies list. I mean, I can believe that he would put together his bizarre story about me and Alan McGee from the few references there have been to Radio4 and why we didn't play it... but what amazes me if the fact that that stuff was never ON the website. He clearly had to sub up to the Lollies list (and not the news list, but the actual gossip list which requires admin approval, as well) and read through at least 2000 posts to get that stuff. (considering the McGee incident happened back in November)

I'm really not sure whether I should be flattered at his dedication, or quite frankly scared at his obssessive stalkerdom. Paul often does bizniz with Poptones- I'm very tempted to have him ask McGee is Doompatrol is just stalking him.

Good god, I'm hungover from Sussed, I've got to go back to bed.

masonic boom, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kate, i joined it about a month ago (many mentions of the lollies here and i didn't really know what it was all about, thought i'd have a look). i haven't really had a chance to look properly yet though.

could we have a brief synopsis of this mcgee episode? i, for one, am confused.

gareth, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fascinating! its happening again! its pretty much the same argument as the other guy. i think a very similar outcome is probably likely. what is interesting is that there is something about the very nature of analysis/discussion that a number of people dislike, and not just analysis/discussion, but the idea that other people might like doing it.

but at the same time, its not enough to say "thats not for me", despite the dislike of the forum, there is obviously something that keeps people who are anti-forum here. at a guess, i'm presuming that people who engage this way are primarily looking for REACTION (of any sort). it will be interesting this time to see how long it prolongs before reaction is no longer forthcoming and pastures new are required.

gareth, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth: I would like to try and calm things down, cuz NS is *not* yet as bad as doompatrol AT ALL. He has given of himself: exposed his opinions to the world; give him a fair shake. It ain't right to punish him for REMINDING us of DP. And seeing the WHOLE BOARD TURN AS ONE TO STOMP NS makes me queasy. Esp. as — adolescent tone apart, and stupid "pseudo-intellectual" stuff — I actually AGREED with his first post re OBJECTIVITY vs SUBJECTIVITY, that its abstraction was severely missing the point.

Anyway, I am attempting to broker peace on the STROKES thread. See how that goes.

mark s, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s. don't worry, i have no plans of repeating what happened last time (and have attempted all my posts to be rational and on subject)

gareth, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[DG looks at the floor and says nothing...]

DG, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S: I don't agree with you re. 'whole board stomping as one'. I don't (can't) do things as part of a whole board, just on me own, like. My first experience of the geezer (whom I have never confused with DP - clearly no connection) was being attacked by him in a very stupid and offensive manner. Since then, I have seen him attack a load of other people even more stupidly and offensively. Replies to this have been rather restrained.

I don't agree with his "arguments" either. If he wants to start saying sensible and helpful things, grate. But he has not, to my knowledge, done so yet.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox: you are right, re "as one", but I bet HE didn't see it like that. I still haven't tracked down where you earned your Gold Star? Best left buried, I spose, 'cept I am shallow gossip-maven with jones for bitchin'

mark s, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*SIGH* DP's back on ILM. The Lee Mavers thread has been strangely resurrected and then followed by a post in support of DP.

DG, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah! That's Murphy, a big music fan from Ireland and he is a Lee Mavers obsessive.

Tim Edgeworth, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, fair enough, it's just that he commited the two crimes of 1) DP style formatting, and 2) being friendly to DP. 2 especially is usually a sign of DP's presence, because no-one likes him.

DG, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It pains me to admit this, because no doubt you'll all laugh at me, but on the "Primal Scream" thread on ILM, I was actually starting to, errr, y'know, like him. A bit. Hmmmmm....

Eek. Yes. Sorry. None of the excuses I had were very good anyway, and they're all too boring to inflict on you. There were slight technical complications, but not enough to form an excuse for it taking THIS long. I'm not very good at doing people tapes: I mean, I almost always do them eventually but they always take months. Sorry. I decided that this time I would be organised and then I failed miserably. Right, consider me reminded.
