C or D: Denim Jackets

I bought one at a Gabriel Brothers (think Ross Dress For Less, all irregular/overstock shit at discount prices, like, the wife got a "Limited" suit there for $30 (saw it at the Limited for $140)) because I think it will help me Complete The Look for the TRBNGR show on the 12th. It was $12. But can I wear it besides just that occasion?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

No. A million times no.

The only thing worse than denim jackets are jackets with that off-white puffy "sherpa" material for lining.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you know I was pretty anti-denim jacket for a long time then I weakened and bought an overdyed blue one and I never looked back.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

what about denim jackets cut like blazers? i don't have one but a woman i admire does.

youn, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what about denim jackets with their arms cut off? or white ones, arms also cut off, worn over leather biker jackets? and they have "CONFLICT" written on the back in black marker?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what about those?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like white denim.

youn, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if they also have a Motorhead patch sewn on.

Denim jackets are a half-step above trucker hats.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

out on the road today, I saw a Metallica back patch on a jean jacket
a little voice inside my head said 'don't look back, you can never look back'

hstencil, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. For the last six years, a denim jacket was the only kind that made sense for me: it breathes, it's not ruined by rain, it'll get you through reasonable levels of cold (the kind you get in New Orleans, in other words; having moved, I'll have to go back to leather), it's lightweight enough that you can carry it around in preparation for putting it on when the sun goes down without much difficulty. It did everything I needed a jacket to do, in other words, and nothing I didn't.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic- who are you people that say dud?

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

they look good on girls. clare honeytoastcoffee was wearing one when i met her, it looked ace.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

We are the people who don't look like Bruce Springsteen groupies.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

step off, milo.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I resent that!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Step 1 - denim jacket
Step 2 - trucker hat
Step 3 - fashion mullet

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that's ridiculous

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the last time I associated denim jackets with Springsteen, the Red Sox were in the World Series. So I'm gonna take milo's point as a firm statement that the Sox'll do it again this year.

Thanks, milo!

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

do what again? Blow it in Game Six?

hstencil, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn you, stence! But hell, I'd settle for that if we at least got to Game Six.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing I like most about it is that it is a Large (I'm 6'4" and 260 lbs, so most other clothes I buy are XXL) and it contrasts so heavily with the one I bought in highschool, like 1997, that hung down to my knees like a mid-length trenchcoat and hid baseball bats and shit.

Speaking of trucker hats, they are just now getting popular in Steubenville Ohio, wear I am from but haven't lived in for the last 5 years.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, especially on women with contrasting-shade blue jeans (ie new jeans old jacket or the reverse).

Not quite so classic on male commuters over a shirt and tie, but full marks to them for daring to look even 'acceptably' un-airbrushed.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Tep. My team hasn't been to the World Series since the 50s.

hstencil, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

jean jacket and a tie, feel like such a lie.

hstencil, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, okay. I'm not sure if that's better or worse, but I can at least sympathize and commiserate.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely classic, a wardrobe essential. I see no parallel whatsoever with trucker caps.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Bought one in DC at Diesel for 39.99, regular price $179 or something crazy. IT RULES. Honestly the favorite piece of clothing I've procured in a long long time.

Aaron A., Monday, 1 September 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that after the TRBNGR show I'm gonna sew a pair of jeans that don't fit me to te back of the jacket, like a cape. That'll be funny as shit. You know, like a pantscape.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If you'd asked me what a pantscape was, that isn't what I would've told you ..

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I love denim jackets, but it's not like I'm Kay Thompson in Funny Face or anything so my opinion on such matters is not worth much.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Panstcape obv. the porn counterpart of Dreamscape

Aaron A., Monday, 1 September 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

or the pants counterpart

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pretty much thinking that, or half of a handjob euphemism -> "painting the pantscape," like landscape only ... pants.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You're all right. Pantscape is an awesome word and should be used as often as possible. On that note, Im going to go throw up all of the Liquers that I guzzled out of the liquor cabinet because I ran out of beer and spirits.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe the love denim jackets are getting from ILX!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

We can't all cling to the "clean sheets" aesthetic, you know.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid I don't even know what that refers to.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

denim jackets are great i have one that i've owned for about 15 years, it's starting to come apart but is so soft and comfortable and looks pretty good where it's starting to wear through. an absolutely essential piece of clothing but you HAVE to avoid wearing them with any other kind of denim - never, ever, ever go for the full denim ensemble it looks bollocks...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

denim jackets are classic.

