ok if you could only take 5 foods with you to a desert island, and I guess a pot or pan or two, what would these foods be? for some reason I can only think of spaghetti

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

which I know is illogical

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

but I guess it's late and I want some spaghetti

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

if I had spelled desert wrong you folks could have had some fun with it

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there stuff to burn, and can we ignore, um, fresh water? Okay, yeah, I'm gonna assume for the sake of argument that in addition to some sort of Cooking Device I have a phaser that I can set to Fire-starting and Salt-removing.

(That would so rock.)

1) Chocolate. Dark chocolate. Stronger than Samson and darker than doom.

2) Vinegar chicken, even though that's like ... several foods in one dish. But so's spaghetti, cause I'm thinking you don't mean "a bag of dry pasta, crunch crunch yum."

3) A pastrami sandwich: black and red pastrami on seeded rye, Creole mustard, caramelized onions, tabasco peppers.

4) A deep-fried Mars bar. Goddammit, I've always wanted to try one, and when's a better time then when I'm whiling away the hours waiting for the Prof to fix the Minnow?

5) A meatball sub from the North End.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm assuming you mean whole dishes as I don't actually cook:

1. papas con huevos
2. french fries
3. cheeseburgers
4. popcorn
5. hot sauce

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds pretty good to me! ok on further contemplation (and I'll play along with the "five dishes" thing because it's more fun than saying "semolina, long-grain rice etc")

spaghetti with meatballs
salade nicoise (WHY?!! I never eat this... and yet)
tortilla espanola
kamikaze rolls
lemon sorbet

(xp)

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

pork chops, vietnamese style.
juicy juicy steaks
fried chicken & waffles
tacos
toro sashimi

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

fried chicken & waffles, uhh, I'm putting that on my list too

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm allowed to because I started thread

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the thread that is

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that fried chicken and waffles is one item. I am so paddling over to that island.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I guess dinner parties are allowed, though it kind of defeats the purpose of the exercise

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bacon
Peas
Spaghetti
Spaghetti sauce
Ice cream

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ten years of college have taught me that all intellectual exercises end in either dinner parties or shouting matches.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh poor jel, didn't you hear that you can combine the spaghetti and the sauce?

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

top five off the top of the head:

blt
falafel
quesadilla
baklava
pad thai

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

good list

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that's ok, now you get to pick a new one!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man. fried chicken & waffles drenched with maple syrup thinned with chicken stock = so yummy im about to faint.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

okay! Doughnuts!

I'm so gonna die of malnutrition on this island. Does it have any fruits and berries growing on it, or is it barren?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never even had that but I want it now now now now now now, phil

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to pretend that I get sent to a different island where five specific restaurants can deliver five specific menu items, but are prohibited from rescuing me or bringing me anything else because reality television producers have taken over the planet:

1) Pepperoni and bacon pizza from Pizza Magia.
2) Pastrami Bomb (hot sub with pastrami, peppers, hot peppers, onions, mushrooms, provolone, a little mayo, a little vinegar, a little olive oil) from Zacahariah's in Hollis NH
3) Crab cakes from Joe's Crab Shack in New Orleans
4) Quesadillas from Chacho's in San Antonio
5) Earl Grey milkshake from Muddy's in Denver

Sweet JESUS, Phil!

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

a pastrami BOMB?!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

an earl grey MILKSHAKE?!!!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

tonight as I sleep all of these foods are going to be dancing in front of my eyes against a tropical island backdrop

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

to the tune of "bizarre love triangle"

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

visions of earl grey milkshakes will dance in my head

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Muddy's may not even be there anymore, but holy crap -- I was in Denver for a few weeks in 1993, and I swear the city is all about milkshakes. Every place Sarah took me they were like "Our milkshake of the day is ..." I kept repeating, "Milkshake of the DAY? What?"

So yeah, this one place had like 32 flavors of milkshakes. All the obvious flavors, and like five different coffee ones -- mocha, coffee, espresso, cappuccino (don't ask me what the differences really were), and some other one. And earl grey, which was really fantastically good.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

earl grey milkshakes, I have to repeat it to make it more real

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Filet Mignon from Gibsons
2. Broccoli with Hollandaise
3. Beefsteak tomato and onion with blue cheese
4. Bombay Sapphire martini up with olives
5. whatever the sorbet is that day

That's all I need, every day, for the rest of my life..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm assuming it wouldn't be hard to make, although I've never tried. Steep the tea, boil it down, add sugar, combine with vanilla ice cream? ... maybe ..

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man. fried chicken & waffles drenched with maple syrup thinned with chicken stock = so yummy im about to faint.

Americans are disgusting.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

okay whatever... marmite boy.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not eat Marmite. Very often. I prefer Bovril on toast. I wont explain.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, one drink - Robinson's Original Orange Squash, mixed 50-50 with water, ice cold.

The basic staples of life: crisps, chocolate and ice lollies. If I have to be specific I'll have cheese & onion crisps, Fry's Turkish Delight and lemon flavoured ice lollies.

That only leaves one slot for like a proper meal: I guess I'd go for a good meaty lasagne, low on veg, high on herbs.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 31 August 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

vegetable sushi, palak paneer, lentil burgers, soy smoothies, chips(with dip)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 31 August 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

1) my fave pizza: very thin-crust base cooked with passata and garlic, taken out of the oven and covered with tons of cold parma ham, rocket, basil, shaved parmesan and loads of good olive oil
2) jerk chicken from the noisy bastards who keep setting a barbecue up outside my bedroom window every weekend from midnight till about 5 in the morning. i would want to kill them if it weren't for the fact that their food is absolutely incredible.
3) chicken satay with about half a gallon of peanut sauce, chopped onion and cucumber salad
4) good old traditional british roast beef, yorkhire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and horseradish sauce.
5) Apple pie or crumble, either is good provided the apples are still tart and there's loads of cinnamon in it with extra-thick cream...

i am starving now!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Sunday, 31 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Slumber party at Dave's house!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 31 August 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok:

1.  Turkey dinners from Earl Abel's.
2.  Freschetta pizza with a sauce-stuffed crust (either the Grilled Vegetable Medley or the Supreme). (p.s.: I'll make my own oven if I have to.)
3.  Trail mix from the bulk bins at Sun Harvest.
4.  Lots & lots of yummy watermelon.
5.  Lots & lots of yummy Diet Cherry Coke.

And I want a neverending supply of sunblock. There will be hell to pay if I come out of this looking dark. Tans may be good for the finer-featured, but it'd just make me look even more like a cinematic "mad as hell" Native American.

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 31 August 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Olive Oil
2. A crate of two of wine
3. A crate of shallots
4. A crate of Garlic
5. A crate of chocolate.

I could cook what I fish for in the olive oil, shallots and garlic and have the chocolate for dessert.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 31 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 1 September 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)
