Gravy

My mum's aunt (she is only seven years older than my mum) and her husband came down to stay with us a couple of weeks ago from Sheffield, and it seemed like all they could talk about was gravy.

Aunt; "This gravy's nice. Is it with drippin'?"
Mum; (so excited as to be almost delirious) "NO!"
Aunt; *eyes aghast*
Mum; "It's out of a packet!"
Aunt; (amazed and incredulous) "Reeeeeeeeeally?"

Continue ad nauseum.

Gravy is now a pet hate almost as much as Ornaments. even though I love gravy.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

send cookies.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Instant gravy is horrible - I can't understand why people buy it. Maybe they're scared of making proper gravy in case it goes all lumpy or something.

C J (C J), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot agree with you Nick, though I did wholeheartedly about Ornaments. Gravy is very important.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, I can understand your dislike for pedestrian conversations where people get excited over banal subject matter, but that's no reason to start hatin' on gravy. Gravy is yum!

robster (robster), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Onion gravy

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Gravy is SEMIOTICALLY important.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Gravy is great, y00 h4t4!

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Gravy is all important. Packet gravy is the antichrist.

Ed (dali), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

gravy is the best thing in the world - particularly on chips...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm reminded of a Peter Kaye sketch...

Kaye (in chipshop); "Chips n gravy, please."
Chippy; "Got chips. Got no gravy."
Kaye; "Chips n curry sauce then."
Chippy; "Got chips, got no curry sauce."
Kaye; "Chips n mushy peas then, please."
Chippy; "Got chips. Got no mushy peas."
Kaye; "'Ave you got owt moist?!"

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Gravy is important def. james says he is the master of making gravy & that our children will hate my gravy as it doesnt have any meat juices in it. hmph!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, & suede water makes the best gravy!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

MMmm. I visited my grandmother this weekend and ate biscuits with sawmill gravy for breakfast every morning. graavvvyyy..

Dale the Titled (cprek), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My granny has a similar obsession with potatoes, where did you buy these, how much were they, what type are they, are they better than the queens or the kerrs pinks or some other fucking weird name, i like a floury potato, i like a wet potato, give me a potato.

It makes discussion at dinner impossible. It's a fucking potato, hardly the highlight of any meal.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course it is, potatoes rock!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "ornaments"

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ornamental gravy? You could pour some gravy into a pretty gravy boat & place it on the mantel piece! I'm sure Nick would love it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Gravy can go on anything y'know.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i am more of a riceboy

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my favorite of my dad's weekend breakfast treats growing up was when he made brown rice and fried eggs and covered it in thick sausage gravy mrgmmmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaah...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot stand chips & gravy.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i like it but only of they dont pour on three litres of gravy, you need moderation. also its a drunk food like chips and garlic sauce or chips with cheese and garlic sauce, that nearly ruined my glastonbury, and I had it the night before I left.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

garlic sauce & chips? madness!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

is that only an irish thing, like garlic mayonnaise, i think the main plus is the mayo is cold and the chips are hot.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Garlic mayo is yummy & i think you are right about cold mayo & hot chips! So are you saying garlic sauce is the same as garlic mayo?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yes sorry "garlic sauce" is what it is called in my local chipper and so they have corrupted my vocab

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i see, then my humblest apols ronan! garlic mayo is indeed scrummy with chips.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

we in london called it aioli

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

some of them in London do

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't aware that your part of london would know it as aioli dave!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

You do, Tim, I've heard you. Aioli jus.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

btw i realise i deserve to be punched for that... however aioli is a total winner with chips, like a slightly looser mayo, preferably mad at home with garlic, but i actlly like making it with smoked or roasted garlic as it's a lot softer taste and almost sweet rather than the metallic taste you can get from dud supermarket garlic at times...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

roast garlic is the best, so you are forgiven! :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't aware that your part of london would know it as aioli dave!

aaaiiiii-oli, y'knaah!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah I get it now!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I love aoli. With anything. I like making it with roasted chipolte and putting in on sammiches.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds bloody amazing!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all gravy.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)
