2nd poetry qn., should i use the image of [a] cats milling around the kitchen like hungry junkies, [b] vice versa, [c] neither because poems about cats & junkies are both some enough-already shit

duane, Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ok i've already answered that one but answer the 1st still ok?

duane, Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

but you write about what you know & my friends tend to be either [a] junkies or [b] cats

duane, Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You should write poetry how you post here.

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

hang on a tic, i'm getting a facial tic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it still a homonym when it's spelt exactly the same? Sorry if that seems a stupid question :/

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i reckon it must be, if the meaning is different. however i am not a language-studying-guy

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was, thats why I felt it a stupid question - I should know better! Heh.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

that one's OK I suppose because I like it.

dengo matherton (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

cuz if my heat stops workin/then my heat starts workin

dengo matherton (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, so it's not really a rhyme

dengo matherton (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

but he uses the "double meaning" thing all the time

dengo matherton (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"and she wants me to sneak in the back like the trojans of troy/best believe there's trojans involved"

dengo matherton (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a half-rhyme right? or an off-rhyme? my english lit degree is wearing off very quickly

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

it'll help readers get into character if it's that kind of alternation and they normally pronounce their r's, so it must be good.

Rhyming with a homonym is as legitimate as any other rhetorical device, but because it is such a jarring choice on the part of the poet (or lyricist) it rarely works except as an element of humor. Humor is often jarring.

Aimless, Monday, 1 September 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Too legit to quit,
Near claasic but not quite,
Respect the lines I write,
'Cause homonym rhymes are right.

mei (mei), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

you've worked at this plant so long, you're a plant

webber (webber), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It works in a rhyme,
It works in a cant,
It works if U flow,
But not if U can't!

mei (mei), Monday, 1 September 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just clear something up? Caught and court are homophones, not homonyms. e.g. new and knew. Homonyms are when the two words are spelt exactly the same but have diff meanings, e.g. train (locomotive) and train (practise, etc).

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 1 September 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Another couple of illustrations: Webber's example is a homonym. Flu and flew are homophones.

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 1 September 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(I know cant and can't aren't homo-anythings BTW)

mei (mei), Monday, 1 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

you need the homonym rhyming with an internal rhyme aswell, fucking classic.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo! What up? Checkit:

You can't buy my lines in a can, an',
My beats they beat the Can-Can, man,
For tha picture don't travel to Cannes,
Can Y'all already crown the man who can?

duane, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I do this in the chorus of one of my band's songs..."we're reaching maximum capacity/the capacity for change lives in you and me"...so, uh, if I do it, it's prob'ly total dud, right? Right then.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)
