(the "did you have a good summer?" and "do you agree with Fritz that September is secretly the finest of months?" thread)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like shit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Summer cannot be over, no. Not until I say so (this usually means a grudging acknowledgment in mid-November).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sad that the summer appears to have gone. I do like Autumn, but I was really enjoying the sunshine. Overall a good summer, definitely.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Ned, summer need not be over - even in mid-November coz that's about when it starts here. If you return you will be in summer-land again.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 1 September 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

November can be quite a good month. We often seem to have prolonged periods of clear blue skies, and this coupled with the briskness in the air often puts me in good spirits. Right now, however, I still feel like fucking shit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

kind of.

Work/Career-Mainly crap, good for money, possibly overdid it and wussed out of living in another country for the year. Careerwise, yes I am now published and on the brink of getting regular work, parents happy etc.

Social life-Brilliant at the beginning in terms of nights out drinking, new friends, cementing old friendships, hedonism. Tapered off a bit recently with alot of people moving away. Very little rave in club settings cos my favourite place shutdown in May. Glastonbury/Tribal Gathering/Witnness all pretty great fun, lots of random sporadic nights out in friends houses followed by walking around local nature spots beering etc. All newish experiences.

Love-More action than usual but less reaction. Mentalist new situation recently developed.

Money-More than ever.

Hair-like a raft of lemons

Happiness-mars is floating around a stubborn jupiter, your friends say take risks, dont listen, nail boards to your doors and remain in log cabins.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Toraneko: :-) And I am planning on returning, but not this year -- the goal is a month long vacation in/around January 2005, two weeks in Australia and two in NZ.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Blinding sunshine, but very cold so you have to wear your scarf, that's what i am looking forward to. Oh & wearing my snuggly parka again!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it was all work and very little else. shit.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

wardrobe change is the only reason to like a change of seasons. I love hot weather.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a lot of work to do. Not enough of it got done. I was less broke than I usually am in the summer, and less hot. I saw more movies in the theater than usual at the beginning of the summer. I managed to make my kitchen usable, although it's still a terrible kitchen. Diet Pepsi Vanilla came out.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I have always had that 'new beginnings' start of term feel round Sept/Oct. I'm far more likely to do 'spring' cleaning and the like now than in March. And this year I have an ACTUAL new beginning and an ACTUAL start of term, ie. the first year of my masters. Woo!

But I want a few more warm evenings too.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nice to be able to stop sweating so much.

chicken tonight (chicken tonight), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Best UK summer ever?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a great Summer, over now though. That bonfire smell/crisp air/pale sunlight combo still triggers a 'back to school' response in me, 26 years on from the first time. Got it earlier than ever this year (on Saturday).

Tom (Groke), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

In retrospect, though, I think I enjoyed last winter more.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My memory's shot to shit so it could have been wonderful or awful and I wouldn't know.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh Bonfire Night to look forward to!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the back to school feeling now maybe because it's such a perfectly preserved feeling ... when it hits me full on it feels like I am 10 yrs old again for a few seconds.

and I like September because it does feel like the beginning of a new year much more than January. September is wide open whereas January is just a long hard slog.

mark s (mark s), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a bad Summer for me, but marred by lack of festival attendance (specifically Glastonbury), end of relationship (but probly for the best), lack of work/much money and ILX addiction ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

A really great summer. I like all change of season times though I always feel expectant (and the oppertunties for new clothing). I enjoy summer, but it will be nice not to have to go out slathered in sun screen/ always be looking for shade.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just staring Moominvalley in Midsummer after the trial of faith that was The Exploits of Moominpappa.

Not a great summer really.

Yes, September is a great month. First month of the year in the jel-calender.

Don't let the autumn pass you by.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a pretty good summer, despite losing my job. I got to go on tour, and I missed most of the super-hot days in NYC. I still got to go to the beach and go to barbecues as well.

hstencil, Monday, 1 September 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

second worst summer ever. (first was last summer.)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

pray tell why, gabbo?

hstencil, Monday, 1 September 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I did a lot of waiting.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 1 September 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i should edit that to say "second worst summer ever, personally." although from a cultural/historical/political angle my country was really doing it's best to make it true across the board.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad in several ways: the heat was sometimes unbearable; the stupid divorce settlement is still not finalised; I am still single, and have been for over six months now; I have been a bit strapped for cash at times, though admittedly hardly poverty-stricken.

Still, work was very successful, and ILE and its associated social life has meant a lot to me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Tele Addicts because it always started in Autumn and was always on on Monday nights and thus meant that a; school had begun again for another year and also b; you still had four days to go till the weekend.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It passed me by. I don't mind, though.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the best of times. It was the blurst of times.

Furious George (Oops), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It was summer? Whoa.. Seems like all I did was work, and since I'm in a/c all day, I have no idea what the weather is like outside.

I need a new life.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm at work. my feet are cold, because it's too air-conditioned in here and i got caught in the downpour outside.

a pretty apt end to this summer, which got washed away by rain and a stupid schedule.

my trip to montana was nice though.

maura (maura), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

summer ain't over yet. still got 20 more days, officially. Now to see all them leaves turn red.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit like Tom, I went out on Saturday and the air tasted like Autumn. I liked that.

The problem with living in a relatively cold country is that there's never enough summer to go round. And I felt like I didn't do anything much, e.g. didn't go on a proper holiday whereas I went on 2 last year.

Still, fairly fun as usual. I've noticed over the past couple of summers that I don't stay up to see sunrises as often. Perhaps this is because it takes me less time to get home. Or there are no 5am basketball matches on Channel 4 anymore.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to love the back to school feeling Fritz means. Until I actually had to start going back to school. :(

september, worst month ever.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No more kids cluttering up the pool. I love the back to school feeling (and hate fun).

Matt (Matt), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember summer. It was really hot and doing a Tae-Bo class in an un-airconditioned room packed with people was completely MAD and exciting and fun. Soon it will be summer again and I will get to SWEAT and then run out into what will feel like a cool breeze even though only hours earlier if felt kind of muggy and hot.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it about to be summer for you, Toraneko?

ModJ, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Summer kind of passed me by, probably because I was waiting around for September to arrive. Last winter crawled by. It seemed to never end.

Mandee, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

2003: The Summer That The Spirits Helped Nick to Forget

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Anna here, I love the changing of the seasons just for that feeling of expectation. I'm sure this is a hangover from the days of proper term structures and the like.

Of course - Autumn 2003 is when the US ILX contingent hits London (well some of you at any rate). I'm sure I'm not alone in really looking forward to this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel so sorry for the people going back to school, what a horrible nightmare.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I hardly notice that tis end of Summer: technically, Summer sunshine never ends down here (though sometimes, I wish it would). The heat, humidity and bugs are still round.