dave the full denim works fine if the jeans are a different colour and shape. ie a tight denim jacket with baggy jeans.

the same colour looks ridiculous, like a delboy type character.

i have had the same one for 3 or 4 years, it's psycho cowboy and was too expensive when i got it but it feels good value now.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i suppose so best to avoid the FDE, tho, as a general rule. i tend to wear my very faded denim jacket with black trousers and it looks great

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

also buttoning up denim jackets is wrong

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

good buttoned not at the top, but one button lower, the rest undone. also if worn as underjacket with a t-shirt, buttoning is ok...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

haha dave I was wondering if you'd go for the top down thing, I don't mind one or two buttons done near the bottom, but maybe I'm bitter cos the buttons are gone from mine except the top 3.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sorry but denim jackets on guys are WRONG. if you're a guy in a denim jacket, you just look like a datsuns fan.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the way to do it is to button ONLY the top button. Not mad keen on them but if you need to wear one this is the way to go. and the all denim head to toe can look good on the right guy but only if its all the same shade of Denim...

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

mentalists. there are denim jackets and there are denim jackets, like there are jeans and jeans, one need not look like a datsuns fan

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

single-shaded full denim ensembles are totally and completely shite...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

they're even worse with denim shirts, haha, and a gold chain!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave are you trying to say that different colours of denim in one outfit are acceptable? because if so you are very wrong!

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Monday, 1 September 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't especially like denim with denim at all but the FDE is bloody aful in so many way especially the boxfresh-evisu-jeans-and-matching-jacket look. just totally wank and v tacky...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

well i actually think that denim jackets are SHITE.

Except that i have a denim Blazer which is pretty cool but that doesnt really count.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

different colours of denim are entirely acceptable, provided the style of jacket and jeans are also different, as i said above.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Never had one, wasn't tempted, I'm sure others can wear it well. Why the hell am I awake?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

certain types of denim are less strongly denim than others, ie the traditional blue jeans and a black denim jacket would look thick, but as I said a tight fitting blue denim jacket and darker blue baggy jeans is quite a common thing around, when they're different styles the two denims don't have to clash

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I love the one my boyfriend has: a VERY dark denim jacket. A tight fit. It's lovely. I also have a grey/faded denim jacket which looks great with a khaki skirt.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i just bought a navy/dark blue denim jacket - bit late perhaps but i want to rock the Jason Donovan '89 look this Autumn fo shizkins

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

or i might buy some leather trousers for the full 'reverse-Lovejoy' effect

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

reverse lovejoy effect!!! hahahahaha! i am going for the reverse rosemary and thyme look myself...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i am the Anti-McShane! bow down!

also, if the denim is navy its okay to wear with navy jeans i says

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

mcshane had a mullet... you must also have a mohawk and have no sex as he was always one for the ladies... i dress more like eric than lovejoy...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No no no, go with ribbed (?!?) trousers.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

for your pleasure?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave as long as you don't dress like Tink (leave that to Andre from Outkast)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Ronan that you can match different colors or cuts of denim. Also, while the full denim suit effect is usually dud, wearing a faded and tight denim jacket with similar pants can work if you're going for a trashy rocker look. Not everyone can pull this off, however.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

what pants with a denim jacket then?

jonas lefrel (jonas lefrel), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Long jacket. No pants. Classssic.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

All denim is disgusting. Yes, even those reallyreally expensive jeans you bought.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Short skirt, looooooooong jacket.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How about denim jackets cut like blazers?

mampy, Monday, 1 September 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont think they really count.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
Did anyone ever try this "pantscape" idea out?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Denim jackets CLASSIC!

Got my vintage stonewash jean jacket a few months ago for $3, with a lighter in the one breast pocket and a bunch of 1995 oil change slips in the other. We are never parted.

Canadian tuxedo: jeans pants, jeans shirt, and JEAN JACKET.

sucka (sucka), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

jean with jean? dude... Noooooo

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My brother gave me a Levi's denim jacket for Christmas, it's even called a 'trucker' something-or-other.

Still firmly in the 'dud' column for guys.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never owned a denim jacket.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

dud.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)
